Binalong Public School

Binalong Bulletin

Term 4, Week 5 2023

From the Principal

We've had a super busy couple of weeks at school with lots going on in the classroom and around the school grounds. You will have seen construction workers and tradesman around the place: installing new concrete paths in the front courtyard of the school and extending the concrete pad at the front of the sports shed; installing additional air vents in the external lower walls of B Block;  as well as the remediation works for the water/moisture issues in B Block with all affected areas being treated and new carpet to be laid. We are also looking forward to some upcoming refurbishments that are taking place with new cabinetry and wall panelling to be installed in B Block and new wall panels to be installed in E Block. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these times with changes to classrooms and accessible spaces and the disruptions that this has caused to some routines.

The P&C have had another successful Spring Fair with lots of fun to be had by all who attended. Check out the Spring Fair photos further along in the newsletter.

Students will be treated to a music concert this Thursday at Yass HS and next Monday they will travel to Canberra to visit the University of Canberra. A permission slip will go home today.

Please join us for our long-awaited fashion parade to be held at this Thursday's assembly from 2.00pm. It's sure to be a showstopper!

I'll be in Sydney on Thursday and Friday at the Regional South Principals' Conference and Mr Godman will be on 2/3 during this time.

Binalong Spring Fair 2023

Last Sunday 5 November the Binalong P&C held their annual Spring Fair, and what an event it was, and what wonderful childhood memories were made!

Some of the highlights of the day included: Raptor Reptiles, Circus McCabe, Murrumburrah HS petting zoo, pony rides, inflatables obstacle course, the BPS Bucket Drummers, poetry and musical entertainment, delicious food stalls, market stalls and much more!

Thank you to: the sponsors; the parent volunteers; those who donated prizes (and all who bought raffle tickets); those who ran activities; the Trethowan and Isbister families and friends (and their ponies!); the fabulous entertainment including Robyn Sykes, Jon and Brenton and the Harden AECG kids; all who attended; and of course the P&C exec and members who worked together over many months to make this event what it was.

The P&C look forward to sharing a full report in upcoming newsletters!

Bandanna Day 2023

From the SRC

We took part in National Bandanna Day on Friday 27 October and raised $187.00. Bandanna Day is the flagship fundraising and awareness campaign for Canteen.

Canteen provides free and tailored support to young people aged 12-25 who are impacted by cancer. Whether they are dealing with their own diagnosis, a close family member’s cancer or the death of a loved one, Canteen provides support such as counselling, peer support events and youth friendly resources.

Young people impacted by cancer are up to six times more likely to face mental health issues like anxiety or depression than their peers. After just six months of support from Canteen, almost two-thirds of young people report improvements in their mental health and overall wellbeing. Canteen also provides services for parents dealing with cancer in their family, because research shows that when parents are supported through cancer and communicate openly, their children are likely to experience less distress and anxiety.

Student Attendance

Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

  • being sick or having an infectious disease
  • having an unavoidable medical appointment
  • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unexplained on the student's record.

If your child has a late arrival or early departure from school, please come into the foyer of the Office and sign your child in/out.  The reason for absence should be detailed enough for staff to identify if the reason is acceptable.  If the reason noted is "appointment" the absence will be marked as unjustified as it is not a clear enough reason. Please be accurate with your description.

“I know that a day off here and there doesn’t seem like much but these absences can add up quickly and days lost can equal years lost.”

“The more your child attends school the greater opportunity he / she will have to reach his / her potential."
