Message from the Principal

A Culture of Strong Teaching, Learning and Inclusive Education

At Lae International School, high‑quality teaching and learning are at the centre of everything we do. Our teachers work collaboratively to design engaging and meaningful learning experiences that support student progress and achievement. There is a strong focus on knowing our learners well, setting clear expectations, and supporting every student to experience success. We are proud of the work of our Inclusive Education Committee, which plays a vital role in supporting students with diverse learning needs. The committee oversees planning and monitoring to ensure students are supported to achieve agreed learning targets. Just as importantly, the committee also coordinates opportunities to extend and challenge students who are identified as gifted, ensuring they remain engaged and motivated in their learning journey. Parents and carers who would like to learn more about the Inclusive Education Committee, or who wish to discuss their own child’s learning and support needs, are encouraged to make an appointment with the relevant Head of Curriculum (HOC) or Deputy Principal.

Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers

Open and effective communication is essential to student success, and we value our strong partnerships with parents and carers. Our school has an open‑door policy, and families are encouraged to connect with us regularly. Parents and carers are welcome to approach teachers before or after school, or to make an appointment to discuss their child’s progress at a mutually convenient time. Appointments to meet with the Principal, Deputy, or HOC can be made through our friendly office staff, who are always happy to assist.

Board of Governors Meeting

Please note that the School Board of Governors will be meeting next Wednesday 6th May at the Primary Campus, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm.

Success Starts Here!

Deputy Principal's Notices

Our school continues to be a hive of activity as we move confidently through this busy eight‑week term. It has been pleasing to see high‑quality learning taking place across classrooms, alongside a range of enriching opportunities for students. From chess sessions being enjoyed during break times to a wide variety of extracurricular activities offered after school, students are certainly making the most of all that is available to them.

This morning, our Primary School community enjoyed a beautiful Mother’s Day Assembly, celebrating mothers and the many women who hold significant value in our students’ lives. It was a thoughtful and inclusive occasion that reflected the care and respect we value as a community. This afternoon, the High School will also pay their respects, with our Senior Student Leaders organising what promises to be a touching and meaningful tribute.

I would also like to commend the student leaders who represented our school at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service last weekend at the Lae War Cemetery. They conducted themselves with great dignity, and it was heartening to receive positive feedback from community members who commented on their respectful behaviour and strong sense of responsibility.

Looking ahead, we are excited for our Sports Carnivals taking place next week. These events are always filled with house spirit, enthusiasm, and friendly competition. Parents and guardians are warmly invited to attend, cheer on our students, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support of our school community.

Warm regards,

Mr Stephen Sowter

Under 19 Rugby League Match Report

Last week, the LIS Under 19 Rugby League team took the field against AOG Christian Academy in an exciting opening match of the season. It was a hard‑fought contest from start to finish, marked by strong running from both sides and gritty, hard‑hitting defence throughout the game.

We are extremely proud of our boys, who showed resilience and determination to secure an 8–4 victory in a match that went down to the wire. With the siren sounding, AOG’s halfback placed a sensational attacking kick into our in‑goal area, creating a tense final moment. However, Benjamin Dugubun, our flying winger, rose above his opposition to safely claim the ball and seal a thrilling victory for the team.

The match was played in excellent spirit by both teams, and we would like to acknowledge AOG Christian Academy for their sportsmanship and competitive attitude. They are a strong and well‑coached side, and we look forward to facing them again later in the season, potentially in the finals.

While every player displayed grit and commitment and never took a step backwards, several performances deserve special mention. Simon Morea was outstanding in defence, shutting down AOG’s attacking formations through his work in the middle of the field. Ryan Alina’s strong running game laid the platform early, giving the team momentum and confidence. Our Man of the Match, Egave Eka, was exceptional at lock; his work rate was unmatched as he covered the field tirelessly and led by example.

We now look ahead to our next match tomorrow against Bugandi, which promises to be a physical encounter. The boys have prepared well throughout the week and are ready for the challenge.

Kick‑off: 2:30pm Venue: Lae Secondary School

We invite all supporters to come along and cheer our boys on as they continue their season.
