"STRIVE TO BE YOUR BEST'

From the Admin Team - Mr Arnott, Miss Hoskins and Mr Jasper

We are halfway through the year already and hopefully some rain is on the way. The students and staff have worked hard this semester and I am pleased to say that their reports reflect the perseverance, hard work and Growth Mindset we focus on in our Great Expectations. The students should all be congratulated on their efforts and carry this rigor through to Semester 2.

STAFFING UPDATE

Our staff continues to grow as we look to meet our student needs across the school. Next term we will be welcoming Mrs Kara Pearse to our team to teach the P/1 class on Tuesdays. Mrs Pearse has been conducting some relief in the school this term and has already developed some great relationships with our students, and we look forward to having her on board.

With Mrs Pearse joining us it releases Miss Hoskins. Miss Hoskins will now be working with the Year 1/2 class at times each week so that Mrs Chant can run a Small Group Tuition program. This program is a new initiative from the Department of Education, and we are very excited to have been chosen to participate.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Miss Lizzie Harper and Miss Andie Johnson on the successful completion of their practicums. Our students are very thankful to have had you as their teachers this term, and we hope you consider Cunderdin DHS as a career opportunity in the future.

We are currently advertising for Special Needs Education Assistants. If you are interested in joining our staff and working with our amazing students, please visit jobs.wa.gov.au to apply or contact the school on 9635 3300 if you have any queries.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY

There will be no staff development day to start Term 3, so the students will commence on Monday 21 July. However, in Week 6 we will have a staff development days on Monday 25 August. This is to enable our staff to engage in some professional learning provided by the Department. We thank you for your understanding.

TERM 3

The Planner for Term 3 is already quite busy, with incursions, excursions, Book Week, athletics, interschool carnivals, assemblies and guest speakers already booked. Whilst these are all linked to the students’ curriculum, they do serve as interruptions from classroom learning, so it is essential that students attend as often as they can in order to gain a full year’s worth of learning. If you are able to support in any aspect of the planning or running of these events, especially with carnival preparations, please contact the school.

FLORENCE MOORE SHORT STORY COMPETITION

The annual Florence Moore Short Story Writing Competition is now open. Entries can be submitted with an attached entry form to the front office by COB 31 July 2025.

CLUBS

You may be aware that Friday afternoons are allocated to Clubs for students from Pre-Primary to Year 10. This initiative allows students to connect and support each other across year levels while exploring different aspects of learning in a fun and engaging way. If you have a particular skill set or are able to support staff in delivering a club activity, we would love to hear from you. For example, if you have experience in athletics, your support would be especially valuable during the upcoming carnival season as we focus on developing these key skills. Please contact the school if you are interested in getting involved.

PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS

Parent/Teacher interviews will be held on Thursday 24 July from 2:45 to 4:30pm. If you would like to make an interview time please email cunderdin.dhs@education.wa.edu.au or phone the front office 9635 3300.

REPORTING TO PARENTS

It is that time of the year again. Student reports were emailed home on Friday 27 June. Please take the time to share in your child/ren’s successes and future goals. Every student has a positive aspect to their report and should be proud of their achievements and work towards their focus goals for Semester 2. If you have any concerns or queries, or you are unable to open the reports on your email, please contact the school.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

The term has flown by and here we are almost halfway through the school year. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) at Cunderdin DHS is in full swing. Secondary students have continued to display the four Great Expectations and been able to utilise the PBS shop to acknowledge their positive choices. The PBS committee would like to thank the school and the P & C for their continued support of this initiative. As the term comes to a close, Primary classes are looking at their acknowledgement activity for the accumulation of Great Expectations tickets.

Classrooms have been engaging with Explicit Instruction behaviour lessons, using our school’s behaviour matrix to focus on specific areas for our Great Expectations. Staff have been delivering lessons and having engaging discussion with year groups to identify positive behaviour. Students have found the videos of examples and non-examples helpful in identifying appropriate behaviours, and also a little bit of humour watching staff demonstrate the ‘wrong” thing.

Classrooms have continued using Play is the Way to teach problem solving skills, resilience and cooperation, particularly in managing emotions and dealing with setbacks.  Students have worked together to achieve common goals and had a lot of fun and laughter along the way.

The PBS committee were extremely fortunate to have Christina Lockyer, WAPBS Regional Coordinator, attend CDHS to support the committee in reflecting on current practices, offering insight and assistance to further develop systems and processes for PBS at our school. We look forward to working closely with Christina as move forward along this journey

Kindergarten News with Mrs Freind.

What a wonderful and busy term we’ve had in Kindergarten!

We began the term with a heartwarming Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea Party. It was so lovely to welcome all our mums and grandmothers into the classroom to celebrate this special day. The children were very proud to share some special treats and a few surprises with their loved ones.

In our Talk for Writing lessons, we had so much fun learning the story “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” We created a story map to help us remember the story and even made our very own bears to go on an adventure with us!

We also explored a non-fiction text about sheep. The highlight was when Mrs Stokes brought in real wool from her farm! The children were fascinated and loved using the wool in a special craft project. To make it even more exciting, Miss Taylor brought in her crochet needles and showed us what wool can be turned into, like scarves and blankets. The children were amazed to see how the wool could be transformed into something so beautiful and useful!

In phonics, we have been busy clapping out syllables in words, identifying pairs of rhyming words, and listening carefully for the initial sounds in simple words. The children are becoming fantastic sound detectives!

During maths, we have been learning about patterns, creating our own using shapes, colours, and objects. We’ve also been developing our subitising skills by playing fun dice games and quickly recognising quantities without counting.

Art has been especially exciting this term. We explored different mediums, using straws to blow dye across paper, rollers, sponges, and brushes to create vibrant artworks. The children have been very creative and expressive with their painting!

To help develop fine motor skills, we’ve been enjoying hands-on activities with playdough and kinetic sand. These materials are not only fun to play with but also help strengthen little fingers for writing.

Our morning fitness sessions have kept us active and energised. The children have been learning how to do pencil rolls, forward rolls, and practice underarm throws using bean bags. It’s been great to see their confidence and coordination grow.

It’s been a joyful term filled with learning, laughter, and lots of hands-on experiences. We’re so proud of how much the children have grown and can’t wait for more adventures ahead!

Pre-primary and Year 1/2 Class with Miss Reynders

What a fantastic Term 2 it has been in Room 1/2! We've had a busy and rewarding term filled with learning, growth, and plenty of memorable moments. The students have continued to demonstrate enthusiasm, resilience, and a strong commitment to upholding our classroom and school values.

Our Class Focus:

This term we have been focusing on being our best and being respectful! We have discussed ways to uphold these values in everyday life, such as keeping our hands and feet to ourselves, listening respectfully to others, and using kind words. We have participated in explicit PBS lessons, class discussions, and played PBS games that reinforce how we can demonstrate the school’s values every day.

Writing:

This term in Writing, we have been using the Talk for Writing approach to support and strengthen our storytelling skills. We started by exploring the story "Take a Walk, Little Bear", which the students have really enjoyed. They have practised retelling the story using actions, story maps, and shared writing activities, helping them understand how to structure a story with clear sentences.

More recently, we’ve started learning how to write information reports. Our first topic is kangaroos, and the students are learning how to organise facts into different sections and write clearly to share information. It’s been a great way to build their confidence in writing for different purposes.

Reading:

This term, we have been exploring a variety of texts and practicing our comprehension skills by answering thoughtful questions. We’ve been focusing on strengthening our questioning and predicting abilities to better understand what we read. Recently, we began using reading comprehension PowerPoints connected to our History topic on family history, which has helped make our reading lessons more engaging and relevant.

Mathematics:

This term in Mathematics, we’ve been busy revising key concepts such as numbers from 0 to 20, sorting collections, and learning the days of the week and months of the year. We’ve also started exploring addition and subtraction strategies, 2D and 3D shapes, and have been introduced to time.

Students have particularly enjoyed hands-on activities focused on more and less, length, and mass. Our learning has been supported through fun, interactive games during maths rotations and creative, maths-based crafts.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS):

This term in HASS, our focus has been on History, particularly exploring the concept of past and present. We’ve had some great discussions about how everyday life has changed over time, including families and their roles, toys, school experiences, and ways we communicate. Students have enjoyed comparing the past to their own lives today and are developing a strong understanding of how things have evolved over the years.

Art:

This term in Art, we’ve been exploring the elements of art: colour, line, shape, and texture. Students learned about the difference between primary and secondary colours, as well as the contrast between warm and cool colours. To bring all of these elements together, we created vibrant hot air balloon artworks, using our knowledge in a creative and thoughtful way. The students loved expressing themselves while applying what they’ve learned in such a fun and colourful project.

Digital Technology:

In Room 1/2, we have been revisiting different types of computers and their parts and difference between hardware and software. Additionally, students have started learning about different types of data and the importance of online privacy and keeping personal information safe. These lessons help build a strong foundation for understanding technology and using it responsibly.

Year 1/2 Classroom happenings with Mrs Chant

We have had yet another busy term of learning in the Year 1/2 class.

We started the term busily preparing for Mother’s Day making gifts and organising a lovely afternoon on Friday 9 May, where we joined with the P/1 class to have afternoon tea and celebrate our Mums and other special ladies in our lives. It was a great afternoon of fun where we made magical wands, had tea parties, created works of art, decorated biscuits and did some loose parts play.

In Mathematics, we have been doing a lot of work with numbers and working out easy ways to complete tricky addition and subtraction tasks. We have also been practising getting quicker with our basic number facts and working on place value.

In English, we studied Little Red Riding Hood through our Talk 4 Writing program.  We learn the story off by heart and then had fun as a whole class changing characters for the story to become Little Snow Drop Bunny.  After we learnt eh story with our new characters, we then did our own individual stories where we again changed the characters. Our new stories are fabulous, and we are planning to turn them into a class book.

Our HASS lessons this term have been devoted to History. We have been learning about daily lives now compared to the past. We had the opportunity to interview our parents or grandparents and then we compared their lives to what ours are like now. We have discovered that there has been a lot of changes, especially with technology. It was also interesting to discover that rules were very different for our parents and grandparents compared to our own rules.

We hope everyone has a fantastic break and relaxing holiday. We will see everyone again next term.

Year 4/5 Classroom with Miss Couper

Literacy

This term, our class has been focusing on recounts and narratives, using the exciting text Zelda Claw as inspiration. Students have been developing their writing by exploring character, setting, and plot, and learning how to build tension and structure stories effectively. We’ve recently dove into using dialogue to engage the readers.

In Reading, we’ve been learning about our neighbouring countries and their climates, using informational texts to compare environments and practise key comprehension strategies like summarising and making connections.

Mathematics

This term, Mathematics has been all about exploring numbers and solving real-world problems! We’ve been diving into fractions, learning how to recognise and compare fractions. Students have also been mastering the formal algorithm for addition and subtraction, developing their confidence with carrying and borrowing to solve more complex problems.

In Measurement, we became shape detectives—calculating area and perimeter of different spaces and discovering how these concepts connect to the world around us, like designing gardens or building enclosures. It’s been a hands-on, minds-on term full of mathematical thinking and problem-solving!

Arts

In Art this term, we’ve been exploring the wonderful world of texture! Students have experimented with different materials and techniques to create artworks that not only look interesting but also feel unique. From rough bark rubbings to soft, layered collages, we've learned how texture can add depth and emotion to our creations. We've also looked at how artists use texture in their work and used these ideas to inspire our own masterpieces. It’s been a fun and tactile journey of creativity and expression!

Humanites and Social Sciences (HASS)

This term in HASS, we’ve been learning about the importance of rules and laws in our communities. Students explored why we have rules, who creates laws, and how they help keep people safe and fair. We discussed the differences between school rules and national laws, and looked at real-life examples to understand their impact. Through role-plays, discussions, and case studies, students developed a stronger understanding of civics and citizenship and the role they play in being responsible community members.

Indonesian

We have been learning numbers above thirty and learning about describing our peers appearance and personality.

Year 5/6 Classroom with Mr Hill

Room 3 has had a busy and exciting term filled with plenty of creative fun. Students have continued to build strong friendships, take pride in their learning and challenge themselves in new and exciting ways. Whether working collaboratively, diving into their writing, or exploring learning through hands on activities, students have tackled everything Term 2 has thrown at them with enthusiasm and a sense of curiosity. One of the most exciting events this term was our Winter Carnival. Students participated in a range of sports including football, netball or hockey, showing enthusiasm and fantastic team spirit.

This term we stepped into the exciting world of Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg for our reading. Students were hooked from the start following the adventures of main characters Peter and Judy through a magical boardgame that brings animals to life. We have used the text to explore predictions, inferences and to compare character traits.

Our writing focus this term was character, using the Talk for Writing model to write a narrative text. Students have built up a character toolkit throughout the term, to help them write interesting characters, using adverbs, dialogue, metaphors and noun phrases to bring their characters to life. We began by learning the model text, then innovated our own versions before planning and writing original character driven narratives. It has been great to see students so engaged in their writing. To bring characters to life, students participated in character interviews, where they created and dressed up as a character of their choice. They were able to present to the class and answer interview style questions in role. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of character traits and voice, and we were blown away by the creativity, commitment and confidence they showed.

In visual arts we explored the element of texture through ephemeral art. Students collected natural materials like sticks, leaves and stones to design temporary artworks. These beautiful, collaborative pieces were photographed before nature reclaimed them.

In HASS, our focus was on Civics and Citizenship, where students explored the roles and responsibilities of government and the importance of democratic processes. To extend their understanding, we held or own class election using a preferential voting system. Students nominated for roles and voted using real ballot papers.

We’re so proud of the way Room 3 has worked together and supported each other throughout the Term. With so much amazing learning already behind us, we’re excited to see what Term 3 will bring!

Secondary English and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

The 7/8 English class have been focussing on creating their entries for the story book competition. It has been fantastic to see their level of enthusiasm and the effort they have put into their stories. The Year 9/10 English class have been doing film studies and looking at how similar themes can be explored in different mediums.

In HASS all classes have been studying Economics; the Year 7/8 focus has been on personal and national financial decision making, whereas the Year 9 10's have had a more global perspective.

All of the students had their exams this term and the Year 9/10 class incorporated a non-example of exam experience into their assembly. They also showcased developing suspense with a short skit called "It is time, yet?" It was fantastic to see so many parents and carers attend the assembly and the morning tea that followed. Thank you for your continued support of our students.

The Year 10's have been enjoying their Workplace Learning and we are preparing for the Year 9's to start Work Experience next term.
