STUDENT OF THE WEEK

HODC Report

LIFE EDUCATION - HEALTHY HAROLD

Each year students from Prep-Year 6 participate in Healthy Harold modules, which are delivered by Life Education. These are very high-quality educational modules that are aligned to our curriculum plan for the Health and Physical Education learning area. Students participate in one Module, which are approximately 45 minutes – 1 hour long.

The cost has been subsidised by our wonderful P&C so it is only $5 per student.

Forms and information was sent out on 2nd May and payments are due on 10th June. Please contact us if you require a new copy.

LEARNING TO READ

The graphic below is called ‘Scarborough’s Reading Rope’. It is a way of representing how there are many strands which come together for children to become skilled readers. There are two main parts of the rope – language comprehension and word recognition. Each of these have their own smaller stands.

Over the course of this year, we have shared information about how parents can support children to develop both language comprehension and word recognition. Keep an eye out for information sessions where we will discuss this in more detail with examples.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS

With funding from the P&C, we have recently been able to purchase over 1 000 new decodable texts for home reading and the teaching of reading. These books require covering so that they are protected and will last longer.

We are organising some afternoon tea ‘working bees’ of book covering to help get these books ready for student use. We will start with:

Tuesday 28 May

Thursday 30 May

Our working bees will be 2:30 – 3:30 in the library. Volunteers are welcome to join for some of the or all of the time. There will be tea, coffee and light refreshments.

REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
  • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
  • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.  QKR! How to Guide
QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.
  • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
  • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
  • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
  • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

2024 Premier's Reading Challenge

We are once again participating in the annual Premier’s reading challenge. From 7th of May until the 23rd of August, students record the books that they read at school and home. Students will have access to record sheets from week 4 to start recording their reading.

The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning.

For Prep — Year 6 students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience an allocated number of books based upon their year level during the reading period.

Children and students who complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement.

Chappy Week

Last week was Chaplaincy Week for 2024.  We'd like to thank Chappy Mike for the support that he provides to our students and staff within our school community in a variety of ways.  We appreciate all that you do for Beerwah State School.

AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS

AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS

Building a national picture of child health

From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.

The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.

Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.

The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.

AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.

Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection.

Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.

To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.

If you have any questions, you can contact Jennifer Horton on 54365555 or jhort45@eq.edu.au.

School Community

P&C Day

On Friday 24th May it was P&C Day.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! to our amazing P&C for all the wonderful things that you do for our school.

Being a volunteer can often be a thankless job.  Volunteers take on the jobs and responsibilities many of us would rather not do and they do it without complaints! We are so incredibly fortunate to have amazing, dedicated and passionate individuals on our P&C and school community to ensure our P&C is the best it can be.

P&C Report

P&C MEETINGS

Thank you to all who came to our meeting this week, we discussed lots of fundraising events and opportunities coming up, read on for further details and find out where we need your help.

Keep an eye on Facebook and Skoolbag (Audiri) for details of the next meeting.

VOLUNTEERING

Did you know: People who “give” – either money or their time – have been reported to be happier and healthier than those who don’t. Volunteering keeps you in a positive mood and can help lift you out of a negative mood.

The reason for this is that helping others triggers the reward pathway in the brain known as the mesolimbic system. It releases “feel-good” neurotransmitters such as oxytocin and vasopressin. The buzz you get from these neurotransmitters is sometimes known as “the helpers high”.

We always welcome new faces, putting your hand up to help doesn’t mean we’ll lock you in forever, if everyone can do just one thing, our children will benefit hugely.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends, they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

FACEBOOK PAGE

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. There’s currently a fantastic highlights video of our Easter show and it’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification. We’ll also share our tuckshop specials and any meal deal information, so if you don’t see the posts, you might miss out!

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C.

EVENTS & FUNDRAISING

Our next event is the annual book fair and we need your help to run it. Our book fair will run from Monday 10th – Wednesday 12th June. We are looking for helpers for an hour each morning and afternoon, please see the office if you can help, or email pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au.

This is a great opportunity to purchase some beautiful books for your child or a child you know. Books are such a wonderful resource for children. Reading gives our children the chance to explore outside of the daily routine, learn new things, and dream big. It gives them the opportunity to play.

The P&C will be catering at the sports carnival on Thursday 20th June (Week 10). We are looking for a few helpers to assist with cooking & serving the burgers and subs on the BBQ on the field. You can see your child compete while helping out! Please get in touch if you are able to help for an hour in the morning.

RECYCLING PROGRAMS

We are trying to play our part in looking after our environment, and encouraging our children to think about waste is a great first step. All classes currently have composting bins to take their food scraps to the composting heap for the kitchen garden and P&C are also signed up to collect hard to recycle items.

We ask that families start to save their empty toothpaste tubes and old toothbrushes, also any pens, texters, highlighters and markers that are no longer working. We collect these items to send to TerraCycle who will turn them into useful products. If you’d like to know more, please have a look at their website www.terracycle.com.au. We are also collecting used Glad (or similar) products – glad wrap, zip lock bags etc, but please make sure they are clean. Donations can be dropped off to school, collection boxes are available in the library, look out for the notice on Audiri (Skoolbag) for more information.

The school is also registered to collect drink cans and bottles through Containers for Change. There are bins throughout the school so you can drop off your recycling as you bring your child to school.

BOOK CLUB

Orders for the most recent book club have recently been sent home and the next issue will be sent out shortly. The best way to order is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office. The due date for orders is always stamped on the front of the brochure so don’t miss out! An extra bonus is that the school receives 15% of all order values to purchase books for our library. Books are such a wonderful addition to any child’s life and there are some amazing prices in the book club.

TUCKSHOP

Tuckshop is open each Friday, first break only. All ordering will be via Qkr! which will be made available one week before. All orders need to be placed by 3pm the Thursday prior so our volunteers have time to shop. The

menu can be viewed on the tuckshop noticeboard and on Skoolbag. Each week there is a different special for $5 and additional snacks and drinks can be ordered too.

If you have a little time on Friday morning to give Sarah a hand, she would be very grateful. Just 20 minutes to chop some fruit, or stick the labels on bags, that would be a huge help. pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

UNIFORM SHOP

The uniform shop will open each Wednesday afternoon 2.45-3.15pm, or at other times by appointment.

Now the weather is getting cooler, black jackets or jumpers are the required uniforms to keep them warm, the uniform shop has stock of these items, including many second hand and free jumpers/jackets. Come along and visit Janie on a Wednesday afternoon to keep your children warm.

The best way to order uniforms is ONLINE via Qkr! It’s quick & easy & there are no transaction fees.

Kandoo Joeys' Playgroup

This month is Mess Play May. Messy play is about fostering curiosity, imagination and growth. In May at Kandoo Joeys, children will have the opportunity to explore slimy, gooey dino swamps and lots of squishy mess and sensory activities. These experiences support the development of children’s fine motor skills, creative and cognitive development, hand-eye coordination, emotional regulation, problem solving, and more. At Kandoo Joeys Playgroup we provide an environment rich in learning through play that includes engaging hands-on activities, craft, stories, songs and social interactions.

Check out some of our photos from last week’s messy play session.

Kandoo Joeys is open to all families with before-school-aged children. We open every Wednesday morning from 9.00am-11.00am from Weeks 2-9 of the school Term. You will find us in J Block, next to the Admin Block. Bring along a hat and some morning tea for your little one and come and join in the fun and social connections as your children learn through play. For more information contact Linda Merwood at playgroup@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
