TERM 2 - Week 9 - 2025

Principal Note

Nhamirri Walal,

As we wrap up our first semester, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a very positive start to the school year. I feel so fortunate to lead such a special staff – a group of people who bring enthusiasm, dedication and kindness to our school community every day. Thanks to them, our students have already enjoyed so many fun and memorable events — from the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, Cross Country, Electives, Robotics, First Aid and Fire Safety workshops, Easter Parade, Dress Ups, Walk and Ride to School Day, ANZAC Assembly, Student-Led Conferences and Harmony Day… just to name a few!

Today’s Athletics Carnival was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our school calendar. Events like this not only showcase the impressive athletic abilities of many of our students but also highlight what an incredible community we have at NPS. The Cross Country last week and today’s carnival were such fun, uplifting and wholesome events. It was heart warming to see students cheering one another on, offering encouragement to those who needed a boost and celebrating every effort – including those finishing last, who also received a heartfelt round of applause. Sports carnivals bring out the best in many of our students and offer opportunities to remind us just how special our students truly are. I’d also like to congratulate Rick and his committee consisting of Gabby, Stella, Reese, Tony, Jake and Bec, who played an important role in pulling off these fantastic events.

Our newly elected School Council has also hit the ground running. Last weekend, Larissa, Yvonne, Emma and Renee participated in a whole-day COGSO Governance and Finance workshop along with our Business Manager, Sharon. This passionate group of parents has already hosted a successful whole-school Mothers' Day stall and is now eagerly preparing for other fundraising initiatives and special events. Their hard work will help us purchase items identified by students, provide opportunities to have fun together and serve our school community. Their support is invaluable and we’re grateful for their commitment and enthusiasm.

In staffing news, Jack Zendler has been working alongside Jake in 5/6B. With Jake stepping into the Senior Teacher role full time, Jack has been a fantastic addition to the 5/6 team, seamlessly fitting in and contributing to the classroom and team. Meanwhile, Hannah Howse has also arrived and been working alongside Meg Irvine, who will be finishing up at the end of this term. We wish Meg well and thank her for her positive contribution to NPS.

We also said farewell to the lovely Ms Morrow, who is off to have a baby. We have truly enjoyed having her as part of our staff and deeply appreciate the nurturing and supportive way she encourages her students to thrive. We wish Josie and Jarrod all the best on their exciting new adventure. Louise Hogarty and her family will be returning to Nhulunbuy, and we’re delighted that Louise will be teaching 1/2B from Term 3.

Louise Brooke is also on her way back to NPS for a Term 3 start. Louise will be working in Preschool and across Early Childhood, providing teacher coverage and early intervention support. It’s always handy to have returning staff who already know the school and town, and we look forward to greeting both Louises soon!

With a week of Semester 1 to go, I’d like to thank you all for a fantastic first semester. I hope you enjoy some special times together as a family, wish our staff and students a well-deserved break and look forward to all the great things we will continue to achieve together in Semester 2.

Warm wishes,

Rachel Blundell

School Captain Report

It’s been another action-packed week at NPS!

Last Wednesday, we held our Student-Led Conferences. It was wonderful to see so many families coming along to celebrate student learning. A big thank you to everyone who joined us – and how good was the sausage sizzle in the Quad? It was a crowd favourite!

We also celebrated Club’s Day, and it was fantastic to see everyone dressed in their club colours – from footy teams to dance, martial arts, BMX and more! A huge shoutout to 1/2B for raising the most money on the day – what an amazing effort!

On Friday, we laced up for the annual Cross Country event. Students from every year level gave it their all, showing great determination and sportsmanship. A big congratulations to Mitchell, the overall winning team for this year!

Adding to the excitement, 1/2B took the stage to perform “This is 1/2B” at assembly. They sang, danced, and lit up the room with their energy and confidence. What a wonderful celebration of class pride and teamwork – well done 1/2B!

We wrapped up the week with our most anticipated event of the year – the Athletics Carnival! The cheers were loud, the races were close, and the team spirit was sky high. Every student gave their best and had a blast.

What a week of energy, teamwork and NPS pride!

SRC NEWS

Every fortnight, the SRC gathers to discuss ‘student voice’—sharing ideas, suggestions, questions, and the highlights of NPS students. Recently, some positive topics included cross country, the new books in the library, Transition classes visiting the library on Wednesdays, more students wearing bucket hats and closed-in shoes, Club’s Day and Student Led conferences.

One key suggestion from the student parking lot is playing soccer in the quadrangle for Year 1/2 and 3/4 students and updating the school website.

The SRC are after donations of barbies, dolls, doll houses, marble runners, Lego and monster trucks for our pop-up playground.

A special shout out to Mr. Jake from the SRC!

Transition Fire Visit

St John Ambulance Visit

This week, students from preschool, transition and1/2 at NPS had the opportunity to participate in a visit from St John Ambulance. The sessions introduced students to essential first aid practices, covering everything from basic first aid skills to more advanced topics such as DRSABCD, choking response, wound and bleeding control, and burn care.

The activities were both educational and empowering, equipping students with the confidence to act in an emergency and reinforcing the importance of safety and care in our community.

NT Music School Performance

On the 11/06/25 NT Music School students at Nhulunbuy Primary School combined to present a performance for the Learning Centre students and teachers. Lewis Waldron-U’Ren performed a solo piece on the alto saxophone entitled ‘Time for Band’, followed by the guitar ensemble with a bluesy number called ‘I Spied a Spy’. To finish the concert all students combined for a rocking band number rendition of ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by the Black Eyed Peas. Students prepared well and put on a great performance
