Principal's Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to our Week 6 Newsletter.

UNIFORM:

As we head into the colder part of the year, can I remind all parents/carers that students need to be in school uniform. If you are unable to purchase a school jacket/jumper, through the Uniform Shop, please ensure that the jacket/jumper your child is wearing is black. Please refer to our school website for more details around school uniform.

If anyone is having trouble obtaining a black jacket/jumper, please let the school know. I don’t want anyone being cold throughout the day!

STUDENT COUNCIL MOVIE AFTERNOON:

Our student council movie afternoon was a huge success. Our students had a fantastic time.

Thank you to the student Council and Mr Deady for organising. Thank you to all the staff and parents who helped out with food and supervision. I love how our school community pulls together to make these types of events special and successful!

We are constantly trying to find ways to cater for all of our students’ interests. Our Drawing Club kicked of last Thursday during 2nd Break and was a smash hit! A big thanks to Kim Prior for running this club each Thursday 2nd Break. Please talk to your children about this and if they are interested in attending the Drawing Club, they can simply let their classroom teacher know.

NATIONAL SORRY DAY:

Today is National Sorry Day. National Sorry Day, or the National Day of Healing, is an annual event that has been held in Australia on 26 May since 1998. The event remembers and commemorates the mistreatment of the country's Indigenous peoples as part of an ongoing process of reconciliation between the Indigenous peoples of Australia and the settler population.

This week, our teachers have been talking to their classes about the significance and meaning of this day.

Have a great weekend!

HODC Report

REPORTING:

Teachers are beginning the preparation of Semester one report cards. At Beerwah State School we use a learning statement approach. This means that for each learning area there will be a statement outlining what has been assessed in the semester. They are written using the Australian Curriculum achievement standards. These learning statements are an overview, they are only bespoke if there are specific plans in place for your child.

For children in Years 1-6, all learning areas will be graded on a A-E scale. In Prep there is a similar scale that uses descriptions (applying-becoming aware).

The following provides a brief explanation of what each overall judgement (grade) means:

C – on balance, the student demonstrated the Australian Curriculum elements in the learning statement

B – on balance, the student demonstrated the Australian Curriculum elements in different contexts and/or at higher complexity

A - on balance, the student demonstrated the Australian Curriculum elements in different contexts and at higher complexity

D - on balance, the student demonstrated some of the Australian Curriculum elements in the learning statement.

E – on balance, the student required support to demonstrate few Australian Curriculum elements in the learning statement.

INCURSIONS:

We will be having two incursions in early Term three. These are both related to our teaching of Health, they are ‘Healthy Harold’ and ‘Talk About It’. Both of these programs are run by Life Education, who provide a curriculum aligned health programs in over 800 schools and early education centres across Queensland.

HEALTHY HAROLD:

All classes from Prep to Year 6 will participate in the Healthy Harold program. Modules are selected for each year level so they are age-appropriate and relate to the units of work being taught in our Health classes. Some examples of topics include - Nutrition, healthy eating and the importance of physical activity; Personal safety; Respectful relationships and emotional well-being; Cybersafety and strategies to combat cyber-bullying

There will be a permission note sent home on Friday 16 June with details of the specific module that each class will be completing.

TALK ABOUT IT:

Talk About It is a program for students in Years 5 and 6. It is designed to help support students explore the concept of identity, develop safe and respectful relationships, and understand and manage the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. The program is delivered by experienced educators from Life Education.

Year 5 participate in two modules of the program and Year participate in three modules.

There will be a permission note sent home Friday 16 June with details of the specific module that each class will be completing. There will also be an opportunity for parents to join in an information session with an educator from Life Education to find out more about the program and ask any questions.

Both of these incursions will be subsidised with funds provided to the school through P&C. Final costs for parents will be provided with the consent form.

How you will receive the reminder notice:

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.  QKR! How to Guide
QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

Other Reports

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

School Community

P&C Report

P&C MEETINGS

We held our general meeting last week on May 17. It was great to see members joining us and participating in discussions on how we can best support our school community. We had Jason Hunt MP (our local State Parliament Member) join us for our meeting. Jason generously donated new kitchen utensils for the tuckshop. Thank you Jason!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 21 June at 6:00pm in the school library. We always welcome new members to join. Fresh ideas and ways of working are always welcome.

VOLUNTEERING

We always welcome new volunteers to assist with the various events and tasks that make our P & C function. If you are able to contribute some of your time - even just half an hour would be greatly appreciated.

A few of our ongoing tasks that require volunteers are:

Tuckshop - food preparation, packing of orders, baking/cooking items Uniform Shop - assisting families with making purchases, stock control Book Club - collection of orders, packing & distribution of orders Mother’s & Father’s Day Stalls - set-up, pack-down, serving students If you want to find out more about how you can volunteer, please email p&c@beerwahss.eq.edu.au or connect through our Facebook page.

Did you know:

VOLUNTEERING HELPS CREATE COMMUNITY

I know it sounds cliché, but raising children takes a village. Volunteering at school is a great way to connect with other parents and create a circle of adult friends. Over time, these friends grow to know and love your children. Never underestimate the power of community in raising children.

Don’t forget: the P&C Association is an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends; they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

FACEBOOK PAGE

Facebook is our main form of contact so please follow us and keep an eye out for updates. If you see one of our updates – for example our next pancake morning notice, please share with your friends. The more people who attend, the more funds we raise, and the more we can buy for your children to use at school. Everyone’s a winner!!! We’ll also update you on the Tuckshop or Uniform shop, it’s the easiest form of contact so please keep following. Just find our page and like us to start following. BSS P&C Facebook page.

EVENTS & FUNDRAISING

Congratulations to all the Mother's Day raffle winners. A big thank you also to all the local businesses who donated prizes to support our school’s P & C.

Our book fair is fast approaching. It will be held on Tuesday 30 May, Wednesday 31 May, and Thursday 1 June. Students will have the opportunity to make their ‘wish lists’ in their library times the week prior. We will require parent/carer volunteers to assist on the sales of books. Volunteers are needed in the following time: Tuesday 30 May: 8:15 am - 9:00 am and 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm Wednesday 31 May: 8:15 am - 9:00 am and 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm Thursday 1 June: 8:15 am - 9:00 am If you can assist please contact the P & C: p&c@beerwahss.eq.edu.au or reach out on Facebook.

Term 2’s working bee was held on Saturday May 20. Thank you to all the volunteers who attended and helped improve our school grounds. Watch this space for next term's working bee details. Extra hands are always welcome. It is a great way to meet new people and build our community spirit here at Beerwah State School.

BOOK CLUB

The best way to order for the book club is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office. The due date for orders is always stamped on the front of the brochure so don’t miss out! An extra bonus is that the school receives 15% of all order values to purchase books for our library. Books are such a wonderful addition to any child’s life and there are some amazing prices in the book club.

TUCKSHOP

Our Burger Meal Deal was a HUGE hit with many students!

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who prepared delicious, healthy meals for our super star students. Check out the tuckshop schedule for the remainder of term 2 below. Tuckshop is open Fridays, first break only. Orders are preferred via Qkr! which will be made available one week before. Before ordering, please double check your child’s profile & class as we had some orders going to the wrong class. We will be trialing cash orders between week 3 and week 10 this term. All orders being made by cash need to be submitted by Thursday. Correct money only as no change will be able to be given. Please ensure your child's money is secure in an envelope with their order, name and class clearly labeled on the envelope. No late cash orders will be accepted. Keep an eye on our P & C Facebook page for some photo’s of our delicious menu items.

This term we are fortunate enough to have Dietetics students from the University of Sunshine Coast support the tuckshop and Kitchen Garden program. We are hoping to support the knowledge and skills around growing and cooking healthy food items. Students will have the opportunity to discuss additional menu items with the Dietetics students.

Qkr! is the preferred method for tuckshop ordering. These orders will need to be completed via Qkr! prior to 7:30 am on the day of opening. Please DO NOT send your child with cash. We are unable to serve and collect cash over the counter on the day of ordering. . If you require support to set up a Qkr! Account, please contact the P & C via email or Facebook and we will happily support you to complete this. We would love to open before school to offer a breakfast service, but this is dependent on volunteers, so if you are available to assist on a regular basis, please get in touch. p&c@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Kandoo Joeys' Playgroup

MESSY PLAY MAY:

Messy Play May was a huge success with lots of squashy, slimy, squishy, goopy sensory play. The weather held out for our Under 8’s day making it possible to take our Messy Play to our Outdoor Classroom where the children had access to the perfect ingredients to make Gruffalo tea and participate in a scavenger hunt. We have two more weeks of messy play where children can develop their fine and gross motor skills as they pick up objects and allow textures and materials to be moulded and flow through their hands and fingers.

JUNE MUSIC MONTH:

Next month is music month at Kandoo Joeys Playgroup. When children listen to music it plays a role in their development, when a child plays music, it ignites all areas of their development and sets them up for life with infinite skills. In the early years, musical experiences encourage the development of language development, speech perception, and sound processing. Children build their gross motor skills and self-expression when they dance to music.

Kandoo Joeys is open to all families with before-school-aged children and runs every Wednesday from 9.00am-11.00am in J Block, next to the Admin Block. Bring along a hat and some morning tea for your little one and come and join in the fun and social connections as your children learn through play at Kandoo Joeys Playgroup.

For more information contact Linda Merwood at playgroup@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

PLAYGROUP ACTIVITIES

ROCK AND WATER

This term 3A1 are lucky enough to be participating in the Rock and Water program with our wonderful Guidance Officer, Mr Graham.

Rock and Water is a course that is delivered over a number of lessons. A series of exercises and games are practised to develop confidence and self-reflection. The games are diverse and many have a martial arts origin. The program has a strong appeal to students who enjoy the active nature of the many games and drills. Students learn to stand strong, negotiate using “rock” or “water” verbal approaches, walk away from trouble, consider alternatives to aggression, and develop understandings about who they are, their intuitive feelings and their personal direction.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE

As always Beerwah State School are participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2023!

The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the challenge students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language, and additional languages, and are encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts.

Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.

The reading period has commenced and will continue until the 25th of August. So let’s get reading!

Helping Hands OHSC

Helping Hands provides quality before and after school care. This service forms strong, collaborative ties with the school, children, families, and the local community; to ensure the needs and interests of every child and family are supported. We provide an environment in which children feel safe and have fun. Afternoon tea is included.

We are located in D Block which is next to the Senior oval. For the children’s safety it is a requirement that you park in the allocated staff car park and use the footpaths to walk to and from the Centre. The car park will be open in the morning 6:30 to 7:30 and afternoon 5:00 to 6:00. Outside of these times, you will need to use the normal school carpark located on Old Gympie Rd. Children must be supervised at all times by an adult.

If you have any questions please phone Helping Hands Co-ordinator Sharon on: 0448 083 043, or click on the link below.

Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
