Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

The School Board met on Monday evening of this week with discussion including:

  • Public School Review Report – commendation & recommendations
  • Homework Policy – updated copy attached with this Newsletter.
  • 2023 Financial Agreement – discussed and noted by the Board
  • Business Plan – review of the current plan and discussion re. preparation for a new (2024-2026) plan

Semester One Student Reports will be sent out via Connect early next week, i.e. Monday, June 26.  Please ensure your Connect access is updated so reading and eventual electronic storage of the document is straight forward. Please note the following comment which refers to how grades are allocated in the middle of the school year:

  • The Department of Education’s Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting policy requires teachers to make judgements of student achievement in relation to expected standards. The descriptors of the standards have been developed to further help teachers determine whether a student’s achievement is at, above or below the expected standard for their year level at this stage in the year or when assessed against what has been taught in first semester.

Please talk with your child about their achievements and interrogate suggested areas for improvement.  It should be clearly noted that the term “satisfactory” on all reports should be interpreted as “expected”, i.e. for students who receive a “C” grade, this is the level at which they are expected to be working.

Finally, I sincerely appreciate the efforts of our teaching staff in generating this set of reports.  There has been a significant amount of care and intellectual thought given to each individual report representing a valuable update of each child’s progress.

And finally, our Associate Principal, Mrs Hannah Murdock (nee Cole), will now be using her married name. Mrs Murdock’s email address will remain unchanged.

Noongar Language Workshop

Last Friday, June 16th, we were lucky enough to have a whole school incursion on the Noongar language and songs from the wonderful and talented Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse.  The workshop was well received by students and staff and emphasized the significance of preserving Noongar language and culture, while also teaching original Noongar language songs.  The students all enjoyed singing Djinda Djinda (twinkle twinkle little star) and learning about the Bind Bindi (butterfly).

The Year Ones in Room 3 and 4 have written some awesome recounts about our Noongar Language workshop.  They have also done some wonderful illustrations.

We look forward to continuing our cultural celebrations next Friday at our Dook-dooknginy koort.

PJ Day 2023

Students were invited to wear their Pyjamas to support a great cause yesterday. This year, our fundraising efforts are directed towards the International Rescue Committee, an organisation dedicated to assisting individuals impacted by humanitarian crises.

Students, and staff, embraced the spirit of this event by donning their most comfortable and stylish PJ's and bringing a gold coin for donation.

We managed to raise the amazing amount of $379

Thank you for your ongoing support and seeing our school community come together in their best sleepwear for this meaningful cause.

KABOOM

Dear families

As we move from first semester's focus on Music: Responding into Music: Making for semester two, we have an outstanding visiting ensemble coming to motivate and inspire our learning. The cost for this incursion is $7 per student, payable via direct deposit by Tuesday July 18th - no permission slip is required for the incursion.

 School account:

BSB: 086 006

ACC: 32 124 3011

 KABOOM: Student Name

Kaboom Percussion's school workshop features newly built and never before seen instruments such as a tin can cimbalom, one of a kind angled marimbas, and portable recycled drum kits. Students and teachers alike will be captivated by how even the simplest of objects can be used to make amazing music.

Their incredible home-made instruments demonstrate multiple aspects of the science of sound production in a fun and engaging manner while also showing students how they can recycle and re-use different items to come up with their own musical creations.

The students are an integral part of this interactive performance as we use body percussion to explore the different rhythms and grooves you can use to create music. We have been practising compositions by Kaboom Percussion in class and these will form part of next semester's Making assessments in Music class. If you have any queries regarding your child's participation, please contact me at jan.ruscoe@education.wa.edu.au.

Please forward your payment of $7 by Tuesday, July 18th. Payment by direct deposit needs to have Kaboom and your child's name on the transaction. If you wish to use cash, please come and collect a school payment envelope from the office.

I look forward to sharing this performance with everyone - we have certainly been challenging ourselves and learning a lot as we prepare for it!

HOPE Heroes

Last week, Room 6 students worked hard to prepare the garden bed next to the oval steps, ready for the HOPE group to plant native trees!  The trees have been planted and the area looks fantastic. Native birds, lizards and insects are looking forward to these plants growing.  We thank Ms Algar for her continued efforts in making our school sustainable and looking tip top.

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.
