Term 2 - Week 8 (7th June, 2024)

Dear St Mary's School Community,

Focus Value: Forgiveness

We accept apologies and give others the opportunity to do the right thing and to have another chance.

New Turf in Kindy

As you can see, the newly laid turf looks magnificent and the children are enjoying the lush new, toxic free, turf. The turf was laid using a 25K Grant from the Federal Government. Our thanks go to Mrs O’Malley who did much of the work to secure the Grant back in 2023. Thank you Mrs O’Malley!!

Confirmation Mass

We wish our Confirmation candidates; Hamish Carr, Zac Crees, Greta Gethin, Wilson Mason & Patrick O'Neill, the best on Sunday as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Special thanks to Mrs McDonald and Mrs Riethmuller for preparing the children and Mass.

All are welcome to attend the on Sunday at 10.30am.

P&F Meeting

All are welcome to join us in the Library at 7pm next Monday, June 10, for our second P&F meeting of the term.

Parish Council Meeting

The Parish Council will be meeting next Tuesday, 11 June, at 7pm.

Family Friday

Next Friday all are welcome to come into St Mary’s between 8.30-9am and spend some time with your children and grandchildren. Grab a book and read it together or simply play a card game and experience a bit of quality time together.

Did you hear about the kidnapping at school?

It's okay, he woke up.

God Bless.

Mr H.

Class News

Pre Primary

In Pre-Primary this term we have been learning about measurement. We used informal measuring tools and followed the measuring rules to find the length of objects in the classroom, including the teacher. We even created our own informal measuring rulers. We explored hefting heavy and light objects like fruits and vegetables and made our own coat hanger scales.

Interschool Cross Country

Today 18 students travelled across to Bruce Rock to compete against students from 5 other schools in the Combined Schools Cross Country. Despite the threat of rain, the weather managed to hold out while our students all fought hard against some tough competition. There were some outstanding performances with an amazing 14 of our runners placing in the top 10 for their age category! St Mary’s came in 2nd on 69 points behind a very strong Narembeen team. Congratulations to all students who competed, and the following students who placed in their age category.

2024 Premier's Reading Challenge.

"The Premier’s Reading Challenge runs from the 6th of May to the 6th of September and the idea is that you try to read as many books as you can. It’s a competition right across the state and there’s some great prizes – including a Nintendo Switch. So, everyone get on board with the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2024. Get to your books!"

Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia

About the challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program established in 2022 to:

  • encourage students to read more books
  • enjoy reading
  • improve literacy levels.

The mission is for students in kindergarten to Year 10 to read 12 books over 4 months from 6 May to 6 September. That’s right—just 12, students can read:

  • books
  • short stories
  • graphic novels
  • eBooks
  • talking books
  • audiobooks
  • poems
  • anything that sparks their interest and gets them reading.

Whether they’re a curious kindergartener or a high-schooler, there is something of interest for readers at any and every level.

Adventures await. Books take us to places we only dream about and even further. Where else can we experience a mutiny on a pirate ship or jump on a time-traveling bicycle.

Students will expand their vocabulary, learn new facts, and impress their friends with fancy new words that they have learned.

At the end of the challenge, students who complete it will receive a special certificate signed by the Premier. They can hang it proudly on their bedroom wall; it’s like winning a gold medal in reading!

Get your students ready to explore, grab their reading lights and bookmarks and set sail on their next reading adventure.

The next great story is only one page turn away.

Benefits of the challenge

The challenge will:

  • raise the profile of reading and literacy in schools
  • give students a focus for their reading
  • encourage students to enjoy reading and read more books
  • encourage students to participate by being challenged
  • offer incentives and prizes for readers
  • build self-esteem, pride, school unity and a sense of achievement among students
  • increase the involvement of parents in their child’s reading
  • increase the number of library books borrowed
  • contribute to increased literacy levels.
