Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 11 August 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

You may recall being invited recently to share your thoughts regarding the Mission and Values of Crafers Primary School. I would like to sincerely thank those of you who responded. This information was shared with Governing Council this week and can now be shared with everyone. From the list of six possibilities provided the top three responses included:

  • Education and Learning
  • Knowledge and Understanding
  • Community

As a Leader I feel these responses truly reflect our purpose and the manner in which we go about making this come alive. Community has been such a strong element in my time at Crafers (and no doubt long before this) to the point of being  truly unique. The investment from our community makes many opportunities possible for the children and truly enhances our other 2 responses. The written responses included showed themes of respect, well-being and inclusivity. This is the first step in our preparation, and I want to acknowledge how broad these headings are. We are hoping to dig a little deeper (as the written responses have done) and in doing this would like to invite any interested members of the community to workshop these ideas with me at school. Please keep your eye out for an invitation, we will hold one workshop during school hours and one outside in the hope this may make it more accessible to a greater number of families. We will also hold mini workshops with students and staff to ensure all voices are heard.

On the topic of hearing all voices, you should have received an invitation to participate in this year's parent survey. This is distributed centrally by the Department for Education, and I am encouraging as many people to participate as possible. (Pleasingly we have had about 20 responses already.)  The more information we have, both positive and constructive, the more informed we are, and we are able to make better decisions. At times, we can receive conflicting feedback, especially in the area of communication where some families would like more and others less. In these situations, we simply do our best! I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time and investing in our school once again.

Kind regards
Chan

Jump Rope for Heart Update

Students at Crafers Primary School are off to a fantastic start in the Jump Rope for Heart program. We have raised $948 and logged 14 hours of skipping. It is never too late to join the fun and create your very own secure JRFH webpage by signing up online at www.jumprope.org.au/parents. You and your child can:

  • Easily raise funds.
  • Track skipping progress and earn virtual badges along the way.
  • Post updates to your page so family and friends can follow their progress.
  • Access additional skipping resources.

This week our first skipping challenge is “The Side-swing Criss Cross”. Share the video with your children and let’s see who can master the trick - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01IBoSgP0L0

An update from Ebony

Over the past week, I’m sure many of you have heard that Jump Rope for Heart is happening at Crafers Primary School. Many children have been excitedly practising their skills and learning new ones.

However, as with all new skills, many of our children are being faced with the reminder that they can’t suddenly know how to perform a new skill and that it requires practice. As I’ve joined classes for skipping time and wandered around at lunch time, I have had many conversations with children about learning how to skip.

Before the session with the Coromandel Primary Jump Rope for Heart team, I heard many children say things like, ‘I can’t skip. I’ve never been able to before. I can only do 1 skip.’ and then after the session and an opportunity to give it a go, many changed their ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’.

This simple program and opportunity to practise a new skill has challenged many of our children to engage with their growth mindset.

A growth mindset:

  • Uses the power of ‘yet’
  • Believes their intelligence and skill set can grow
  • Welcomes feedback
  • Looks for ways around challenges and setbacks
  • Feels inspired by others’ success
  • Asks lots of questions

Next time you hear your child stuck in a fixed mindset, challenge them to reframe their thought to:

I’m not good at ______________ YET,
but if I ______________, I might be able to achieve it.

I’ve even managed to challenge my own fixed mindset around skipping from ‘I can’t any more’ to ‘perhaps I just need to practice’.

Pedal Prix 8 Hour Race @ The Bend

On the 5th of August, the Crafers Pedal Prix team ventured out to Tailem Bend to race in the 8 Hour Race. After everybody arrived and eventually properly woke up from the early start, we huddled up in our pits and talked about the race, running through the rules and thanking all the parents (Thank you!). The track was longer than the race earlier this year by 1-1.5 km. The new track was 3.4 km long, and that left everyone bustling with excitement and worries.

The race began, cars whooshed all around the track, with Ethan in the Comet, Levi in the Edge, and Emily in the Snappin Pappin. Everyone was jumping with joy and obsessing over our success from the previous races. After numerous pit stops, we found out that the Comet was in fourth place with a decent start! We worked hard, watching the cars eagerly from different points of the track, and cheered so loud that it made the other visitors know who we truly are.

The race came to a close just as it was getting dark, with Hayden finishing off in the Comet, Jasper in the Snappin Pappin, and Sienna in the Edge. The cars came through the pit stop one after another. Of course, we did our signature move and formed a wonky and excited tunnel with our arms. As the cars came through, we banged and battered the car, cheering our heads off. Everyone was so excited that we managed to push through and finish off 3rd, 6th, and 9th!

Everyone really gave it their best efforts as our racing season has come to a close. We all gave it our all out on the track, cheering and just being good sports overall. Well done, Crafers, for ending another race with a bang!

Art in Room 5

In Art this term we have been exploring famous artists. We have recreated Wassily Kandinsky's concentric circles and geometric shapes. We then moved on to Pablo Picasso's cubism. We also plan to look at Hans Heysen.

We have explored using mediums such as water colours, crayons and black pens with textas.

We are enjoying discovering new artists and styles. Feel free to visit our artwork displays outside of Room 5.
