Term 2 Week 3 Newsletter - Friday 12 May 2023

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Thank you

Thank you to Dianne Colb for acting as relieving Principal for me in recent weeks to support my extended break getting the school off to an excellent start for Term 2.  Thank you also to Leigh Russ (relieving Deputy Principal) and Kathy Xenos (relieving Assistant Principal stage 2) for taking on additional executive roles during this time.

Reading Workshop

Thank you to every parent that attended our Thursday workshop on teaching your children to read with around 60 parents attending (see photo). In addition to the handouts on practical things parents can do, the slides from the presentation will be included in the newsletter. I would like to sincerely thank our speakers Beck Cantlay (Assistant Principal Curriculum & Instruction) and Gaby Walsh (Assistant Principal – Kindergarten) for their commitment to literacy in the early years.

Mother’s Day

We would like to wish all of our Mums, ‘Grand-mums’ and ‘Mums to Be’ a very special Mother’s Day on Sunday and thank all of our ladies for their faithful support of our children and the school throughout the year. We hope it is lovely time for all of our Drummoyne families.

Annual Report

Each year the Department of Education asks all schools to prepare an annual report on school progress and achievements.  The 2022 Annual Report is now available on the school’s website found at: https://drummoyne-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/school-planning-and-reporting.html

At the P&C meeting on Tuesday night, I will provide a short presentation on the report and answer any questions parents may have.

New Curriculum Planning Days

This term teachers will again be released from class teaching for a day (primary teachers) or two days (infant’s teachers) to participate in training related to the new curriculum.  In addition, our staff will soon have the opportunity to engage with Mathematics consultant Anita Chin through demonstration lessons and stage workshops. This professional learning follows the 3.30pm – 5.30pm staff meeting with Anita last week and is central to our target on improving numeracy for all students across the school.

Winter Uniform

Thank you to every family that support our children to be in full school uniform every school day. While for the colder mornings children need to rug up, please ensure that school uniform is being worn.

Learning & Enrichment Support Team

Each week our teaching and specialist staff meet to discuss strategies and plan support to meet the needs of many students across the school. This support focuses on students who are experiencing difficulties but also on students who are progressing well and maybe exceeding curriculum expectations to ensure their continued progress through enrichment strategies. If the Learning Enrichment & Support Team is concerned about a student, then contact will be made with a family.

P&C Meeting

The May P&C meeting will be held this Tuesday 16 May from 7.30pm in the library and all parents/carers are invited to join us.

Community Users @ DPS

The Department of Education’s policy is that schools are encouraged to make their facilities available for use by the community. Even so, this must be for appropriate purposes, must not interfere with the school’s provision of learning programs and be of mutual benefit to the school and the community. DPS accommodates our community groups, where possible, and this year has entered into Community User agreements with nine groups, including GOWRIE NSW, giving students access to music, languages, mindfulness and chess classes as well as community access to Tai Chi and Karate classes. The school has carefully scheduled these classes, in and around school programs. While we have already provided as many spaces as we have available for this year, we look forward to continued support of community programs in the future.

Road Safety

School Crossings

For your child’s safety, it’s very important to ensure they use the school crossing. At all crossings you must wait on the footpath, at least one step back from the edge of the road. Please wait until the school crossing supervisor has stopped the traffic and called you to cross.

If you are driving, you must not proceed until the school crossing supervisor’s hand-held sign is no longer displayed, or until the crossing supervisor indicates that you may proceed through the crossing.

Scooters and Bikes

Students who ride their bikes or scooters to school are reminded about our expectations:

  • Once at the school gate, students are to walk their bikes or scooters to the bike racks in the South playground.
  • Stand bikes where possible and neatly store scooters.
  • Students riding bikes and scooters must wear a helmet.

Valuables Policy

On occasion, students may decide to bring items to school that hold significant monetary or sentimental value. In keeping with legal advice from the Department of Education, the school cannot accept liability for personal belongings, valuables and other student owned property if these items become lost, stolen or broken.

As a result, we discourage students from bringing valuables to school including mobile telephones, Smart watches, digital devices, cameras, ‘swap’ cards and the like to school.

Deputy Principal

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures in schools

NSW Health advise that COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. People exposed to COVID-19 should follow NSW Health guidanceExternal link and test to identify infection early even if they are not experiencing any symptoms.

  • strongly encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations for students, staff and their families, including a booster shot (when eligible) and maintaining double dose vaccination requirements for staff who work in an SSP

  • good hygiene practices including regular hand washing with soap and warm water and/or use of hand sanitiser

  • maintaining natural ventilation, with consideration of local environmental circumstances

  • boosted cleaning during the day, with particular attention given to high touch surface areas
  • wearing a mask for all staff and visitors when working with or visiting Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs), support units or schools with students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19 particularly indoors and when physical distancing is not possible

  • assessing risk and applying appropriate safeguards across activities and events

COVID reporting

It is important for our community to register their positive RAT result to Service NSW to access NSW Health support including antiviral medicines if they are eligible.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

Dr Vicky Sheppeard, NSW Health Director of Communicable Diseases, said while the flu vaccine is still the best protection, simple hand hygiene is also important.

“Basic hygiene can help prevent flu and other infections spreading in the community, so it’s really important to cover your coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands regularly,” Dr Sheppeard said.

DEBATING REPORT

Debate #1

This week DPS had their first debate against Orange Grove Public School. The topic was ‘that student leaders should be picked at random, rather than being elected’.

The Bartons were the away team. As the affirmative, they clearly and confidently argued that random selection would result in a more diverse student leadership group and prevent a ‘popularity contest’, also ensuring students are not  influenced by others on who to vote for or bribed with fake promises.

Their compelling teamline was ‘No campaigning, no speeches, no ballots, no popularity contests!’ Congratulations to 1st speaker Aydin Dizdar, 2nd speaker Amber Worden, 3rd speaker Gabrielle Buckman and team advisor Theo Kav who won their debate. Well done, Aydin who was chosen as debater of the day, for his diabolical manner. A very big thankyou to Gabrielle's dad, Jon, for providing transport.

The negative team, the Scomos, comprising Hugo Hackett as 1st speaker, 2nd speaker  Arun Bains, 3rd speaker Sienna Zheng and Irelen McCleave as team advisor, argued  the importance of the democratic process and freedom of choice, also saying that not everyone has the necessary leadership qualities nor the desire to lead.

Their excellent team line was ‘Democracy rules!’ The Scomos also won their debate. Congratulations to Sienna, who was chosen as the debater of the week for her clear voice projection.

Also, thank you to our chairperson Lucy Fernley, timekeeper Amelia Baggett-Grenfell and meeter and greeters Aria Shipp and Sophie Hill.

GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.

P&C Committee

Reminder - please return your P&C Volunteer Form ASAP

Each year our parent community plays a vital role in supporting Drummoyne Public School.  We are very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community! The richness of school life that the children enjoy is due to the ongoing support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school.

One important avenue of support is through P&C organised activities, providing funds each year for various projects.

The purpose of this post is to ask all families to support the organisation of one P&C activity this year.  Our hope is that all families will ‘play a part’ in enriching the lives and learning of our children through volunteering for just one activity.

Would you please indicate on the form attached below one P&C activity or role that you would be willing to be involved in this year and hand to your child’s class teacher at a parent teacher interview or to the school office and record your willingness to support the school and P&C.

This information will be collated and a member of the P&C will be in touch in due course.

We hope that 2023 is a wonderful year for you and your family.
