Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 3 Newsletter - Friday 4 August 2023

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

2023 Education Week

This week we have opened our doors to parents, grandparents and friends to show you the impact of public education on the lives of your children and grandchildren and how the children are embracing the opportunities that Drummoyne Public School offers.

At Drummoyne we see the best in public education and this week we have celebrated the achievements of our students and our teachers.

Thank you for your support of the school, for the sacrifices you make and your time this week to join us, knowing that your involvement helps to build a brighter future for your children.

Children's Day

On Friday, Australia will celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day.

Since 1988, the 4th August was chosen to celebrate the birthdays of First Nations children taken from their families at a young age known to us as the Stolen Generations.

Children's Day is a chance for all Australians to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, languages and the rich culture of all First Nations Australians who have provided love and care for their children for thousands of years.

Celebrating!

The Plant Poem

In the heart of a seed, buried deep so deep,

A tiny little plant lay fast asleep.

"Wake" said the sunshine, "Creep to the light."

"Wake" said the voice of the raindrops bright.

"Never give up and do your best,

We know you can do it so don't get stressed."

The little plant heard and it wanted to see,

What the wonderful outside world might be.

It stretched its roots and grew so tall

To be the best it could be and not miss it all.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office

RAT kits are available from the school office for all families.

For continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind families that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

Debating Report

This week Drummoyne PS debated against  Newtown Public School. The topic was ‘Sports Stars are Overpaid’.

The  Scomos were the away team. As the affirmative, they pointed out that sport star salaries are inequitable to those who contribute way more, such as teachers and care workers. They also argued that salaries are discriminatory against  women, high profile athletes are  poor role models, and that the salary cap system is a rort. Their team line was ‘They only entertain for a living’. Congratulations to Ist speaker Amelia Baggett-Grenfell, 2nd speaker Lucy Fernley, 3rd speaker Sophie Hill and team advisor Aria Shipp for putting up a great fight, despite narrowly losing the debate. Well done Sophie, who was chosen as debater of the day, for her excellent rebuttal. A very big thankyou to Lucy’s mum, Melissa for providing transport.

The negative team, the Bartons, comprising Triet Nguyen as 1st speaker, Sam Bains 2nd speaker, Aydin Dizdar 3rd speaker and Amber Worden team advisor, argued that sports stars deserve what they earn on the basis of  supply and demand and contribute tremendously to the sports industry, inspiring the next generation. They also factored in the health risks of being an elite athlete and the brevity of their careers. Their compelling team line was ‘The world demands, and sports stars supply’. The Bartons had a convincing win, with Aydin chosen as the debater of the day for his dynamic wrap up of the team’s case.

Also, thank you to our chairperson Gabi Buckman, and timekeeper Theo Kav and 'meet and greeters' Demi Pavlis and Lachlan Ong.

GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.
