Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Introduction

Dear Families,

It is wonderful to see our students and school thriving in so many ways.

Congratulations to our students who performed at the Ferntree Gully Library for the Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday.  Our students presented themselves in an outstanding manner in the local community. It was wonderful to receive positive feedback from the wider community about how they thoroughly enjoyed the performance from our students.

Congratulations to all students who participated in District Cross Country at Crystal Brook Park, Cardinia Reservoir on Friday. True to form, all students represented St John’s in an exemplary manner. We are enormously proud of all students who participated and gave it their best shot. Such an outstanding job.  Students who are eligible for Division Cross Country will be informed in the coming days.

Our students once again presented themselves in a most reverent and respectful manner as we gathered as a school in recognition of National Sorry Day. We are enormously proud of how students conducted and presented themselves in reflecting on the hardship experienced by First Nation People.

Thank you to all of our wonderful staff for all of their work and efforts in organising and preparing these events with and for our students.  We are so very fortunate to have such dedicated and passionate staff.

Prep Enrolments 2024

Have you enrolled for 2024 or do you know of someone who is still yet to enrol? We ask all families to submit their enrolment forms as soon as possible.

Letters of acceptance will be emailed to all families who have enrolled their child for the 2024 school year throughout the next week.

First Eucharist Reflection Day and Sacrament of First Eucharist

The Year 3/4 students from St John the Baptist School and parish children will enjoy a Reflection Day as they prepare for their First Eucharist. Families will have received information from Mrs Marialisa Mandarino outlining what students will need for the day. Students are able to wear free dress on their Reflection Day.  They will participate in art activities, baking, meditation and activities with Year 10 students from Mater Christi.  We wish all students a wonderful day of reflection.

Father Thomas, St John's Parish and school warmly welcome families to join students on Saturday 17th June at 3:00pm for the Sacrament of Eucharist.  The afternoon will be a wonderful celebration of the students taking another step in their faith journey.

School Advisory Council Meeting

A School Advisory Council meeting has been scheduled for 7pm on Wednesday 14th June. As a committee we will discuss a number of aspects relating to the school.  This is a rescheduling of the meeting that was set for May.

Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews

Parent/teacher/student interviews will be held on Tuesday 20th June and Wednesday 21st June.  We encourage all students to attend interviews with their families. The focus of interviews is to celebrate the hard work students have undertaken throughout the semester, as well as the growth they have made as a result of their hard work. Families will be able to book their interview times through SOBS in the coming weeks.

Interviews will be held between:

     Tuesday 20th June 3:30-6:00pm

Wednesday 21st June 2:00-7:00pm (Early dismissal at 1.30pm)

Families can book their interviews through SOBS - SOBS Link

Bookings will open Monday June 5th at 9.00am.

Families will notice that this semester there has been a slight change to interview time frames. This change is required to assist with meeting Time in Lieu requirements that will come in with the new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. Interview time slots will change from 20 minute blocks to 15 minute blocks.

Semester 1 Student Reports will be distributed to families on Friday 16th June.

A friendly reminder that if you have a PSG for child that this includes your Parent/Teacher Interview. Families who attend a PSG do not book an additional Parent/Teacher Interview.

Dropping Off and Picking Up Children School Car Park

School drop off and pick up points and car parks present challenges for all school communities.

At St John the Baptist we are most fortunate to have significant spaces for dropping off and picking up students. At the forefront of school drop off and pick up spaces is always child safety.  We ask families to familiarise themselves with the following expectations when dropping off and picking up students.

  • Families can either park or access kiss and drop zones from either Forest Road or Selman Ave

  • Families walking to school can access the grounds through the gate on Selman Ave or through the walkway between the Parish House and the Church.

  • Families riding to school can access the grounds through the gate on Selman Ave or through the walkway between the Parish House and the Church. All bike riders are required to dismount their bikes once on the school grounds and walk their bikes to the bike area.

  • There is strictly no parking in the staff car park or walking students through the staff car park.

  • The driveway of the church is not a kiss and drop zone

We ask all families to respect the outlined drop off and pick up requirements as a matter of safety to all.

Term 2

Wishing  everyone a terrific week ahead.

District Cross Country - Friday 26th May 2023

In very muddy and wet conditions the Sherbrooke/Boronia District Cross Country was held at Crystal Brook Park, Cardinia Reservoir on Friday 26th May. St John’s the Baptist PS took 45 students to compete-selected from the results of the School Cross country held the previous week.

All students displayed a tremendous amount of resilience and courage to compete in the challenging soft, slippery, muddy conditions. Shoes were even seen to fall off some competitors- but this did not stop any of our students finishing the course! We had some special results and all students are to be commended on their efforts. Each student's result is listed below. Nearly one-fifth of our  students qualified for the Division Cross Country to be held at Yarra Valley Racecourse on Tuesday 6th June.

There was a tremendous spirit among our students and parents watching on. We wish the students that have qualified all the best in their efforts at Division.

Our students' efforts were rewarded with the ‘small schools’ award for best performing school based on enrolment. This is a great achievement for our school.

Finally, I would like to thank the parents that assisted marshalling the course: Troy, Marco, Katie, Jess, Luke, Caroline and Jarrad. Renee and Trina that helped transport more students than their own and all the parents that gave up their time to support their children. Thank you to the other teachers that came with me to support, Mrs Sue Smith and Mrs Kathryn Forbes.
