Principal's Report

Tuesday 18th July 2023

Hello Everyone,

Today our students participated in a Japanese puppetry incursion. It was entertaining and informative, and the children were a great audience. This term, the whole school focus is on the Arts, and incursions are a great way to introduce the children to a wide range of experiences, without the exorbitant cost to take a bus into Melbourne regularly. We have another couple of incursions planned for later this term.

Yesterday, the 2023 NAPLAN results were published to principals. These results will be sent home to individual families shortly. This year, an entirely new marking and ranking system has been introduced which means that we cannot compare our school results with previous results. This will be the same for parents who have children who have done the NAPLAN testing in the past – you will not be able to compare your children’s results. A letter will be sent home with your child’s NAPLAN results to explain this.

Given that it is a new system, it appears to me that our students have done exceptionally well, with many assessed as “Exceeding” required expectations. I will need to wait for our comparisons with other “similar schools” (schools with a similar socio-economic profile and size) to be able to clearly understand our results. This may take a while to come though, but I will keep you all informed. I went to all of our NAPLAN students yesterday and congratulated them on their commitment and hard work – they are fantastic!!!

Our solar panels are now up and running. They were connected into the grid yesterday and what fantastic weather we had to start off.

I’d like to congratulate Moser Pretorius who represented the school at the State Cross Country last week, in Glen Iris. It is rare that we get a student through to this high level of competition and we are all proud of his achievement. He came 16th overall in his age group.  I was telling the assembly on Friday, that there are almost 380,000 primary school students in our state and so Moser’s achievement to be in the top 20 students in his competition is amazing.

Another congratulations to Xanthe Berger and Wil Jacobson who have been given roles in the upcoming Mount Players production of Peter Pan. I believe that two of our past grade 6 students, Amelie Berger and Molly Hindson also have roles, with Amelie having the lead as Peter Pan. It’s wonderful to see our students so successful in pursuing their dreams.

Production preparations have begun in the school – no doubt many of you are hearing about the different birds and songs that are already being practised. Auditions have been held for the senior students and roles will be announced shortly. There may be some disappointment if your child doesn’t get the part they wanted, but we will support them to understand this.

I am currently working on an Inclusive Schools grant application to further develop our playground areas and to add a sensory loop to the school (an area that provides a range of sensory experiences such as sound, smell, touch). This is a large task, involving quite a lot of work, and I am grateful for the support of Olivia, our wellbeing coordinator, and Amy, our Business Manager. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we are successful – but it is only a limited bucket of money, so fingers crossed.

I am also looking at applying for a grant to support our OSHC program, as we are currently not covering costs for this. One idea is that I add in a vacation program to be run from the school. I would be really interested to hear from any parents who think that they would access a program such as this – whole day activities, five days per week of the holidays – even part time.

Enjoy this slightly warmer winter weather, and have a great week.

Trish

From the Office

Hello everyone,

Smile Squad update:

For those students who were unable to be seen whilst the Smile Squad attended our school late term 2, there will be a letter from the Smile Squad sent out to parents detailing the next steps. Please look out for this in the coming weeks.

Just a quick reminder this week that Absences are to be reported via the school phone absence line, or through the school office.

Our annual school production will be held in term 3. Audition scripts have been given to our grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 students. The production is usually performed at the end of the term, so if you are away on holidays at that time, or a large portion of the term, please let us know so that we can work the students roles around this. We will be sending more information home about production soon, and please watch this space for production news throughout the term.

Thank you

Building Resilience: Nurturing Strong and Confident Students

This term we are continuing to expand our understanding of how to best nurture confident, resilient students. To support families, here are some resilience focused conversation starters which can help facilitate open and honest discussions at home.

Embrace a Growth Mindset: What made your brain grow today?

Encourage Problem-Solving Skills: What challenge or problem did you work on today?

Promote Emotional Regulation: What is your favourite way to feel calm?

Cultivate Perseverance: What are some responsibilities you have right now?

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2nd article this term.

We have a special on Rufus seeing as he obviously is being missed.

After Rufus moved to Alice Springs he got his coat cut a little shorter to help him deal with the heat when he first moved up .

The heat hasn't seemed to bother him at all, although he is not out in the middle of the day much. His coat has grown longer since being cut and this has helped him keep warm during the cold desert nights. He loves the weather there as it's dry, which has helped his arthritis.

Does he like the new kids and school?

He loves the kids and the school there, he lives on campus and has all the boarding school kids to hang out with any time of the day.

He also goes to class with Mr Dohler's wife, and will sleep under the desk at the front of the class room after visiting all the kids for a pat.

At lunch he can be found roaming the yard for lunch leftovers just like he did at MMPS.

What are his favourite activities?

Chasing the balls still remains at the top of his list, eating and sleeping are still a close second and third favourite past time. He still enjoys hanging out with the family, going for walks and camping.

Is he still eating Leaves?

Not sure, did he really used to do that at MMPS? Although he can still be found chewing on sticks, especially when he can't find a ball.

Have a good week everyone,

Harriet

Digital Technology at MMPS

So, what do you get when you add an iPad, a bunch of LEGO from the late 80's Mrs Hyland has been collecting and a Grade Prep / 1 student's imagination? - Well that would be the epic movies below.

Enjoy the beeps, boops, and action (and apologies for the loud guy that makes a few cameo appearances in the background...)

Japanese Incursion

Showko dazzled us on Tuesday 18th with her Japanese incursion. She introduced the children to a 400 year old Japanese traditional theatre called rakugo which developed during a prolonged time of peace in Japan where single performers  sat on a cushion in a designated space, utilising only a fan and a cloth to assist with creative stories. This was a time when people were more in tune with their imaginations.

Using only her Magic bamboo sheet, she created shapes like the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and more.

She performed an hilarious puppet show starring Ninja Ken, and then went on to use other puppets in a Monster theatre.

Showko is a talented ventriloquist and performer. The children (and staff) thoroughly enjoyed her show. Below are some great photos of the show and some accounts from the students.

MMPS School Production 2023

On Friday, the whole school was introduced to the musical score for the upcoming "Winding Jamboree" to be performed at the end of term. The school was a buzz with music and singing in the air as our students began to practise their songs. It is always an exciting time at school, where the students get a chance to become involved in the creative arts, from making props and costumes in art to singing, dancing and acting performances. It is always so much fun, and the students really enjoy every part of the production process.  We look forward to providing more updates this term as to how the performance practises are coming along in anticipation for this much loved and favourite school event.

Young Voices of Macedon

Young Voices of Macedon is currently preparing for their annual concert in September. Our older singers (9+) are also commencing work on Sea dreaming by Elena Kats-Chernin, a substantial work that was first performed by a massed choir of children at the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. In 2 performances in Bendigo on 25th and 26th November our choir will join with the Bendigo Youth Choir and choirs from Girton College, along with the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra in what promises to be an exciting and memorable experience.
