COMPASS UPDATE INFORMATION

Compass has had an update for parents and guardians when logging in:

With this latest feature update, users have the option to sign in with their mobile number instead of a password. When users click on “Sign in with mobile number” they will be prompted to enter their username and mobile number, if the mobile number matches their Compass account they will get sent a one-time passcode which they enter in the next screen to log into the app.

Users also have the option to login with a one-time passcode using their email address by clicking “I want to use my email address”.

On every sign-in users will be sent a new one-time code.

What this means for our app users:

  • Easier and simpler passwordless login
  • Increased security and protection of student data
  • Reduced need to contact Support with login enquiries
  • Improved parent experience with the Compass app
  • Coherent experience between the app and web portal

Compass remains the College’s primary communication tool with parents and guardians and anyone having trouble accessing should contact the College straightaway. If we do not have your mobile number on record, or it has changed, you will also need to contact us so we can make the changes at our end.

Position Vacant

Nhill College is seeking an enthusiastic person wishing to work the equivalent of 2.5 days per week in an Education Support capacity as a Laboratory Assistant.  While a science background would be preferred, it is not required for the position.

For further details, please contact Mark Zimmermann at the school on 5391 2111.

The Resilience Project: Parent Hub

Kinder Visit

Nhill College will be offering a school visit and an information session to each family of our current 2023 kinder students on Friday the 28th July at 9.15 am  - 11.00 am.

We anticipate that the visit will be an invaluable opportunity to see our school in operation and to ask lots of questions.

In addition to the visit, please feel free to contact Nhill College over the coming months to arrange a private tour, interview or to make an appointment to discuss the school and your child’s needs.

We look forward to seeing parents and their kindergarten child in our school on Friday the 28th July.

Nhill College Staff and Students take on the Push-Up Challenge

Thursday 1st June saw a highly motivated group of students and staff commence the Push-Up Challenge, which will conclude on Friday 23rd June.

We have been trying to fit in a minute or so of push-ups, sit-ups or squats during form assembly and then Team members add to these at anytime throughout the day.

It is not too late to sign up – either join your year level Team, or you can also join as an individual within our Community. Ask your form teacher if you need help to do this. We currently have Teams from Year 12, 9 and 8.

Day 1 – the target was 96 push-ups – for the 96% of Australians who aren’t meeting recommended dietary guidelines – how we eat impacts our mental health.

Day 2 – Freestyle Friday – we don’t just have to do push-ups – sit-ups, squats, star jumps are all great alternatives! The target of 130 represents the 130 calls per hour that Lifeline receives on average.

Although our focus in participating in the Challenge is on completing the push-up targets and sharing the mental health messages, we would also like to share the donations page for our Nhill College Community page. If anyone would like to donate to this organisation, your donation will help #pushforbetter mental health in Australia, through early intervention and prevention for depression, anxiety and suicide. Because one life lost is too many.

https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraisers/ncpushups

We have chosen Lifeline Ballarat as the recipient of our donations.

Together, we #pushforbetter mental health @pushforbetter @movember @lifelineaustralia

Nhill College reward system called ROARWARDS has continued this term, with numerous students receiving ROARWARDS on a daily basis already this term. Students receive ROARWARDS by demonstrating Being Respectful, Being a Learner or Being Safe. At the Secondary and Primary assembly, all the students that received an award in the last week were placed in a draw to win a lucky dip prize. Students are randomly drawn by using an electronic spinning wheel. The winners were - Tyge, Lah Si, Riley W, Nellie, Lochie, Lisa, Doh Htoo, Zali D, and Eh Chrit.

We encourage every student to continue to display the positive behaviours of Being Respectful, Being a Learner and Being Safe.We look forward to seeing who wins next week form F-12.

Respectful Relationship Awards

In the primary section each week, students learn a different value to practice in the classroom and out in the yard. These values can help to influence students physical health, promote self-esteem, assist them in developing a sense of belonging in our school and enhance stronger social skills with mutual respect for everyone.

The Respectful Relationship Value for the fifth week of Term 2 was Determination

The award winners were  F - Eliza, 1/2 - Kaydence, 3/4 - Diesel, 4/5 - Eric and 5/6 - Lenny

The Canteen voucher was awarded to Eliza in Foundation

Junior Reading Awards

Students in the junior primary classes were recognised for their excellent progress in reading this week at the primary assembly.

Learning the most commonly occurring words in English is essential to every child's reading success.

The Magic Coloured Words make up 70% of all words in reading and writing.

The Magic Coloured Words have been divided into coloured levels according to their frequency - Golden Words, Red Words, Blue Words, Green Words, Orange Words, Indigo Words and Violet Words are contained in the first 100 words.

Congratulations to Penny, Ruby, Darcy, and Elodie on your great achievement in reading the Magic Coloured Words.

Once students have completed the Magic Coloured Word levels, they start to learn Fry Sight words. These lists comprise of 1000 of the most common words that appear in reading materials used in year 2 and up into the secondary years.

Congratulations to Matilda on your great achievement in reading Fry Sight words.

VCE-VM Unit 1 Business visits excursion

This week the Unit 1 VCE-VM WRS class travelled to Horsham to participate in some industry visits organised by the terrific team at the Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN. We combined with our friends from Kaniva College for the day out.

Our day started at Morrow Motors – with a tour of the business by Dealer Principal Gavin Morrow. Gavin shared his story in the automotive industry, the success of the business and the broad range of pathways in the Morrow Motor group.

Next stop was an insight into the fitness industry at Snap Fitness. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to test out the facilities too much but our presenter Jacqui shared openly how she got into the industry and what she gets out of working to help people in fitness. We hope to arrange a visit at another time to make use of the facilities there.

WSM LLEN had then very generously organised for us to have lunch at the Capital restaurant – before eating we had a tour of both the accommodation and kitchen sides of the Capital/Comfort Inn operations. Our presenters talked about the important role everyone from cleaners to front of house staff has in maintaining high standards and the reputation of the business. During our lunch, Cody Effrett from Ray White Horsham spoke with students about the real estate industry. Cody offered great advice to students about finding your pathway – and also some tips about buying/selling property!

After lunch we were fortunate to have a comprehensive tour of O’Connor’s Case IH dealership – once again we were amazed at the wide range of career pathways available within the organisation, we heard from some ‘older’ staff members about the changes to their work with the use of technology. We even bumped into a former Nhill College student who now works at O’Connor’s Horsham!

A huge thank you to David and Di from the WSM LLEN for making this opportunity available to our students, and thank you to the students for their respectful and engaged behaviour.

COVID-19 Reminders

Current COVIDSafe measures in Victorian government schools require us to continue to implement important practices to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Vaccinations

Staff and students are strongly recommended to ensure they keep up-to-date with all recommended and available COVID-19 vaccinations as vaccinations are the best way to protect individuals, families and school communities from the severe effects of COVID-19 and reduce the spread of the virus.

Rapid Antigen Testing

It is recommended that rapid antigen tests (RATs) are used by students and staff :

  • If you have symptoms of COVID-19 infection, no matter how mild
  • If you are a household or close contact of someone who has COVID-19
  • If you are a social contact of someone who has COVID-19.

The Department of Health recommends that all Victorians should report their positive RAT result to the Department of Health online, or by calling 1800 675 398. Students (or their parents) should also report a positive result to their school, either through the COVID Test portal or by phone or written notification.

Rapid Antigen Tests are available for all Victorians from Council sites. People can get 2 free packs (10 tests) for themselves and 2 free packs (10 tests) for each of their household members.

Face Masks

Face masks continue to be available from the school and any staff or students who wish to wear a mask is supported to do so.

Management of suspected cases of COVID-19

A ‘suspected’ case means a person who displays any COVID-19 symptoms

who has not yet tested positive for COVID-19.

It is recommended that any staff member, student or visitor who is symptomatic should undergo testing for COVID-19. Parents of students who are symptomatic will be asked to collect their child from school and to keep them home until they are no longer symptomatic.

Management of a confirmed case at school

Where a student or staff member is identified as a positive case, they should isolate for a minimum of 5 days and not attend school until their symptoms have resolved. There is no longer a requirement for principals to inform the school community of a positive case associated with the school.

Nhill College BYOD Options available for 2023 through Edunet

Computers are being used more frequently in many aspects of our teaching and learning programs, and Nhill College strives to make a 1:1 provision of devices available for student use in the classroom.  However, students using school-owned laptops are not permitted to take them home at night and these devices must be returned to the charging station in the library at the end of each day.  Students wishing to access devices at home to support their learning are encouraged to explore the range of devices available through Edunet as part of our BYOD program.  In addition to gaining access to your own device, purchases through Edunet provide students with school based IT support and manufacturer's warranty, as well as access to the College's network, servers and printers.  Families purchasing a BYOD will also be provided with access to the Department of Education's Microsoft 365 suite, which gives free access to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc on up to 5 family devices.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the link below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.  Devices specifically chosen for Nhill College students cover a range of specifications and price levels, and include the following options:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Yoga 5th Gen
  • Lenovo 500w Gen 3
  • Lenovo 13w Yoga
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 3
  • Apple MacBook Air 13.6"
  • Apple MacBook Pro 13.3"

All devices are listed at education prices, which can be viewed along with each device's specifications at Edunet's online ordering portal via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au .

The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NCBYOD.

Alternatively, scan the QR code attached to this article to be taken directly to the Nhill College Edunet portal.

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

Safer Internet Day

Mobile Phones

Students and parents are reminded that in accordance with the DET's Mobile Phones - Student Use Policy, personal mobile phones must not be used at Nhill College during school hours, including lunchtime and recess, unless an exception has been granted.

At Nhill College we understand that students may bring a personal mobile phone to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school.  However, students who choose to bring a mobile phone to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours in their lockers (7-12) or in the secure storage safe provided in their classroom (F-6).  For any questions relating to this policy, please feel free to contact the school.

Sunsmart

Students are reminded of the requirement for them to wear a broad brimmed hat in the yard during recess and lunch times on days when the UV rating reaches 3 or above.  Nhill College parents are now able to use the school's website to find out when it is predicted that UV index levels will reach 3 or more, which generally occurs between mid-August and April.  The Sunsmart App - which can also be downloaded onto your mobile devices - tells parents the maximum UV index levels predicted for the day as well as the hours when sunscreen measures are recommended.  This link has been attached to the front page of our website (https://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/), so please visit often and keep your children safe.

Now that we are entering into that time of year when UV levels are likely to reach 3 or above, it is an appropriate time to remind everyone to ensure that students have remembered to bring their broad brimmed hats to school.  Very affordable options are available in the Uniform Store if required.  In addition, extra shade has been secured in the yard following the installation of the large shade sail in the courtyard as well as the one placed over the school BBQ area earlier this year.

School Attendance: Every Day Counts

Research shows that the academic and social development of students is affected each day they are absent, and that going to school every day is the single most important part of your child's education.  Following the potential disruptions to the social and academic progress of students caused due to COVID-19 over the past two years, it is more important than ever for children to be at school.

If your child is unwell or absolutely cannot attend school for some reason, it is important to let the school know of their absence and the reason why prior to the day if planned or at the start of the day if the absence is not planned.  The easiest way to do this is via Compass.  Alternatively, you can contact the office at school on 5391 2111.

If your child is absent and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message asking you to contact the school with an explanation.  If we do not receive a reply to our text message, we will be following up with a phone call.
