Last Friday the SJB teaching staff engaged in a day of social outreach and spiritual formation for our Closure Day. As a team we commenced our morning entering into Hoiser Lane in Melbourne’s CBD where we met with the team at the Living Room. The Living Room is an organisation committed to community health, employment/training and social services supporting people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Our session at the Living Room provided an opportunity to engage and understand the struggles of many, as well as engage in action to support such an important organisation.
We were most appreciative that the team from the Living Room took time to share their mission, work and services with us. Our morning with the team at the Living Room was a humbling, inspiring, emotional and bonding experience that had a deep impact for us as a team. We are exceptionally grateful to the team at the Living Room for welcoming us into their space. This was a true privilege for us as a team as we place a high value on enacting our faith through social justice.
Youth Projects the Living Room
After our morning at the Living Room we moved to the NGV to engage in a tour: Encounter the Sacred. The aim of this session was to develop a deeper appreciation of the Judeo-Christian and Catholic Traditions by unpacking stories, ideas, signs and symbols in artworks and explore how these connect to past and contemporary contexts.
Learning Objectives
Analyse, interpret and discuss artworks.
Understand the symbols, signs, messages, and meanings of artworks to gain a deeper understanding of the Judeo-Christian and Catholic traditions.
Understand how to use the NGV as a resource for Religious Education.
Reflect on the experience through art making and discussion to identify practical strategies for teaching and learning in the classroom and beyond.
As staff plan Learning and Teaching for Term 3 they will consider how their learning from Friday can be transferred into deep learning experiences for our students.
