New Lambton Heights Infants School

Term 1 Week 6 2024 Newsletter

We at New Lambton Heights Infants School acknowledge that we learn and play on the traditional country of the Awabakal people. We pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging, valuing their knowledge and seeking continued respectful relationships.

We recognise, respect and appreciate the traditional custodians cultural heritage, beliefs, relationships, and continued connection with the land, the skies and the waterways. This continent was and always will be Aboriginal land.

The Family School

Kaayi

Our little school certainly lived up to its motto, The Family School, on Saturday at our P&C working bee. Over 15 families came throughout the morning to help paint, weed and lift rocks! I know that families are very busy and it was a lot to ask for time on a Saturday morning, so the amount of people who contributed and the amount of work we achieved exceeded my expectations. I left here on Saturday very tired, but buzzing!

What I enjoyed the most was seeing the interactions between the families. We had lots of new Kindergarten families, longer established families (including teenage former students) and new families that have not long lived in Australia. Saturday's working bee was a perfect  way to connect with their new community. At one stage I took a photo of Nancy and her family painting the mural .. three generations at work!

I was so excited for the kids to arrive at school this morning and see what had been done over the weekend .. and their reactions made it all worth it. We now have a finished mural, complete with a stall to sell fruit and veges. Some delicious coffees were being made this morning .. marshmallows included! The rock creek and mud kitchen have been restored to their former 2019 glory and our Year 2 2023 families have done a beautiful job of restoring the fairy garden with items donated by Year 2 2023. This includes two very special hand made mosaic stepping stones, made by Henry and Iris' grandmother. The playground equipment and sandpit area and garden around the water tank look neat and tidy with a mountain of weeds being pulled out! Mr Williams will be very happy tomorrow.

It wouldn't be a successful community event without food! Thank you to Ellen, Matt and Roisin for providing us with a delicious BBQ lunch and Iggy's uncle Bill for cooking the BBQ. Thank you to Kelly and Anna for inspiring this community event with their generous offer to paint the mural. When you come in for drop off or pick up this week please be sure to come and have a look.

A report from 2S

It is fun when we learn at school, especially being in year 2 with Mrs Stanbridge. I have really liked learning about action, saying, sensing and linking verbs.

We have also been learning about circular narratives. Narratives are a story that is not real. Sometimes narratives can be like a mountain where it starts at the bottom and goes up to the top and finishes off back at the bottom again. Other narratives can be circular narratives where the story starts and finishes at the same spot.

Year 2 have also been learning about patterns. We have learnt that there are a lot of patterns around us. We have also learnt about symmetrical shapes and lines. That is when you have equal parts on both sides or both halves.

In art, we have been making Awabakal sunsets, which look beautiful, and we have also been making Thomas Croft lizards. He's a local Aboriginal artist that we art learning about and he is very creative!

The working bee was a success. A big thank you to all the families that came and supported us on the day, special thanks to the parents that donated their time to painting, donating items, weeding and keeping us fed!

Snack Canteen is held every Friday during Second Lunch - between 12.45pm and 1.10pm. Most items cost $1.00 and these include flavoured milks, juice boxes, packets of chips, popcorn or grainwaves, and boxes of sultanas. For $0.50 students can purchase a frozen Quelch ice block. Skills For Learning - Using self talk

This is another great week for learning at our school. An important skill for learning is using self-talk. Self-talk means talking to ourselves in a quiet voice or in our heads. Self-talk can help us stay on task and focus attention. Think about what self-talk you might use if you were trying to remember directions your teacher gave you. Remember to use self-talk today when you need to stay focused and on task!
