TOKSAVE - Week 4 Term 3 2024

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Netball

Thank you to Ms Langush and her team for their efforts making the inter-school netball carnival with OLSH International School a great success last weekend. Congratulations to all of the students from both schools for their excellent behaviour and sportsmanship over the weekend.  A great weekend was had by all.

National Exams

The year 8 and 10 National examinations are rapidly approaching. The school has been working hard to ensure that all students are well prepared. We ask that parents and carers partner with the school in encouraging all students to stay focused. Screen time and use of mobile phones is one distraction in the leadup to the National Exams. I challenge all parents to severely limit or remove use of screen time and mobiles during the weeks leading up to the exams.

Attendance

Attendance at school is very important. Children need to be at school on time every day to succeed in their learning. We have seen some unnecessary absenteeism and lateness. If a child is absent, parents / carers need to email the class teacher or send a note on return to the school.

School Council

This term’s School Council meeting was on Thursday, the 8th August. Thank you to those in attendance and to the School Council for their continued support of our school.

Year 5/6 Camp

Next week, the year 5/6 class, accompanied by Mrs Romaso-Daimol, Ms Langusch and myself, will travel to Kavieng for their class camp. As part of their HASS Civics and Citizenship studies, students will visit the Provincial Assembly and Governor's House as well as visit the Marine Fisheries at Nago Island. Camp is also a great opportunity for students to develop their social skills and independence. We look forward to hearing about their camp at the week 6 assembly. Ms Yip will be the LIS acting principal for this time.

WRP

We had our first guest Speaker, who is a former WR trainee and currently working with HR, address the Trainees on Wednesday. She shared her experience as being a former student of WRP and now an employee of Newmont. She covered topics on adopting to workplace culture, time management and working in teams, comprising a diverse group of people. She also emphasised the importance of observing company rules and polices as well as safety culture. I would like to acknowledge and thank, Ms. Mayble Reba (HR Officer - HRBP), for accepting our invitation again to come and speak to our current WRP Trainees. A very inspiring speech based on her own experience as a former WRP student and very motivating and encouraging for the current Trainees of the WRP.

Next week, apart from our normal routine, we will have a couple of programs coming up. On Monday we will have the Mine / Process Plant Tour and Talk. On Thursday we will have the Upstander & TMTM training. These are required programs that are included for every new batch of WRP Trainees recruited.

Eligible Year 10 upgraders are expected to sit for their National Exams later this year.
