Message from the Principal

As we move through Week 8, it has been an exciting and productive period for our school community, with a strong focus on innovation, learning, and student achievement. The past week has showcased the strength of our STEM programs and reinforced Lae International School’s commitment to preparing students for a rapidly changing and technology-driven future.

STEMPunks Visit and STEM Fair Success

One of the highlights of the past week was the visit of the STEMPunks team, who worked with our students and staff to deliver engaging, hands-on learning experiences that challenged students to think creatively, solve problems, and explore real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Their visit culminated in our annual STEM Fair, which provided students with an outstanding opportunity to showcase their skills, ideas, and innovative thinking. The enthusiasm and engagement demonstrated by students across all year levels was truly impressive and reflects the growing culture of STEM learning at Lae International School.

I would like to sincerely thank Theodist for their continued sponsorship and support of both Lae International School and our STEM initiatives. Partnerships such as these provide valuable opportunities for our students and help us continue to expand and strengthen our STEM programs.

I would also like to thank the STEMPunks team for their expertise, energy, and commitment to supporting STEM education. Their work aligns perfectly with our vision of developing critical thinkers, problem solvers, and future innovators.

Investing in Technology for Learning

This week also saw the rollout of new tablets to students in the Primary School. This significant investment further enhances the learning opportunities available to our younger students and supports the integration of technology into everyday classroom experiences.

Our school’s continued focus on STEM education, together with ongoing investment in information technology resources, is made possible through the support and vision of our School Board. Their commitment to ensuring students have access to modern learning tools allows Lae International School to continue leading the way in STEM education within Morobe Province.

As technology continues to shape the world around us, it is essential that our students develop the digital literacy, creativity, and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in the future. We are proud to be providing opportunities that equip students with these important capabilities from an early age.

Year 12 ACT Scaling Test

Congratulations to our Year 12 students, who successfully completed their ACT Scaling Test this week. This assessment is an important step in the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate pathway and contributes to the calculation of students’ ATARs later in the year.

The professionalism and maturity demonstrated by our Year 12 cohort throughout this process has been commendable. We wish them every success as they continue their studies and prepare for their remaining assessments and examinations.

Year 11 Camp to Kavieng

Next week, the first group of our Year 11 students will depart for their annual camp in Kavieng. This program provides students with valuable opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, leadership development, and cultural experiences outside the classroom.

School camps are an important part of the educational journey at Lae International School, helping students build independence, resilience, and lifelong memories while strengthening friendships and connections with their peers.

We wish all students and staff involved a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding experience and look forward to hearing about their adventures upon their return.

Looking Ahead

As we approach the final weeks of the term, students should remain focused on their academic responsibilities and continue to take advantage of every learning opportunity available to them. The hard work and commitment displayed throughout the year are evident in the achievements we continue to celebrate as a school community.

Deputy Principal's Notices

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week, the school was buzzing with innovation, creativity, and technology as we hosted the 2026 LIS STEM Fair in partnership with Theodist. From robotic hands to sustainable energy solutions, our students showcased an impressive range of projects that highlighted their ingenuity, problem-solving skills, and passion for STEM. The quality of the entries was outstanding, and our students certainly did not disappoint.

The week began with the team from STEMPunks working alongside our primary students, providing valuable hands-on coding experiences. Through engaging and interactive lessons, students were introduced to coding concepts using micro:bits. It was wonderful to see students confidently exploring new ideas and developing their computational thinking skills. The excitement in the room was evident as students watched their code come to life and successfully complete the tasks they had programmed. Experiences such as these play an important role in fostering curiosity and nurturing the next generation of innovators.

I would like to sincerely thank Theodist for their outstanding support and partnership in making this year's STEM Fair such a success. Not only did they provide the major prizes for the winning teams across the various competition categories, but they also generously supplied stationery packs for every participating student. Their commitment to encouraging all students in their love of learning was greatly appreciated. We thank Theodist for investing in grassroots STEM education and supporting the development of future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technology leaders who will contribute to Papua New Guinea's growing technology sector.

This week also saw our Year 12 ACT students undertake their Scaling Tests on Tuesday and Wednesday. I would like to commend these students for their commitment and dedication throughout the year as they work diligently towards achieving their academic goals and pursuing their post-school aspirations. Their focus, perseverance, and preparation have been evident, and we wish them every success as they continue through this important stage of their educational journey.

In the secondary school, this week's homeroom activities centred on the theme "Responding Positively to Challenges." Students explored the key concept that difficult times reveal character, engaging in meaningful discussions about resilience, perseverance, and maintaining a positive mindset when faced with setbacks.

Students reflected on the idea that challenges are an inevitable part of life and that success is often determined not by the obstacle itself, but by how we choose to respond. They discussed that positive thinking is not pretending problems do not exist, but rather believing that we can learn, adapt, and move forward. A central question explored during homeroom was:

"What is this challenge teaching me?"

This serves as a timely reminder as students enter a busy assessment period. These discussions provide valuable opportunities for students to develop resilience, build positive habits, and work collaboratively with their homeroom teachers to set themselves up for success.

Looking ahead, our Year 10 students will lead this week's secondary assembly, focusing on World Humanitarian Day. They have been busy preparing presentations and filming around the school, and we look forward to seeing the creativity and thoughtfulness they bring as they explore the important role of humanitarianism in our communities and around the world.

Finally, we wish our Year 11 students who are travelling to New Ireland next week safe travels. This leadership-focused experience will provide valuable opportunities for students to further develop their leadership skills, build teamwork, and gain new perspectives through their experiences away from school.

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of Week 8, we reflect on the many achievements and successes accomplished during this short week of learning. We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for their hard work, commitment, and enthusiasm.

Assembly

Well done to 5RI for their wonderful learning assembly celebrating the rich and diverse cultures of Papua New Guinea. We also congratulate the students who received awards for consistently applying problem-solving strategies in both their learning and behaviour at school. A special mention goes to those students who achieved their Platinum Awards. Congratulations to all recipients on these outstanding achievements.

STEM Fair

This week, our library was buzzing with excitement as the STEMPUNKS Team worked alongside students from Grades 4 to 7, introducing them to coding through the use of Microbits. Teachers also had the opportunity to participate in a professional learning session with the STEMPUNkS team.

On Tuesday 25 August, finalists from Grades 3 to 9 proudly showcased their STEM projects for final judging. Congratulations to our Grade 7 students, who were crowned the 2026 STEM Fair Champions. We extend our sincere thanks to Theodist for sponsoring the event and providing prizes for our students.

IEA 50th Anniversary and Independence Celebration

Our IEA 50th Anniversary and Independence Celebration will take place in Week 10 on the last day of school. A letter has been sent home via Audiri to students in Grades 3 to 12 inviting volunteers to participate in the PNG Cultural Parade. If you would like your child to take part, please complete the reply slip through Audiri.

After School ECA Program

The After School ECA Program has now concluded for Term 3. We thank all facilitators and participants for their involvement and support throughout the term. Families are kindly asked to contact the relevant facilitators to settle any outstanding fees.

Information regarding Term 4 ECA options will be made available during Week 2 of Term 4.

Attendance and End of Term Reminder

We have just two weeks remaining before the end of Term 3. All students are expected to attend school until the final day of term, Friday 11th September. Normal lessons will continue until the last day of school, and attendance will be recorded as usual. Families of students with more than 30 days of absence will be contacted by the school office.

Secondary News – Week 8, Term 3

As Term 3 approaches its final two weeks, the Secondary Campus has experienced another productive week. The school thanks parents and guardians for their continued support and extends a warm welcome to all new students and families who have joined the Lae International School community this term.

Key Updates

  • Grade 10 ICCT Trial Examinations: The National Department of Education's Measurement Services Division is overseeing the Grade 10 ICCT Trial Examinations as part of national assessment preparations.

  • Grade 12 NOAS Applications: Information and invitation letters regarding the National Online Application System (NOAS) have been distributed to Grade 12 students. Students and parents are encouraged to review the materials carefully and follow all application requirements and deadlines.

  • Grade 10 IGCSE Examinations 2026: The final Cambridge IGCSE examination timetable has been shared via email and Audiri. Students should review their examination dates and continue preparing thoroughly.

  • Grade 12 ACT Scaling Test: Congratulations to all Grade 12 ACT students who successfully completed their ACT Scaling Test.

  • Grade 11 New Ireland Educational Trip: Grade 11 students will depart for New Ireland on Sunday, 30 August and return on Saturday, 5 September. The school hopes the trip provides valuable educational experiences and wishes all students a safe journey.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the boarding section of our newsletter. With just two more weeks before the end of term, our boarding students are working hard on their assessment tasks. We are proud of their effort and dedication, and we acknowledge our boarders who continue to be recognised through the Steps to Success awards.

Virtue of the Week: Creativity

This week, boarders were guided to reflect on why creativity matters in boarding life:

  • Problem-Solving Mindset: Boarders face daily challenges. Creativity teaches them to think outside the box and find constructive solutions.

  • Community Building: Creative activities foster collaboration and unity.

  • Leadership Development: Boarders who embrace creativity inspire others and encourage active participation in community life.

Discussing and working with boarders on the virtue of creativity reassures parents that your children at the LIS boarding house are not only achieving academically, but are also cultivating imagination and initiative. It demonstrates that our boarding house nurtures the whole person – mind, heart, and spirit.

Repentance Day Public Holiday

Our student leaders put together a short but fitting program to commemorate the day. The program allowed staff and students to gather together as a boarding community to reflect on the importance of humility, forgiveness, and renewal. This occasion reminded us that true strength is not found in pride, but in the courage to acknowledge our shortcomings and seek reconciliation.

Weekend Sign-Out

A friendly reminder to all parents and guardians to kindly observe the updated weekend sign-out protocol. This adjustment is designed to enhance students' safety, accountability, and overall well-being. Please communicate your requests for student leave early with the Head of Boarding.

Karate ECA for Boarders

The Karate ECA is progressing well, with excellent interest and attendance from both boys and girls. Beyond physical fitness, discipline is strictly emphasised. We are fortunate to have our boarding parent, Nigel Bana, available to assist our boarders with this important training.

End-of-Term Reminders

  • We have just two weeks remaining before the end of Term 3. All students are expected to attend school until the final day of term, Friday, 11 September. Boarders may travel home between Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 2026.

  • It is essential that boarders remain at school on Friday 11th September to participate in the IEA 50th Anniversary and Independence Celebrations.
