Important Diary Dates

From the Principal

We have reached the end of what was a very busy term and I am very pleased with the achievements and progress made so far this term. Outside, our new Junior Primary play area is being well utilised and has made that side of the school a brighter place to be. Our Working Bee added to this and I thank all of the parents and students who came along to participate, as well as the teachers for their efforts.

Inside, all classes have settled into their learning and are working through many aspects of the curriculum. Our literacy and numeracy programs are up and running with intervention for targeted students. We have completed our literacy and numeracy testing, including Naplan, and Kirsty and Mandy have undertaken the new SA Year 1 Numeracy Check with very satisfying results.

Already we have had some exciting co-curricular activities. There has been district athletics, cricket and 9-a-side football, a 5/6 excursion focussed on ‘Being a Barossan’ and the choir is in full-swing (or full-sing 😉!).

We have already started planning for the myriad of other activities that will take place next term – but first let’s have a holiday! Please take the time to enjoy some lovely family time before returning on 27th April.

A few things for next term:

 Pupil Free Day

Please note that our Pupil Free Day has changed Friday 8th May to Monday 11th May as some important Child Protection Curriculum training is available on the 11th that the majority of staff must complete. Hopefully this does not cause any inconvenience.

Uniform

  • Hats

Next term, being a winter term, there is no requirement for students to wear hats. Of course, sun-smart policy would suggest that year-round wearing of hats is not a bad idea, so students are welcome to wear hats and on particularly warm/sunny days it is encouraged.

  • Shorts

Our uniform policy states:

·         Shorts that do not reach mid-thigh should not be worn (unless worn under a dress for that purpose).

We have had many students in shorts that do not comply and are wearing shorts that are exceptionally short. We ask that you please address this if your child is continuing to wear short pants / under-dress shorts. They must be of the length as per our policy above.

 Gum

There has been a recent increase in the number of students, particularly in the Upper Primary, chewing gum. Please be aware that we are a no - gum site : students are not to chew gum either in class or in the yard. We ask that you do not purchase gum for your children that can be taken to school and or support us in discouraging them from bringing gum to school.

Working Bee Success! New Gardens & More

A huge thank you to all the families and staff who joined us for our recent Working Bee. Your hard work and community spirit have made a real difference at Nuriootpa Primary School!

During the day, we created vibrant new gardens that will be enjoyed by students for years to come. The cubby house received a fresh coat of protective oil, ensuring it remains a favourite play spot for many more adventures. Our front garden areas were cleared out and are now ready for the installation of a new irrigation system, which will help keep our grounds looking their best all year round.

We’re also excited to announce the planting of a range of native plants. These will not only beautify our school but also attract and support local native wildlife. Thank you again to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and helped make this transformation possible. Your efforts help create a welcoming and sustainable environment for our students to learn and play.

Wellbeing at NPS

Supporting Children Through Friendship Challenges

Friendship challenges are a normal part of growing up, and they are something all children experience at different times throughout their school years. While it can be difficult for children — and sometimes worrying for parents — these moments are important opportunities for learning and growth.

At school, we work closely with students to help them build the skills they need to develop healthy friendships, including communication, empathy, problem-solving and resilience. Small disagreements, changing friendship groups and misunderstandings are all part of children learning how to navigate relationships and understand others.

Families can provide wonderful support by listening calmly, reassuring children that friendship problems do happen, and helping them think about positive ways to respond. Encouraging children to use kind words, include others, and seek support from a trusted adult can make a big difference. It is also helpful to remind them that friendships often change as children grow, and that difficult moments do not mean they will always feel this way.

Most importantly, children feel safest and most supported when home and school work together. If your child is having ongoing friendship worries, please reach out to their classroom teacher, Fiona our Wellbeing SSO or myself, so we can support them together and help them feel happy, connected and confident at school.

Wishing all of our families a safe, happy and restful break. We look forward to seeing everyone next term refreshed and ready for more learning!

What's Happening at NPS

Upper Primary - 'Being a Barossan' excursion

Being a Barossan

On our “Being a Barossan” excursion, we first visited Schulz Wines, where we learned about the importance of grapevines to the Barossa. We got to walk through the vineyard, look at vines, taste grapes and even look at a machine harvester up close. We also had a taste of Rote Grutze. At the Barossa Cellar, we explored how wine is stored and the importance of the Barossa marketing. We also had the oppportunity to walk through the cellar and taste grapes from the Barossa Cellar vineyard.  Our next stop, Menglers Hill, offered breathtaking views across the Barossa, giving us a sense of place and community—a key part of what it means to be a Barossan.

Back at school, Sally Pfeiffer visited us and spoke about her experiences living in the Barossa and what makes the region unique. She discussed how the culture, history, and environment shape Barossans and create a strong sense of identity.

Soon, we will be using our knowledge to write an information report, sharing what we learned about the Barossa, its people, and the winemaking process.
