From the Principal's Desk...

Sadly for all of us at BPS, Mrs Felicity Bowman has made the decision to no longer teach at Balmain Public School. Throughout her time here, Mrs Bowman has performed her various roles with exceptional expertise, care, and dedication. Her positive influence has been felt by students, staff, and the entire community. Mrs Bowman will certainly be missed! I know you will join me in expressing our gratitude to Mrs Bowman and wishing her all the best in her future endeavours.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

3/2 ANTILOCAPRA!!!

It's official! The 3/2A Potato Olympics have commenced. Our enthusiastic trainers held Olympic qualifying trials to find the top Spudletes in their countries. Trainers and Spudletes enjoyed an opening ceremony where all Spudletes were introduced. Each Spudlete has its own uniform and flag, and spent time decorating their rooms in the athletes village whilst waiting for their events to commence.

On Day 1 Spudletes competed in the Gymnastics Beam event. Spudletes tried to complete a beam routine over 30cm and 1m beams. How do you think we went? Could we manage to master the beam?! (What this looks like: Students had a 30cm ruler, 1 metre wide ruler or 1 metre thin ruler. Students rolled their potato across the ruler and took a measurement from the centimetre marker that the potato fell off at. Each Potato had multiple turns on each ruler.)

On Day 2 Spudletes competed in the Archery event. Spudletes attempted to collect as many points as possible to become the overall winner. (What this looked like: Students had 2 different mats on the floor with numbers. Students rolled their potatoes onto the mat adding the score it landed on to their score sheet. Students had 10 attempts and added all 10 scores to find a total).

On Day 3, Spudletes tackled weightlifting! How strong are we? Spudletes attempted to lift as many weights as possible before dropping them. (What this looked like: students attempted to pile as many fruit loops as possible on top of their potato. Students had 3 attempts)

Spudletes have all built their own Bobsleigh and are looking forward to competing in the Bobsleigh event on Day 4. Other events to look forward to are Diving and Canoe Slalom. Who will be our overall winner? Check back on Instagram to see our results!!!!! Students utilised their creative arts abilities during our Potato Olympics to design and decorate potatos, including a flag for their made-up country and a uniform for their teams. Students turned a simple box into an apartment for our athlete village. Each event was a mathematical activity, ranging from measuring length (how far across the beam can a potato get?), volume (how much water was displaced?) addition (how many points did the potato get?) and time (how long did the potato take?). These scores were then analysed using graphs and statistical analysis to determine the overall winners for each events and the overall Olympic Champions! Students utilised their writing skills through creating backstories detailing their Spudletes early life, achievements and challenges. We have had a blast with these activities and can't wait to finish our events and find our Olympic Champions!

For now, our Spudletes are resting up at the Olympic Village...
