TERM ONE WEEK SEVEN

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

ATTENDANCE - EVERY DAY MATTERS

It’s always great to see our students ready to learn in the classroom! Our teachers and staff are dedicated to helping your child grow and succeed. Regular school attendance has many benefits, including learning new things, making friends, and improving overall wellbeing through quality education.

Students need to come to school every day, no matter if it’s the first or last day of the term, or days for sports, excursions, or special events.

As we move through the school year, we want to remind you that we’re here to support your child’s success. We understand that families may face challenges, and we are committed to helping you address any issues that might affect regular attendance.

If your child is absent, please let us know the reason as soon as you can, even if it’s just a quick message at the beginning or end of the day. While there are times when a child may be unwell and cannot attend, we encourage scheduling medical appointments outside of school hours when possible and taking family holidays during term breaks.

If your child feels anxious about coming to school, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their teacher for support. You can also find helpful resources for parents and carers on the NSW Department of Education website.

NAPLAN

On Wednesday, we kicked off the NAPLAN testing period for our Year 3 and 5 students. NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is designed to assess students' skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy.

Participation in NAPLAN is important as it provides valuable insights into student learning and helps us identify areas where additional support may be needed. We encourage all students to approach the tests with a positive mindset and remind them that this is just one measure of their learning journey.

If you have any questions or concerns about NAPLAN, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to ensure a successful testing experience for our students.

WELCOME BBQ

A big thank you to our wonderful P&C for organising the first event of the year—the Welcome BBQ! It was a fun afternoon as students and families enjoyed a delicious sausage sizzle and gelato. We are excited for the P&C’s  upcoming annual trivia night, scheduled for Saturday, March 29. We hope to see everyone there for a night of fun competition!

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY - COVERAGE ON CHANNEL 10!

Last week, our Green Team successfully organised Clean Up RPS Day as part of the annual Clean Up Australia Day initiative. We were thrilled to have Channel 10 reporter Daniel Doody and Pip Kiernan, daughter of Clean Up founder Ian Kiernan, join us for the event. The Green Team's efforts were highlighted in a news segment, and we are excited to share this experience with our RPS families!

GREEN TEAM - CHANNEL 10

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

In response to community feedback and in consultation with our teachers, we have adjusted the dates for Parent-Teacher Interviews. This is an excellent opportunity for parents and carers to meet with teachers, discuss student progress, and explore ways to support learning at home. The interviews will now take place at the beginning of Term Two. Please stay tuned for further details on scheduling and how to book a timeslot. We look forward to your participation!

SPOTLIGHT ON VISUAL ARTS

Did you know that Rozelle has a dedicated Specialist Art Teacher? Alison Cole is an experienced educator who infuses creativity and passion for visual arts into every lesson. Throughout the year, all students will participate in art lessons for a full semester (two terms), where they will explore a variety of artistic techniques and media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms. We can't wait to share their wonderful creations in upcoming newsletters!

PRESCHOOL 2026

Preschool is a crucial foundation for children's development, and we are proud that Rozelle Public School offers a program led by Sandy Dorn-Steger. Under her guidance, children receive supportive and enriching experiences that enhance their social, emotional, and cognitive growth, preparing them well for their future learning journeys.

For families considering preschool at Rozelle in 2026, here is important information regarding the Expression of Interest process:

APPLICATION TIMELINE: Expressions of Interest to enrol in Rozelle Public School Preschool for 2026 will be accepted from 9:00am on Monday 28 April 2025.

HOW TO APPLY: Families can express their interest by completing the expression of interest to enrol in a NSW public preschool (PDF 316.2 KB). The completed application can be emailed or submitted directly to the RPS office. EOIs will be time and date stamped upon receipt. Please note that applications cannot be accepted before 9:00am on Monday 28 April 2025.

●       Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children

●       Children living in low socioeconomic circumstances

●       Children unable to access other early childhood services due to disadvantage

FIRST PLACEMENT OFFERS: First round offers are made to children living within the Rozelle Public School catchment area.

FORM B: In addition to the EOI, the Preschool Enrolment panel requires families to complete Form B. This should be submitted with your EOI. Hard copies of both forms are available from the school office.

NUT AWARE
A number of students at Rozelle have been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to nuts. While it is not advised for the school to declare itself “nut-free” we are definitely a “nut-aware” school. This means that we ask parents/carers to carefully consider the food they provide for their child and avoid foods that contain nuts. Before sending in food for special occasions for your child’s class, please check with the teacher. The school appreciates everyone’s effort in keeping all our students safe and supporting their families to manage this difficult situation.
