Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 6 June 2025

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Our students have successfully undertaken a very busy past few weeks where we have seen the ‘Crafers spirit’ in full flight with a plethora of exciting learning opportunities for all to enjoy. Many students have demonstrated their commitment and courage towards ‘having a go’ and ‘giving their best effort’ in the form of speaking bravely in front of an Assembly audience for the first time, as well as participating in the Festival of Music band, soloists, and choreography state wide auditions. These have occurred alongside the efforts of children competing in local and state sporting events including netball and cross country running.

This week has seen our Reception to Year 5 students travelling down to Marion for the water safety program, hopping in the pool and developing new skills. Our school leaders have been busy leading multiple enrolment tours with prospective families by providing them with information about the school from their perspective and from the heart. Buddy classes have spent time working together on a series of activities as part of Reconciliation Week.

I continue to be in awe of how generous, hardworking, and supportive the volunteer community are within our school in ways that make a pleasant and rewarding difference for all. The Parents and Friends committee are currently busy preparing for our upcoming Quiz Night. The Uniform Shop remains a hive of activity and our Pedal Prix students are well prepared for next weekend’s race at Victoria Park, all due to the tireless work and ongoing commitment of our volunteers. For this, we all say a huge thank you!

We continue our shared journey with a whole school focus on our ‘Respect’ value, in order to create a deeper, shared understanding. Over the past few weeks, we have had an intentional focus on modelling respect in a variety of ways including; how we greet one another both physically and verbally, our roles and responsibilities as a bystander, showing respect to our school yard environment, as well as welcoming others to join in to break time play. Several students have been recognised for going above and beyond in modelling some of these behaviours at our recent Assembly to which they have contributed towards our Values Cup (which we will share more about in the next newsletter).

We are all proud of what is achieved in this wonderful school community and for the many learning opportunities that take place.

Kind regards

Shaun Barber

A note from Ebony

I have recently started reading the ‘When I’m feeling…’ book series by Trace Moroney with the reception students and looking at how emotions feel and what they look like. By working with our youngest students on identifying and naming their emotions, we are seeking to provide them with deeper emotional language and strategies to face and manage the big emotions they will experience in life.

If you haven’t seen these books, they are well worth a look. Each book names a feeling and situations children might experience in life that evoke that feeling. It talks about feelings in a positive way and provides strategies to navigate through the tougher ones.

An excerpt from the parents’ section in each of these books says: ‘Talking about feelings teaches children that it is normal to feel sad, or angry, or scared at times. With greater tolerance of painful feelings, children become free to enjoy the world, to feel secure in their abilities, and to be happy.’

Room 3 Report

Rainforest Art in Room 4

Last term the class were researching Australia’s neighbouring countries (Year 3) and areas of South America (Year 4). They looked at the different climate types as well as the vegetation.

Using collage and layering techniques, each student made a rainforest art piece. They added forest animals and plants, using paintwash, coloured paper and paint textas. The finished pictures add a vibrancy to our room and the art skills are developing well.

Alice's Springs

Integrated work – the class have been listening to a story called ‘Alice’s Springs’ about a basketball team who incorporated tap dancing into their training. This is because the courts get so hot, they decided to jump around more to protect the soles of their shoes.  The topic covers English – character development, descriptive language and using strong words in advertising. Each student designed a basketball shoe that needed an original logo, as well as a slogan for advertising. Some of them are very clever and they did a great job with their artwork.

Community Survey

Calling all Adelaide Hills community members! This is your opportunity to provide feedback on how we are going as an organisation and to share what is most important to you!

Every two years we undertake a community perception survey to help us understand what we're doing well, where we could improve, what you love about living in the Hills and your ideas for the future.

We want to hear from people of all ages and backgrounds from right across our community. We have created a special survey for Hills residents aged under 18 to make it easier for young people to get involved.

Those who complete the survey can select to go into the draw to win one of three vouchers to Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, Cleland Wildelife Park or Gorge Wildlife Park.

Head to https://engage.ahc.sa.gov.au/community-survey-2025 for further information.
