We have almost hit the half-way mark of the term, where students continue to do amazing things inside and out of the classroom, achieving many personal goals. I would like to give a big shout out to all parents, carers and friends for your continued support, making our school the great school it is!
Education Week 2023 – ‘Celebrating 175 Years of Education – Learning, Celebrating, Embracing.
Last week we celebrated 175 years of Public Education. Public Education provides equitable access to quality education for all students, promoting a diverse and inclusive learning environment and I am so proud of the Wattle Grove way, where all students have a place, individuality is celebrated and opportunities provided for all students to thrive and succeed, laying the foundations for individual success in the classroom and beyond.
We started the week with Pyjama Day, where we encouraged a love of reading for enjoyment. Students got to wear their PJs and share their favourite books with peers. It was lovely seeing the students warm and cosy, whilst engaging in reading for enjoyment.
Tuesday, we welcomed families and friends to celebrate the great work happening in classrooms and beyond. It was heartwarming to see so many families visiting classrooms and talking with the children about their learning. Following the Open Classrooms, we were treated to an array of performances as part of our Education Week Assembly. Abby and Oliver, our School Captains, did an amazing job leading the assembly. Our Kindergarten Dance group were just so cute dancing to a medley of songs, bringing a smile to all our faces. Our Dance Ensemble Group displayed such skill when performing their amazing dance, which they also performed at the ‘In the Spotlight Festival’ last term. Kai presented a thought-provoking speech on facing our fears, with fabulous tips for us all. Our choir was so graceful in their performance and Mr Red and Danny, bought a tear to my eye, singing ‘Yellow.’ I was so proud watching all our students celebrate and embrace the spirit of Public Education. Thank you to Mrs Valensise for organising our assembly and all the staff involved with the performances and organisation.
Wednesday saw our Kindergarten students celebrate 100 days of learning at Wattle Grove. The children came dressed up as if they were 100 years old and engaged in an array of special activities over the day. Thank you to our amazing Kindergarten team for making this day such a great day for the children.
On Thursday our 3-6 Aboriginal students went on country with Mrs Robinson, Mrs Solo and Mr Hall, from the Georges River Environment Education Centre. The students spent the morning exploring the Sandy Point Trail learning how the traditional owners used the river and plants in this area. They gathered stones from the trail to make their own ochre which they used to paint. They also saw a scar tree and koala markings. The students had an amazing morning of learning. Thank you, Mrs Robinson, for organising such an amazing day.
On Friday we announced the class winner of our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) poster competition. The children did a fabulous job, creating posters to acknowledge our school expectations. The names and posters of the winners are presented further on in the newsletter. Each class winner received a stationery gift. Thank you, Mr Wilson and Mrs Hankin!
Education Week was truly a week of celebrating the great things happening at Wattle Grove, an awesome Public School! Thank you to all staff and families.
Camping Adventures
This week, Year 5 headed off to Kincumber Aussie Bush Camp for three action packed days. The students participated in a range of activities focussing on not only physical fitness but working collaboratively with team members. Camp is such a character building experience and our students did an amazing job. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Cabrera for organising this wonderful opportunity for Year 5 as well as attending the camp, and Mrs Dodd, Mrs Farah, Miss Standen and Miss Cascio for also attending the camp. Staff attending the camp give up their own personal time to make this happen, and I would like to thank them for doing this for our children.
Staffing
We welcome Miss McAlpine to Wattle Grove. Miss McAlpine will be teaching 2 Olive, Wednesdays to Fridays, and will be teaching various classes Monday and Tuesday. She is very excited to be part of the Wattle Grove family and I am sure you will all make her feel welcome.
