Farleigh State School Newsletter

Term 2 Week 6 2025

Messages from the office

A Message from the Principal

 Hello families!

We are well into the assessment phase of the term, with students across the school taking the opportunity to show us what they have learned in all areas of their learning.

At Farleigh, we encourage the students to demonstrate their learning in multiple ways. From written or digital format, using posters or brochures and even in student teacher conferences. As teachers, we are always monitoring and observing student progress and collecting evidence of this learning. This supports a ‘whole picture’ of student progress through the curriculum and it is what we use to create end of Semester report cards.

We not only assess content learned. We monitor reading progress, social and emotional learning, growth of students’ accountability and respectful interactions with adults and each other.

READING

We thank all families who are supporting our school priority of reading by reading at home, encouraging great reading habits and supporting students to return their folders on Fridays for recording as they work towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards (and ultimately – Platinum level reading)

On reflection, we have noted that a number of students require significant support to remember their folder, hand in their folder and also borrow weekly from the library. Please chat with your child about ways to make this part of their home / school routine. We are working together as a staff also to create more opportunities for the students to be ‘reading with purpose’ at school.

Successful readers are more engaged, show strong growth academically in all areas and have more opportunities to be successful later in life.

SHOP FOR SCHOOLS

VERY exciting to see Farleigh still sitting at the top of the table at Mount Pleasant shopping centre! Please keep uploading your receipts! The winner of the competition receives a share in $13,500 in prizes, so it’s very possible that with a strong community effort we can stay at the tippy top of the table and bring this home!

BOOK FAIR

Thank you for your support of our annual Book Fair. We received $160 in Scholastic credit which we used to purchase more books for our library and for the students.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE

You will have seen the progress on the walkway replacement, and by the time this newsletter is published we anticipate it will be open for use! It’s a fresh, new feel in this area of the school that we are all enjoying. We are in communication with Infrastructure and QBuild in regards to future projects around the school, including – hopefully – two new playgrounds. As soon as we hear back from the ‘powers that be’ in regards to progress on this issue, we will communicate updates with the community.

CALENDAR

Feedback from parents has been supportive of the continuation of the newsletter as well as the Weekly Happenings / Updates on Audiri. Please let me know if there is anything additional you would like included in future editions.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Prep/1/2 News

P-2 News

Dear families,

As we end week 6 and roll into week 7 of term 2, it’s hard to believe how quickly the year is flying by!

This time of year, is always special in our classroom as we take a moment to reflect on how far our young learners have come — and celebrate all they’ve achieved.

Over the past few weeks, students have been busily engaged in showing off their learning through individual assessment tasks. From reading informative texts and writing short reports to working with numbers and exploring science concepts, there’s been lots of excitement and growth across our Prep, Year 1, and Year 2 learners.

Assessment time is an opportunity for us to gather a clear picture of each child’s progress. These tasks are done in a calm, familiar setting and are carefully designed to reflect what your child has already been learning in class. Whether it’s reading aloud, writing a few key facts, or solving maths problems, your child is showing what they can do — and we are so proud of them!

We’ll be using this information to help guide our next steps in learning and to write each child’s end-of-semester report. More importantly, it reminds us how much learning happens when curiosity, persistence, and confidence come together in the classroom.

Over the final weeks of term, we will also be taking time to celebrate everyone’s efforts and progress.

The P-2 class are on the count down to our 100 days of learning in 2025. I have purchased all children a 100 days of learning t-shirt to wear on the day. I will send this home on the Monday of the last week of school, so they are ready to wear on Friday the 27th of June. There will be more information sent home regarding food for our celebration – bring along a plate of food to share.

Have you heard about our class pets? They are the best pets ever and have been named and loved by the P-2 children. Ask you child to find out more.

Thank you for your continued support in making our classroom a safe and joyful place to learn. We’re so proud of all our little learners — and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Year 3/4 News

3/4 Class News!

 Hello families!

Things are chugging along well in the Hub. We are currently in the planning phase of our Information Reports.

Students have learned the purpose of an information text, similarities and differences between information texts and narratives, the features of information texts (what they need – title, headings, paragraphs, diagrams, captions, graphs / tables) and the language features needed to create an information text (noun groups, verb groups, technical words / descriptions).

We are now at the point where we have selected our topic (Australian animal or Australian place) and we have created questions we want to research to guide us to write facts under headings. The next two weeks will be spent researching and note taking, writing sentences (simple, compound and complex) to create our paragraphs.

Students have 4 options available to them when deciding how to format their Information Report –

Option 1 – Written text / essay

Option 2 – Create a book

Option 3 – PowerPoint

Option 4 – Poster or brochure

Once the students have completed their report, they then have an option to work together to learn how to film and create a short documentary (this is an extra task that students will only complete once they finish their assessment piece)

Once these are finished we will be excited to share with families!

 Warm regards

Angela (Mon – Wed 3/4 English and Maths) / Principal

Year 5/6 News

Hello Year 5 and 6 families!

Year 5/6 Well Term 2 is just flying by and the Year 5/6 class have been super busy!

English:

We have investigated the structure and features of Information texts. A variety of topics have been read, including natural disasters, animals, conspiracies and Guinness Book of Records attempts! Needless to say, the students have done well analysing and writing information texts.

Mathematics:

This term has been full of challenges in the Mathematics department. So many new skills have been learned around using technology for data collection and representation. I am soooo proud of the students for their positive attitude and perseverance in learning and applying their new found skills.

Year 3-6

A super quick post for a super quick term!

HASS:

This term the 3/4 grade has learnt about and researched a commemoration. This included writing questions and interviewing people. Year 5/6 studied The Australian Gold Rush and analysed many sources of information.

Design Technology:

Students in 3/4 compared old and new food production and storage systems. They designed a lunch meal that included sustainable elements. Year 5/6 have focused on sustainability in food production and have developed environmentally conscious food plant packaging.

Kind regards,

Inclusion Support

Morning Reading Groups:

Our targeted phonics lessons have been going well this term and I am already seeing improvement in skill and confidence. Regular attendance is important for reading groups which start at 8:30am.

Enrichment Group:

Last week, our Enrichment Group headed to Calen DSC for a Robotics Training Day which was a fantastic opportunity to develop our skills in coding and robotics. Our students had a great time working on challenges with students from Hampden and Calen. We came away from the Training Day feeling confident for our next project which is Mackay Junior Robotics Competition on 24th July. A special thank you to Naomi Reynolds for transporting our students to and from the event!

Colouring Club:

We have entered the CQU reconciliation Week Art Exhibition with a collaborative piece called “Bridging is a Collaborative Effort”. Three students from P-2 used Aboriginal symbols to convey their understanding of this year’s Reconciliation Week theme, “Bridging Now to Next”. Their designs were fused together and broken down into smaller pieces to be coloured in, then reassembled into a vibrant artwork.

HPE:

Our students have been working building their athletic skills this term in preparation for our Athletics Carnival at the end of the term, more information to come soon.

Show Art

With the Mackay Show fast approaching, students have been coming to the Prep-2 room to work on their very own pieces of art for the children's art section. They have been busy coming up with ideas to create some colourful characters using acrylic markers.

Can not wait to see their finished pieces.
