Burton Primary School Newsletter

Term 3, Week 3, 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

It has been a busy but exciting start to the term, with many of our students taking part in a range of extra curricula activities.

Participation in extra-curricular activities is linked to positive academic outcomes, such as students’ grades and educational aspirations, improved attendance and positive social behaviours.

So far, we have seen students attend athletics and boys AFL SAPSASA, along with the Aboriginal Learners STEM conference. More information about our student’s experiences of these events can be found in this edition of the newsletter.

At Burton, our students also have the opportunity to take part in a range of student voice groups. Currently, students with in these groups are reviewing our school values and developing student knowledge on our new waste management system.

Please look out in following newsletters for more information regarding both of these areas.

I would like to thank all families who attended our Assembly on Friday afternoon, we had a great turn out.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Chharida Mann to Burton Primary School, she joins our year 2 team and will be taking room 8 for the remainder of the year.

We trust you have a great week.

Kind Regards,

Maria Appelt

Cleanaway Rubbish Collection

When you drop your child off at school you may start noticing the new bins popping up in the yard and your children might be talking about the new recycling bins in the classrooms.

The Department for Education has entered into a initiative with Cleanaway. This contract has seen a variety of bins delivered to schools, much like the ones you see in shopping centres.

These are designed to encourage a greater amount of recycling to increase our sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint. Waste that was originally collected and taken to landfill will now be redirected to being processed into an alternative fuel source.

Please talk to your children about this and help us support the use of these bins.

Parent Survey 2023

ThinkUknow cyber safety and security presentation

A child minding service will now be available for families.  You will need to sign your child/ren in with staff members before attending the presentation.  They will also need to be signed out at the end of the session.

Dear Parents/Caregivers

The internet is a great way to socialise, learn, work, play and be entertained — but with technology comes risks. Do you know how to keep your child safe online?

Families can sometimes find it hard to guide their children in using social media technologies safely. To support families at Burton we have organised community police officers from the Northern District Community Engagement Section to attend our school on the 15th of August from 6:00-7:30pm. The presentation will be held in the Hive and we invite all parents/caregivers to attend.

The presentation will focus on:

  • cyber safety, what to be aware of and how you can support your children to use online platforms safely,

  • processes to report inappropriate internet usage,

  • tools to gain a better understanding of the risks but also the positives of internet use.

If you are seeking further information on cybersafety we recommend you access the Think U Know website which is designed and available to support educators and parents in providing guidance and information on the safe and appropriate use of social media, online gaming and the internet. The website provides fact sheets and information packages which are also available on the website in a range of languages.

STEM Conference - Friday August 11th

This is Mitchell. He went to school at Salisbury High School and he is an engineer at the Waite Campus for Adelaide University. He told us about his STEM year 10 journey, and how it got him a job at the university.  He empowered us to take STEM lessons in high school. I am excited about my journey. I want to get into engineering too.      Mia Freeman

We built rockets out of paper. It was based on trajectory and you had to try and get it to launch up to the roof.  We launched it and tried to get it to hit the air-conditioning. We were pretty successful. One of ours hit the roof and got stuck. It will be there forever. It was fun to see how you had to add wings to make it go faster and higher.  Callum Norris-Wayland

It was a great learning experience. I did not know there was a seedbank or that seeds become endangered. We put on 3D glasses to watch how caterpillars and ants work together.   Lola Miller.

It was really fun. We got to make rockets. We got to shoot them up to the ceiling.  Mine and Callum’s got stuck above the speaker up on the ceiling. We put the rocket on the launcher and stomped on the airbag and it shot up. The best part was shooting it up. We had lots of fun.       Josh Roebuck-Parkes.

The rocket was easy to understand at first but when I did it, it was very tricky. At the end it was fun.  I nearly got a bullseye when I aimed the rocket at the target. It was so much fun.

Mia Freeman

It was interesting to see what the seeds looked like under the microscope.

We saw seeds under an x-ray. Some of them had caterpillars in them. Another one had a fully developed wasp in it. It was cool how the wasp put the eggs in the caterpillar so the wasp could eat the caterpillar from the inside out.    Callum Norris-Wayland

We got to hang out  at the STEM conference. I enjoy the challenge of STEM and can’t wait for high school. We all ended up friends in the end.   .Mia Freeman

At the end of the day it was real fun but we were sad to leave.  Josh Roebuck-Parkes.

Mia and I become good friends. We don’t usually hang out together. The best part was that you got to hang out with other Aboriginal students.   Lola Miller.

Camp Quality puppet show - Monday August 28th

Hello Families,

Camp Quality Puppet Show are visiting Burton Primary School on Monday the 28th of August in our Gymnasium. There will be 2 puppet shows performed on the day. A junior primary show at 11am and a primary show at 11.45am. Both shows are age-appropriate and developed to raise awareness of Cancer.

Camp Quality’s cancer education program has been teaching kids about cancer with a fun and interactive puppet performance, for over 33 years. The program focuses on telling the broader cancer story, including how to support someone who is facing their own cancer diagnosis or that of a loved one. For more information visit https://www.campquality.org.au/how-we-help/puppet-programs/

The performance is of no cost to families and is purely for entertainment and cancer awareness. A small fundraiser box will be placed in the front office leading up to the day of the puppet show. This will be for donations towards Camp Quality to help change the cancer story for kids and families dealing with cancer.

If you do not wish for your child to attend the performance, please call the office by Friday the 25th of August.
