Acknowledgement of Country

Principal's Pen

Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

May the fourth term be with us – and welcome back, with special mention to our new families.

Our culmination for 2023 begins now.  Winding down to the end of a school year is a foreign concept within a school environment and as you will note from the attached planner, there are a number of significant events planned, some in celebration and others to help promote our community spirit.

World Teachers’ Day, (Friday, October 27) is a wonderful opportunity to send a message of support to our teachers and assistants or give a special greeting on the day.  The theme this year is Hats off to Teachers, so “dip your lid” to our wonderful staff on the day.

Finally, please look out for the Steve Manzoney Award nomination process.  Steve was a highly valued member of our school community and the award named in his honour is to recognise a person within our community that has gone above and beyond in the support of children associated with Glengarry Primary School.

Steve Manzoney Award - Nominations

This is an annual award presented at the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony in December.

The award has been in place since 2004 and was established to honour the hard work and commitment to the school and Duncraig community by one of our parents, Mr Steve Manzoney who sadly passed away in September 2004.  In 1999 Steve took up a position on the P&C Social Committee and committed an enormous amount of time and energy organising a variety of functions that raised valuable funds for the school and brought the community together.  In 2001 he also was the P&C Treasurer.  He was always willing to lend a hand around the school, helping out on carnival days and other school events.  He was someone you could rely on.  Steve was also involved in the Duncraig community, coaching basketball, umpiring T-ball and actively involved in the junior football as a coach and runner.

We are now requesting nominations for this award.  The criteria can be found on the nomination form which can be downloaded within this article.

Around Glengarry

Interschool Sports Carnival

We had a wonderful two-day interschool Athletics competition against our Carine District Schools association schools, including; Carine, Duncraig, Davallia, Marmion, North Beach, Poynter and Sorrento. A massive improvement in our field day events saw us in the top half of the schools at the start of the second day of competition. Overall we finished 6th overall and I can confidentially say our students behaved beautifully and represented our school well. Some individual achievements include Nate Ingham (Runner up Champion Boy Year 3, Louise Baur Champion Girl Year 4 and Alex Kalina Champion Boy Year 6.

Thanks to all of our student competitors, parents cheering from the sidelines and teaching staff who supported on the days!

Let's aim for 4th in 2024!

Glengarry Speak Up

On Wednesday, September 20th, Glengarry hosted its Speak Up Finals, providing an opportunity for students who reached the finals to demonstrate their outstanding speaking skills to the entire school. Congratulations to all the students who made it to the finals, and a heartfelt appreciation to our esteemed judging panel—Mrs. Helen Barns, Mrs. Carmel Ward, and Mrs. Catherine Rudd. A special thank you is extended to the Lions Club for their generous donation of medallions for this memorable event.

    Hope Group

    What’s been happening….

Room 6’s vegetables are growing fabulously! They are now ready to plant out into the kitchen garden.

Room 5 & 6’s native plants, near Alfreton Drive, have had the weeds cleared. They need weeds pulled from around the plants and plants need water.

Barry Rowland, our super gardener, has removed the lavender and cleared around the kitchen raised garden beds.  Say ‘Hi’ when you see him. More families have helped us move compost into the beds we are preparing. The next jobs are - turn and sift the soil, then plant and water seedlings.

Lots of the seeds in the nursery,  are ready to plant by Room 1.

Thursdays after school 3-4pm is when HOPE meets.  We need your help!

Next week:- come taste some bush tucker. (seeds from the Dianellas and Qandong fruits)

    Health and Hygiene

    Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

    Department of Health LINK

    DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

    EMPATHY THROUGH LISTENING AND RECHARGING

How is your empathy meter going?  Empathy is the ability to imagine and understand the thoughts, perspective, and emotions of another person.  Literally translated from the Greek for ‘in’ (em) and ‘feeling’ (pathy).  ‘In feeling’ for another.  Empathy helps us feel seen and be known.  We like others to be empathetic towards us, but we need to start with ourselves and be empathetic towards others.  We can’t show empathy without listening, so listen to your friend, child, parent, without interjecting.  Whether we agree with their opinion or perspective is not the main issue here.  Showing that we respect them to hear their opinion or perspective is the main issue.  Try listening without interrupting today. I know it is challenging, especially when you are a fix it type of personality!  When we listen, we may learn something new, and we may be able to ask another question which helps the person to find their own solution.  At the very least, the person will ‘feel seen and known’ by us hearing them.  Oh, and resist the urge to multitask whilst listening to your spouse, colleague, child!  Be present and turn your empathy meter on (think of a taxi meter).   Sometimes we can’t listen anymore.  We are ‘out of empathy’.  Parents can feel like this at the end of school holidays!  This is when we need to listen to ourselves and do some self-care.  Find an activity that helps you to relax and allow your thoughts to float over things without landing on anything specific.  Exercise, art and crafts, reading a book on the couch, a walk in a garden are all wonderful ways to listen to self, to re-charge, so that we can switch our empathy meter back on for others.  Empathy is like a smile, it gives much, but costs nothing except our time.
