Newsletter: Term 4 Issue 9

Principal's Message

First of all, on behalf of the staff and students at Newman Primary School, we would like to extend a massive thank you to our Principal Mr Sheridan for his work over the past 2 years. Mr Sheridan has been an extremely valuable asset and leader in our school. Chris has taken a fixed term role as Co-ordinator of Road Safety and Drug Education for the Pilbara for 12 months, working from Perth. We would like to wish Chris and his family all the very best with this new appointment. He will be sadly missed by us all!

I have been given the opportunity and accepted the Principal position for the remainder of the term. I am very excited to continue moving the school forward in a positive direction.

I would like to welcome all our existing families back to Newman PS in Term 4 and a warm welcome to our new families who have joined us. Our first assembly was hosted by the student leadership team and what a wonderful job they have been doing. Congratulations to all award recipients on the day, you have made a great start to the term.

R U Ok day was held in Week 1 where parents, students and staff participated in a special assembly and a range of activities including community stalls. Well done to all those that made the day happen. A special mention to Miss Goodfield and the wellbeing team who organized this event.

Friday, week 2 was the Bloody Slow Cup assembly. This moving event was well led by our student leaders and supported by our School board, P&C, Newman Police, Police from other states, WA Police Pipe band, Constable Care, community members who performed the Maori Haka and families of the fallen officers. Thank you to everyone who donated to Policy Legacy on this day.

Last week we celebrated World Teacher's Day. A massive thankyou to all the teachers for their dedication and work they do to support the students learning.

Congratulations to our Year 1 students who performed so enthusiastically, whilst telling the story of the 3 Little Pigs at our last assembly. This was an outstanding performance, and you all certainly knew the story, together with the actions from our Talk for Writing program. Well done to you all.

 Planning for 2024

I am currently engaged in the planning process for 2024. Part of this planning needs to start with our potential class structures which are based on projected school numbers.

I am requesting that families inform the front office as soon as possible if they know that their children will not be returning to Newman Primary School in 2024. This will give us a more realistic idea of the number of students we need to cater for next year. It also assists with budgeting, as our school funding allocation is based upon student numbers.

The following are the guidelines around class sizes: Kindergarten - 20 students, Pre-primary - 27 students in a purpose-built centre, Year 1-3 - 24 students and Year 4-6 - 32 students.

If we have multi-age classes, this number generally drops by 1 or 2 students. Often parents believe that single stream classes are ‘better’, however multi age classes are just as good, with great teaching relationships and practice being the key to children’s schooling. It is important to realise that even in a class that is a single year group, the academic, social and emotional differences can be as diverse as a multi-age class.

If you are leaving town in the coming weeks or at the end of the year, please send in an email to newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au or contact our front office on 9154 3900. This information will greatly assist our planning for 2024.

2024 Student Placement Requests

If you believe your child has particular considerations regarding class placement for 2024 please contact Robyn Hudson directly by, letter or email at Robyn.Hudson@education.wa.edu.au All requests will be treated with complete confidentiality and will be taken into consideration; however, there are no guarantees. In structuring classes there are many influencing factors that will be considered including friendships and class dynamics.

Requests received after Friday 24 November 2023 will not be able to be considered.

School Board

Newman Primary School Board works with the school community to achieve the best outcomes for our students. It plays an important role in contributing to good school governance so that school resources are used efficiently, and community expectations and the school’s priorities reflect the needs of students. The functions of the board are covered by legislation and include both approval and advisory roles.

The Board makes these decisions with the principal and other relevant decision makers who ensure the decisions adhere to legislative and policy requirements. Principals may also seek the advice of the Board to inform themselves before making management decisions. Board members have the right to understand the principal’s decisions (except where they involve confidential information and decisions about people or families). We are seeking parent representation on the school board for 2024.

Newman Primary School Board meet every term, in the evenings. If you feel this is something that may be of interest to you, or you would like further information, please contact either Jodi Wright – Chair of NPS School Board via email at jodi.wright@iinet.net.au or the principal Robyn.Hudson@education.wa.edu.au

What's been happening in Room 6

We are thrilled to share the fantastic progress made by our talented students in Room 6 during our recent Talk for Writing unit. Over the past few weeks, the class has been engaged in an exciting and creative adventure as they delved into the classic tale of "The Three Little Pigs."

In our exploration of this beloved story, the students have not only immersed themselves in the narrative but also reimagined and recreated it in their own unique ways. They've stepped into the shoes of the characters, taking on the roles of the inventive pigs and the cunning, huffing, and puffing wolf.

The Talk for Writing approach has truly allowed our students to flourish in their language skills. Through imitating the story, they have deepened their understanding of story structure, character development, and descriptive language. This hands-on experience has empowered them to craft their versions of the tale, infusing it with their creativity and individual perspectives.

Using drama, discussions, and a plethora of engaging activities, the students have honed their speaking and listening skills while embodying the characters and their actions. By re-enacting scenes from the story, they've not only had tremendous fun but also internalized the story's essence, enhancing their comprehension and retention.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by Room 6 throughout this unit. Their creativity, teamwork, and willingness to step into character have been truly inspiring to witness.

Thank you for your continuous support and encouragement in nurturing our students' love for storytelling and language.
