From the Principal

Here we are at Week 8 of Term 2 already!  Following quite a bit of illness across the school, I hope families who have been affected are now in recovery mode and we can settle into a healthy winter soon.

Reports and Learning Statements

Semester 1 reports for Reception to Year 6 students will be sent home on Monday 1st July. Report comments will focus strongly on how students have achieved in relation to the curriculum with an emphasis on Religious Education, English and Mathematics. Reports will include a grade for each learning area for Year 1-6 students as well as an indication of how well students are demonstrating the 5 Respects. Opportunities to meet with teachers for a further learning conversation, following on from the written report, will be available early next term.

Families of our graduating preschool students will each receive a Learning Statement on their last preschool day in Week 10. This statement summarises their child’s learning in relation to the Early Years Learning Framework over their 12 months of Preschool.

Uniform

Most of our students are wearing their winter uniform neatly and respectfully this term. Thank you to you our parents who no doubt work ‘behind the scenes’ to make this happen!

It is expected that all children are wearing the correct winter formal uniform each day except when their class has PE or fitness and are required to wear the sports uniform.  Please ensure your child respects our school uniform policy which each family agreed to adhere to as a condition of enrolment.

A reminder that new uniform pieces are available from Vinnies at 449 Port Road Croydon.  If you are looking for second hand uniforms, there is a private Facebook group  - St Joseph’s Hindmarsh Second Hand Uniforms.

Strength Switch Parenting Course – Advance Notice

We are very pleased to be able to offer this course FREE OF CHARGE to our families in Term 3 thanks to the receipt of a Parents in Education grant.  This series of workshops will help parents of any aged child to adopt or improve their strength-based parenting. A strengths-based approach to parenting has been linked to:

  • Increased wellbeing and life satisfaction
  • Improved grades and academic achievement
  • Lower rates of depression and anxiety
  • Increased parent satisfaction

This course, facilitated by Courtney Quigley, Visible Wellbeing Facilitator and Coach, will complement the whole school learning your child has been doing as a part of our Visible Wellbeing project. It has been developed by Professor Lea Waters, pioneer in the field of positive psychology and is based on her book ‘The Strength Switch’.

The course will occur over three sessions here at school from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on August 20, August 27 and September 3 (please note this date was incorrect in the last newsletter).  Please get in early to secure your place at no cost!

International Day June 26 – Celebrating Cultural Diversity - Everyone Belongs!

Children (and adults!) are invited to wear a national costume or the flag colours of a country that is part of their heritage for our International Day on June 26.  For students not wearing a costume or colour, sport uniform can be worn on this day.

Parents and extended family are invited to join us for an assembly/costume parade at 9am on this day.  Please feel very welcome to join in the celebration with your own national costume or flag colours! Visitors are welcome to stay on to share a simple morning tea in the Hall at the completion of this event.  Please RSVP for the morning tea here to support us with set up and catering. If you are able to help with set up or pack up of morning tea, please let Seva Maitianos know as soon as possible seva.maitianos@sjsh.catholic.edu.au.

Later in the day children will have the opportunity to enjoy a special lunch if they have ordered from the International Day menu (orders closed today at 3pm!) and we will celebrate the close of our International Day at 2:10pm with some superb African dance and drumming with the Sun of Africa Dance and Drum Ensemble. Parents and visitors are welcome to come back at 2:10pm and join us for this performance!

A Prayer for Diversity

God of all, you created all people in your image. We thank you for the astonishing variety of races and cultures in this world and especially here in our St Joseph’s School community.

Help us to know that our lives are enriched by the diversity and vibrancy of others and that, through them, we can come to know you better.

Be with us as we find the courage to be a place of welcome for all and a place where everyone belongs.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

Never see a need without doing something about it

Mary MacKillop

As you are aware during Term 2, our Minnie Vinnies are leading a project to help those in need by collecting warm clothes, blankets, and non-perishable food items. As the weather gets colder, it's important to remember that there are people in our community who don't have a warm and safe place to sleep each night.

We want to extend a big thank you to the families who have already donated to our 2024 Vinnies Winter Appeal. Your generosity is making a real difference!

All donations will support our Vinnies Hindmarsh Conference, who work tirelessly to help the most vulnerable members of our local community. Each classroom has a donation basket, and we'll continue to collect items for the next few weeks.

Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. Thank you for your support!

Some ideas for donations include:

  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Two-minute noodles
  • Canned soup
  • Canned Baked Beans/Spaghetti
  • Milo/Hot Choco
  • Blankets
  • Warm Socks
  • Gloves
  • Beanies

World Refugee Day

Whoever welcomes a migrant welcomes Christ”

Pope Francis, 2024

World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20, shining a light on the rights, needs, and dreams of those forced to flee their home countries due to conflict or persecution. This year’s theme focuses on solidarity with refugees—a call for a world where refugees are welcomed.

Refugees need our solidarity now more than ever. Solidarity means keeping our doors open, celebrating their strengths and achievements, and reflecting on the challenges they face.

Solidarity with people forced to flee also means finding solutions to their plight – ending conflicts so they can return home in safety, ensuring they have opportunities to thrive in the communities that have welcomed them, and providing countries with the resources they need to include and support refugees.

Visible Wellbeing Project

Meet Bob, our Strength Spotter

This term, the Year 1/2 classes have had a special visitor… a strength spotter! They sit up high in the classroom observing the students and looking out for anyone who is demonstrating the focus strength of the week.

So far we have award recipients who have shown Respect and Resilience… this week, our focus was on KINDNESS!
