ZIG ZAG Public School

There are so many wonderful things happening across our school at the moment, and I have been reflecting on what makes our school such a special place to be. From classrooms to playgrounds, there is a real sense of energy, creativity and connection as our students learn, participate and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

Book Week was a fantastic celebration of reading and imagination. It was wonderful to see so many families and friends join us for our annual Book Parade, and to see our students proudly sharing their costumes and creativity. The Book Fair was also a great success, with families purchasing books and items, while students worked incredibly hard on a range of impressive projects. A huge thank you to Mrs Hookham for putting together such an amazing event and creating so many opportunities for our students to celebrate their love of books.

We have also announced our whole-school excursion to Western Sydney Zoo, and there is already plenty of excitement building! We are looking forward to this shared experience and the opportunity for all of our students to enjoy a memorable and educational experience together as we approach the end of the term.

Our lunchtimes have been just as busy. With the warmer weather arriving, the Gardening Club is in full swing, with students getting their hands dirty and making the most of our garden spaces. Mrs Doran continues to bring the performing arts to life, with students moving from dance into choir. We also have students engaged in Minecraft, SRC activities and a range of other opportunities to connect, create and develop their interests.

The Waste 2 Art Regional Showcase in Broken Hill has been finalised with the judges deliberating over 131 incredible artworks. Amongst those outstanding pieces was our artwork, Riding the wave; Shrinking your footprint. Zig Zag Public School has been awarded The Best work made from a Shoe Box Award. This means we have won $200 in prize money, what an achievement. 

You may also have noticed some changes to our front entrance. Our old front doors have been transformed so that parents and visitors can now take a direct route from the path through to the school office. This project was funded through Departmental infrastructure funding, with care taken to respect and retain the history of the original doors. It is a wonderful example of improving our facilities while maintaining the character and history of our school.

Our children's mural and QR codes have also now been installed. The QR codes feature recordings of our students' voices saying words in Wiradjuri, providing a wonderful opportunity for our school community to hear and engage with language through the voices of our own students. It is a special addition to our school and a reflection of the importance we place on culture, connection and student voice.

And finally, our Breakfast Club continues to be a huge hit! Approximately 70 students are accessing breakfast or second breakfast each day, making it a wonderful opportunity for students to start their day feeling connected, supported and ready to learn.

When I look across all of these activities, what stands out most is the richness of school life beyond the classroom. Whether students are reading, gardening, singing, creating, learning language, developing leadership skills, sharing experiences with their families or simply enjoying time together, these are the experiences that help make our school community such a wonderful place to belong.

There is a lot to celebrate, and I am incredibly proud of the students, staff and families who continue to make our school such a vibrant and connected community.

A huge congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s District Athletics Carnival! Your dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship made the event a fantastic and memorable day for everyone. We couldn’t be prouder of the effort shown both on and off the field.

A special shoutout goes to Lucy Thompson, Makayla Paul, Tanner Dean, and Grace Andersson and Harrison Kearney, who will now represent our district at the upcoming Western Trials. Their outstanding achievements and commitment to athletics have earned them this exciting opportunity.

We would also like to congratulate Tanner Dean and Grace Andersson for being awarded Champion and Runner-Up respectively at the district carnival. Their exceptional performances have truly set a high standard for our school.

We wish Lucy, Makayla, Tanner, Grace and Harrison the very best of luck as they prepare for the next stage. Go out there and make our district proud!

Well done again to all our athletes—you are all champions!

K/1 has been engaging in PE lessons, learning about fair play through games while working hard to master the side gallop.

In Mathematics, students have been using manipulatives and stories to learn about fair sharing quantities and develop their understanding of equality.

There has also been great excitement in Science, where the class has been learning about animal structures and collecting and retrieving data using a digital device. They proudly declared, ‘We feel like real scientists!’

Art has been a real highlight this term, with K/1 learning about portraits and primary colours. They enjoyed creating continuous-line portraits and then painting them using primary colours.

1/2 Waterworks have been busy learning about tone in Visual Arts over the past two weeks. We have explored mixing and painting with colours to create different tints and shades. We are consolidating our new Visual Arts vocabulary and concepts through sentence syntax lessons, using our Art knowledge to explore different sentence types.

We braved the chilly weather in Week 5 to practise our underarm and overarm throwing skills! We focused on using the right speed and height to make our throws controlled and accurate.

In Science this term, Stage 2 are learning about landscapes and landforms. This week we closely examined different types of rock using magnifying lenses.

Students spent time making close observations and noting the differing textures and colours.          

Everyday we read with our fluency partners!

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to practise their reading aloud, build confidence and develop their fluency.

By reading together and supporting one another, we are working towards becoming smooth, expressive and fluent readers.

We love seeing our students encourage and celebrate each other as they grow their reading skills!

Year 5/6 students have been developing their ideas and perspectives through art making. They used their fingers to create a frame, zooming in on a photograph of something around the school. From this close-up view, they created their own unique snapshot, encouraging them to look at familiar surroundings from a different perspective.

What a wonderful Book Week!

A huge thank you to our students and families for helping make Book Week such a special celebration at Zig Zag Public School!

It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm - from the fantastic costumes at our Book Week Parade, to the creative Book Week projects and displays, and all the excitement of the Book Fair.

A special thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fair. Every purchase helps our school earn rewards to put towards new books and resources for our library, so your support helps us continue to grow our collection for all students to enjoy. Thank you also to our families for encouraging a love of books and reading at home.

Premier’s Reading Challenge - nearly there!

The finish line is in sight! The 2026 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge closes Friday 18 September, so there is still time for primary students to complete their reading and make sure their books are recorded.

If your Year 3-Year 6 child is participating, now is a great time to check their progress and encourage them to finish off those final few books!

Remember, the Challenge isn’t about racing or competing - it’s about encouraging students to read more, read widely and discover books they love.

We can’t wait to celebrate all of our 2026 PRC finishers! Congratulations to those who have already completed the challenge. 

Garden Club has been buzzing with activity!

Students have been busy weeding and preparing a new garden bed for three rosemary plants, while also maintaining the veggie beds and planting native plants along the fence line.

They have been especially keen to care for our new citrus trees and have enjoyed putting the new garden trolley to good use.  

Over the last two weeks, the SRC have been working on posters with important messaging about Bullying No Way week.

Keep an eye out for their posters that are displayed around the school. 

Our pie drive was very successful again. Thank you to everyone that supported our fundraiser. Enjoy your pies.

Fathers day stall Thursday 3rd September. $5 gift. Bring money in on the day.

Fathers Day Breakfast Friday 4th September. Money and orders can come to the office or by scanning the QR code on the order form.
