Pentecost Sunday 28 May 2023

The Gospel (John 20: 20 - 22)

Jesus entered, stood among them, and said, “Peace be with you”. Then he showed them his hands and side. The disciples, seeing the Master with their own eyes, were exuberant. Jesus repeated his greeting, “Peace to you”. Then he took a deep breath and breathed on them. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” he said.

... On the way to Mass

Listen for the words Jesus says in today’s Gospel: “Peace be with you”. Where else in the Mass do we hear these words? Why do we say them?

On the way home from Mass

What do you think the disciples felt before Jesus came and stood in their midst? After he breathed on them, how do you think they felt?

The Prayer

Through the Spirit of God, all things live and have their being. We receive the Spirit and live in God’s way. Jesus breathes the Spirit upon us and we are forgiven and forgiving. We receive the Spirit and live in God’s way. The Holy Spirit is with us always, the presence of God in our world. We receive the Spirit and live in God’s way.

The Question of the Week

Staff/Parents

What important work does Jesus ask of you at this time in your life?

Primary Students

How would Jesus want you to treat your friends and family this week?

The Action

The gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit are defined by lists of words that primary school children memorise, but behind the words are powerful realities. Invoking the Spirit of joy, peace, patience, and love will create quite a different world than the one invoked by anger, bitterness, and indifference. Lives are bound together or drawn apart by words spoken or withheld. Choose one fruit of the Holy Spirit that is least present in your life, and make conscious decisions to employ it this week.

The Greek word Pentecost means 7 and it took place 7 weeks after the Jewish Passover.

Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after the resurrection.

Pentecost is connected to Christianity's central image of God as Trinity. Christians have come to understand God in three ways. First, as God the Creator in nature, second, as the Son, in the story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and finally, as Spirit. The Spirit represents God as living and active in the world today.

We are gifted with the Holy Spirit, too, in this world, and we have “great expectations” for what that Spirit will accomplish in our lives.
