October 2023, Term 4 Week 3

A Message from the Principal

It's that time of year when everything speeds up. Sales for Christmas have already started; Year 6 students have commenced transition to high school and everyone wants to know what is happening next year. Well, the school motto is Festina Lente (Hasten Slowly),  so we are focused on 2023 and closing out the school year with our traditional activities.

I'm off to New Zealand to spend some time with my mother and then travel with her back to Australia. Presentation Day and Christmas in the Gully have been scheduled and planned for.

There are a couple of things I can tell you about 2024 and that is Miss Tjarnah has been permanently appointed to our school. She is a brilliant and dedicated teacher and I hope you share my happiness in welcoming her to our school. Mrs Brooks will again be relieving principal at Cardiff North PS and Mrs Cole will relieve in her place again for 2024.

I would like to commend to you all our teaching staff. They are incredibly hard working and really care about the students and the school. The grandparents and parents that volunteer each day to support Breakfast Club and the canteen are making a difference every day and I cannot thank you enough ðŸ’–.

As the saying goes, some days are diamonds, some days are stone and that can be so true for all of us. To those of you that take the time to make a positive comment or post an emoji on the school Facebook page please know how much that means to us. Your appreciation means a great deal. Some of the kindest comments were left on the recent parent/carer survey and were uplifting to staff.

So, remember, Festina Lente and take the time to enjoy the now.

School Support Dogs

Our Education Support Dogs have a very important role within our school. We see every day the positive impact Sadie, Toby and Rennie have on our students. We have a responsibility to ensure we continue to inform and educate our community on the role and policies around our dogs at school.

Rationale

Plattsburg PS is committed to differentiation across the curriculum and to align with that we have Education Support Dogs. The dogs can provide support to students in a number of ways, including offering emotional support, recognising signs of anxiety, and helping improve concentration and communication skills as well as reducing the incidence of antisocial behaviour and bullying.

Guiding Principles for Practice Research into the effects of therapy dogs in schools identifies many benefits including:(Fine, 2015; Zents et al.,2017; Herbert & Lynch, 2017)

- Animals can teach empathy and appropriate interpersonal skills

- Help individuals develop social skills- The relationship between therapy animals and the therapist can be a model for a healthy relationship

- The presence of animals is soothing and can more quickly build the therapeutic relationship for children, adolescents and adults

- Patting an animal has been demonstrated to lower blood pressure, lower anxiety and lessen stress

- It has been shown that animals have the potential to lower human anxiety by simply being present

There is also evidence suggesting Education Support Dogs can:

- Reduce the severity of aggression and hyperactivity among children and reduce disruptive classroom behaviours which is conducive to learning

- Increase captivation of student attention when an animal is present

In summary, the Education Support Dogs at Plattsburg PS play a vital role in supporting our students. These dogs serve as ambassadors of empathy and kindness, fostering an inclusive school environment where students learn the importance of respect, compassion, and tolerance. Through their presence, they help create a sense of unity and discourage negative behaviours, ultimately promoting a safer and more harmonious school community. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our education support dogs please contact the office.

It's getting hot!

REMINDER TO BE SUN SAFE

With the temperature on the rise, as we get closer to summer, it is important your child has a hat and a refillable drink bottle. Students without hats have their play in the shade of the COLA during the lunch breaks instead of the gully.Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in students coming to the office wanting "loan hats" and we have now given them all out. So please check your child's bag for a hat before school each morning.

Dress like a Pirate and Grandparents Day

Ahoy Mateys!!

It's been a while, but it's time to turn all our landlubbers back to seafaring pirates.

Students are asked to dress like a pirate on Friday 3rd November.

This will be an extra special day as we will also be inviting our grandparents into school to hopefully share some of their memories of their days at school with our Plattsy Pirates.

At Plattsburg to coincide with our Pirate Themed Day we are also celebrating Grandparent’s Day on Friday  3rd November.

We will be having an assembly at 12:00 p.m. in our school hall! All school community welcome.

After the assembly grandparents are welcome to go into their grandchildren’s classroom for an activity and question time.

At 1:15 p.m. grandparents will have lunch with their grandchildren on our asphalt area.

Any questions please contact the school.

Welcome Jordy

We would like to welcome Jordy to Plattsy.

Jordy has recently graduated Year 12 at CCJSC where he was a recipient of a Deadly Award, "Commitment to Aboriginal and School Culture".

We are excited to have Jordy share his love of culture with our Plattsy students. He will be coming in each Tuesday to work with our didge boys where he will also be teaching them dance.  We look forward to seeing our Cultural groups perform later this year.

What's Been Happening at Plattsy

Oakvale Wildlife Park Excursion

Our K-2 students enjoyed an amazing day at Oakvale Wildlife Park last week. Students day begun when they hopped on board the Tractor-Trailer Ride around the park. They passed a variety of animals, listening to the fun and educational commentary along the way. There were so many animals to see.

Students also visited Koala Country for a show and had a turn at feeding the baby farm animals. It was a big day for our little ones.

Day for Daniel

Students were reminded of the importance of keeping themselves safe. Each year we wear red and through discussion and specific activities, students are reminded of ways to keep themselves and their peers safe.

It is important to keep the conversation going with your children around keeping themselves safe. For more information around the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, head to their website,

Keep up to date with all our messages
