Principal's Report

Tuesday 2nd May 2023

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to term 2. This is the shortest term that I can ever remember. It is 8 weeks and 3 days long, so things may seem a little rushed over the next few weeks.

Tomorrow our grades 4. 5 and 6 students head off to Forest Edge Camp. This is an adventure activity camp with bushwalks, a flying fox, archery, hut building and indoor rock climbing. It is set in a beautiful environment in Neerim South. I will be heading to Forest Edge on Thursday to spend a day with the children (and to tackle the flying fox!!! 😊). Thanks so much to Joe, Jessica, Amy and Vicki who are all giving up their family time to attend the camp with the children. I hope that they all have a wonderful time at camp.

Next week, we start the whole school swimming program. This year our two weeks of swimming will be spilt into one week in May and one week in October. The timetable during this week is a masterful work of art to make sure that we make the most out of each day that includes a trip to Gisborne Aquatic centre. Lunch times are staggered, so please call the call the school if you need to pick children up early. Children will be placed in groups allocated by the swim teachers. On the first day they will assess the children in their group and move them to a different level if needed. Parents are welcome to come down to the pool and watch the lessons.

On Friday 12th May, FOS are organising a high tea to celebrate Mother’s Day. It will be held in the school hall from 2.30-4.00pm. Between 3.30 and 4pm I will supervise the children in the yard (as per a normal yard duty day). Please make the time to come along to eat some delicious food and spend some time celebrating. RSVP on QKR!

On Friday 19th May our Grade 2/3 students will be going on an excursion to Kyneton to see The Orkestra Llektriq. This is a modern technologically augmented orchestra. The students will learn about instruments from the past and how technology has enhanced them. They will also do a backstage tour of the sound and lighting equipment.

That night, to further add to the musical theme, we have our Neon Disco. This will be on from 6pm-8pm. Children will get a goodie bag and drink, as well as some hot food as they boogie the night away. This is always a much loved event on our school calendar.

Whew!! So much on, but through it all we will continue to focus on learning and wellbeing.

All our students are now involved in the Skodel program, where they do a regular wellbeing check-in via a dedicated school app, and we track how they are travelling. If any student uses a key word (such as “bullying”) I get an immediate email informing me and I can follow it up immediately.

As a staff we look at the Skodel data we are getting, and we can address whole school issues (such as end of term fatigue) as well as create individual programs for students who are not travelling well. This program has certainly helped us to hone in on student wellbeing, and allowed us to take proactive actions to support our students.

This term I commence school tours for Foundation 2024. The system has changed a little and prospective students are now expected to be enrolled in a school by the end of July. If you know of any parents who would like their child to attend the school, please let them know that school tours have started.

Have a lovely week everyone.

Trish

Vandalism at the School

Sadly, over the holidays we had some vandalism in the school. Someone has come in and deliberately smashed flowerpots and broken a hose. I love that our school is able to provide people with facilities that they can use to stay fit and healthy BUT it is really disappointing that some are choosing to do the wrong thing.

Kimochis on camp

The Kimochis characters, Bug, Cat, Cloud, Lovey Dove and Huggtopus are off to camp to have fun and support our grade 4 to 6 kids! Here are a few quick activities you can do with your child to help them work through their night before camp jitters!

  • Write your own amazing camp list!
  • Our brains will very easily focus on a worry list. Sometimes it can get so focussed on worries that it doesn’t think about anything else. To help it out, let’s write an amazing list!

These are the things that your child is looking forward to doing at camp. If you can find ten things, that would be amazing! If you just find three things, that’s plenty okay! Remember, being worried doesn’t get rid of the positives. You can enjoy the wonderful things about camp even if you have some worries.

  • Put your Brave upfront
  • Share with your child that Brave is not a “super hero” feeling. One cannot be Brave unless we have other feelings, such as scared. Reassure your child that when we put our brave in front of our scared, we still feel scared, but our scared gets a little smaller so we can try new things.

  • Nesting hearts
  • The Kimochis Nesting Heart is one heart nestled inside another. When you are separated from someone who will miss you, each person can keep a heart as a tangible way to stay connected.

Make your own nesting hearts and chat about when they found it hard to say goodbye and share stories about times when you have found it hard to be away from people they loved. Your child has been offered one of these to take home but you can also find the pdf below.

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

    Hello everyone,

Hello everyone and welcome to term 2! This term is going to be very busy and exciting.

The grade 4s, 5s and 6s are going to camp on Wednesday the 3rd to Friday the 5th May. They will be going to Forest Edge CYC and will be spending  three days and two nights on camp and will be doing a lot of fun activities such as flying fox, bush cookery and hut building. They will take the bus there and back.

Next week the students will be doing intensive swimming at the Gisborne Aquatic Centre and will be doing that for the entire week. If you have not dropped off the ability form yet, you will need to drop it off at the centre.

On Friday the 28th of April some of our students went to the district cross country event. See full report and photos below from 2 of our grade 3/4 students to find out more about how it all went.

    Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge

    District Cross Country

On Friday 28th April, the schools in our area went to compete in the District Cross Country. There were lots of students who ran in each age group at Dixon Field.

The top ten runners from each age group were chosen to compete in the Division Cross Country competition, but the top 15 got stickers, just in case one of the top ten people couldn’t go to Division.

The 9 and 10 boys and girls ran 2km and the 11, 12 and 13 year old boys and girls ran 3km.

It was very fun and a bit hard but we did it eventually.

Some people got to a Division level from our school (MMPS) Moser (Grade 5) and Pearl (Grade 4).

We would like to congratulate everyone who competed and thank Ms Probert and Catherine for taking us there and Mrs Saunders for organising it.

    Digital Technology at MMPS

As telling stories using those things called 'words' is so, Term 1, for the start of this term, our Junior students were tasked to tell a story using code.

Using Scratch on the iPad, students used block code to create interactive stories.

We had stories about horses, gardens, fairies, speeding cars and.... farts, yep, it would seem that it is a universal norm that when you show a young person how to record and code audio digitally, the first thing they do is fart (or burp, we had those too)

Yes, I know, I am creating the future leaders of tomorrow...

    Daniel.

    Mother's Day High Tea
