Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 3 Newsletter - Friday 16 May 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Healthy Harold Visits Drummoyne PS! 🦒

This week, our K-4 students had the opportunity to take part in the much-loved Life Education program, delivered from the iconic Healthy Harold van! Each class explored age-appropriate lessons focused on health, safety and wellbeing. From learning about the importance of nutrition and making healthy choices, to understanding friendships, feelings and how to stay safe, students were thoroughly engaged in the interactive sessions. Harold, of course, made a special appearance - much to the delight of our younger learners! A big thank you to Ms Gaby Walsh for her excellent organisation of the program.

Keeping Our School Community Healthy

As we head into the colder months, we’re starting to see an increase in colds, flu and other seasonal illnesses. To help minimise the spread of sickness among students and staff, we kindly ask that families keep children at home if they are showing cold or flu-like symptoms. We understand that sometimes children may be symptomatic without being contagious. In these cases, we may request a medical certificate confirming that your child is fit to return to school.

Earlier this week, the school provided flu vaccinations for staff to help protect our teachers and maintain continuity of learning for our students. Thank you for your ongoing support in keeping our school community safe and well.

Uniform Reminder – Cold Weather ❄️

On the topic of cooler weather, we’ve noticed students beginning to layer up and we’d like to thank families for supporting our uniform expectations. It’s been great to see a noticeable uplift in our uniform standards since the introduction of the new guidelines.

A few quick reminders as we head into the colder months:

  • When wearing tights, stockings or trousers, navy socks are expected to maintain a consistent and neat appearance.

  • Only school jackets should be worn at school. Non-uniform outerwear should be left at home. We’re currently working with the P&C to introduce new school jumpers/sweaters as an additional cold weather option. We look forward to sharing more details soon.

Thanks for helping us keep our students looking smart and feeling proud in their school uniform!

You're Invited – Kindergarten Reading Session and May P&C Meeting

We warmly invite all parents to join us next Tuesday evening, 20th May,  for two important events:

  • 📚 Kindergarten Reading Information Session @ 7pm: Join us before the P&C meeting for a session tailored to Kindergarten parents. During the session, Ms Gaby Walsh will be sharing some helpful strategies to support your child’s reading at home.

  • 🗓️ P&C Meeting @ 7:30pm – All Welcome: Following the session, we’ll hold our regular P&C meeting. I use this time to share more detailed updates about planned school events, programs and initiatives, and it’s also a valuable opportunity to hear feedback from our parent community. Be assured; however, it’s not just about me! The P&C discuss, organise and plan a wide range of initiatives to make our school even better for our students and families. Everyone is welcome and we always love to see some new people come along - it’s a great way to stay informed, get to know other parents and contribute to the school community in a really meaningful way.

Regards,

Do you know a family with a child starting school in 2026?

Please help us spread the word about our upcoming Kindergarten 2026 Open Morning (Thursday 22/5 @ 9:30am) by sharing the details with friends, neighbours or local families who might be considering schools.

We’re always looking to grow our amazing Drummoyne PS community and word of mouth from our current families makes a big difference.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Peer Support

This week in Peer Support, children discussed skills and how to communicate their feelings and needs to others. They talked about the skills they use when participating in a variety of activities. When children understand they already have many of the skills needed to succeed, they can feel more confident when trying something new.

Students are asked to identify events which trigger different feelings. Please encourage your child to remember the skills they have used in one activity when trying something new. Also encourage your child to communicate their feelings and needs.

PBL AWARDS

Positive Behaviours for Leaning (PBL) Tokens

Tokens are handed out to students who demonstrate our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. Students post the tokens in the collection tubes divided by house teams. The tokens are counted at the end of each week, and the ongoing totals are displayed on our school notice board outside the office.

PSSA News

Congratulations to David G who participated this week in the NSW State Basketball Championships. David's SE PSSA team placed 5th overall, which was a fantastic achievement in a highly competitive field. David represented Sydney East with distinction, demonstrating outstanding commitment, courage, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. His respectful attitude both on and off the court was a credit to the DPS school values.

Good luck to Diego S and David G who are off to IWPSSA Softball trials next Tuesday.

Assembly Stars

Calling all DPS students from K-6! We are looking for talented performers to open our assemblies and showcase their skills. Whether you play the piano, recite poetry, or sing up a storm, we would love you to audition to become one of our Assembly Stars and start our assemblies with a showstopping number. You can perform solo or collaborate with a small group of two or three others to highlight your talents.

If you’re interested in auditioning, please fill in the School Bytes form sent on 15 May.  Auditions will take place on Wednesday morning, 21 May, before school from 8:30 am. Be sure to sign up and bring any instruments or props you need. You are also welcome to use the DPS piano. Please note that students will be performing in school uniform, so there’s no need to dress up.

Even if your idea isn’t quite perfected yet, don’t hesitate to register. We’re excited to see your creativity and enthusiasm! (Photo of Ayden A playing the piano at the 2024 assembly).

Violin Discovery Session

Thank you to the parents who expressed interest in their child learning the violin this year. Our goal at DPS is to build a vibrant string ensemble, with the opportunity to perform at the Festival of Instrumental Music at the Opera House. We aim to make this an ongoing tradition, with our string ensemble participating annually.

We were thrilled by the enthusiasm shown by both parents and students. If you were unable to attend the session but would like more information, please feel free to email Ms Sole - suzanne.sole@det.nsw.edu.au

    OFFICE NEWS

Important information if your child travels to school by bus?

From 24 February to 21 March 2025 Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services. It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important? The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
