From the Principal

Hi all,

Term 3 has started really well and already we are in the midst of things and busy as ever! For this newsletter please take the time to read this message regarding our Reading priority:

Reading

At Nuriootpa Primary School, we are placing a strong focus on reading, as it is the foundation for learning across all subjects and an essential skill for lifelong success. In classes, we have been working hard on spelling and phonics and as a result we have seen significant improvements in students' accuracy when reading, which is wonderful to observe. However, in order to continue progressing, it is crucial that we focus on developing greater fluency in reading. Fluency—the ability to read smoothly with intonation and expression — comes with frequent practice and builds confidence.

To support this goal, our classrooms engage in a variety of reading activities—ranging from teacher-led reading sessions to independent reading time, book discussions, and more. Our aim is to not only strengthen reading skills but also to inspire students to become confident, enthusiastic readers.

We would greatly appreciate your partnership in this effort. Here are a few simple ways you can support your child’s reading at home:

  • Read together daily, even if just for 10–15 minutes, or for older children, have the expectation that students will complete their 10 – 15 minutes of reading per night.
  • Encourage fluency by having your child read aloud to you. Repeated reading of the same book or passage can help build confidence and speed.
  • Talk about books your child is reading—ask questions, make predictions, and share your own thoughts.
  • Make reading a routine, such as part of bedtime or quiet time.
  • Visit the library or explore online resources for new books your child might enjoy.

Every bit of support at home makes a big difference and we would really appreciate your support!

If you have any questions or would like recommendations for age-appropriate books, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education.

Why do we need to learn that?

It’s interesting when talking to students about learning, and they make comments around ‘why do we need to learn this?’ There are often areas of mathematics that students don’t see a great deal of value in, although there are many essential reasons for learning maths.

Problem-Solving Skills: Mathematics enhances critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. It teaches you how to approach complex problems, break them down into manageable parts, and find logical solutions.

Everyday Applications: Maths is used in everyday activities such as budgeting, cooking, shopping, and home improvement. Understanding maths helps you make informed decisions in daily life.

Career Opportunities: Many careers require a strong foundation in mathematics, including engineering, finance, technology, and science. Maths skills can open doors to a wide range of job opportunities.

Technological Advancement: In our increasingly digital world, maths is crucial for understanding and developing new technologies. It is the foundation of computer science, data analysis, and artificial intelligence.

Logical Reasoning: Mathematics promotes logical reasoning and analytical thinking. It helps you understand patterns, structures, and relationships, which are valuable in various fields.

Cultural Appreciation Mathematics has a rich history and is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries. It contributes to our understanding of the world and human achievement.   Scientific Understanding: Maths is the language of science. It is essential for understanding scientific concepts and conducting research in fields like physics, chemistry, and biology.

Overall, learning mathematics equips you with essential skills and knowledge that are valuable in both personal and professional life, and it can be fun!

School Drop-Off and Student Anxiety

Many children experience anxiety at school drop-off from time to time, especially in the early years or during times of change. Some common reasons include:

  • Separation anxiety – Worry about leaving a parent or carer.
  • Fear of the unknown – Concerns about lessons, routines, or new teachers.
  • Social anxiety – Nervousness about friendships or being embarrassed.
  • Change in environment – Moving from home to a busy classroom.
  • Past experiences – Bullying, learning struggles, or feeling left out.

Signs of Anxiety at Drop-Off:

  • Emotional signs: crying, clinginess, tantrums, repeated reassurance-seeking.
  • Physical signs: headaches, stomach aches, feeling “sick” most mornings.
  • Behavioural signs: refusing to get dressed, dragging out routines, school refusal.
  • At school: difficulty settling, withdrawal, or needing extra reassurance.

How to help your child:

  • Keep routines predictable – Calm, consistent mornings reduce stress.
  • Prepare the night before – Pack bags, lay out clothes, and discuss the next day.
  • Keep goodbyes short and positive – A quick hug and reassurance, then leave promptly.
  • Model confidence – Show calmness and optimism; children notice tone and body language.
  • Encourage independence – Let your child carry their bag and walk to the classroom.
  • Highlight positives – Remind them of friends, favourite activities, or fun parts of the day.
  • Practice coping skills – Breathing exercises, positive self-talk, or carrying a small comfort item in their pocket.

How we can support:

If anxiety continues, we are here to help:

  • Classroom Teacher – Observes patterns, trials strategies, and keeps parents informed.
  • School Wellbeing Staff – Provides emotional support, coping strategies, or small group programs.
  • Leadership Team – Helps develop personalised support plans and liaises with outside services if needed.
  • Student Support Plans – Written strategies such as safe spaces, check-in routines, and agreed roles for staff, parents, and students.

Drop-off anxiety is common and usually short-term. With consistent routines, supportive strategies at home and school, and clear communication, most children gain confidence and begin the day successfully. For ongoing difficulties, schools and families can work together—and involve professionals if needed—to ensure every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.

English with Mr. Norton

English with Mr. Norton

This term in English, our Year 5/6 class has been working on creating advertisements with Mr Norton. Our goal was to promote something important – our school! We’ve been learning how to use persuasive language, catchy slogans, and strong visuals to convince others why our school, is the best place to learn and grow.

As part of the project, we brainstormed all the things that make NPS special. Some of the highlights we came up with include:

  • Our friendly and supportive teachers

  • A safe and welcoming school community

  • Fun and engaging learning experiences

  • Exciting programs like sport, music, and excursions

  • Great facilities and beautiful outdoor spaces

  • Opportunities for leadership and student voice

Using these ideas, we each created our own advertisements to show what we love most about NPS and why others should join our amazing school. It’s been a fun and creative way to combine writing skills with real-world communication!

School photos can still be ordered until August 19th

Volunteer at NPS

Parent Volunteers

If you are able, Nuriootpa Primary welcomes any parents and carers who would like  to volunteer.  Parent and Carer Volunteers are a valued support base for our school, assisting staff to provide  a range of high quality opportunities to promote the learning, wellbeing and growth of students.

Some ways you can be involved may include:

·       Listen to Students read

·       Assistance on excursions and Camps

·       Helping out at School Events (eg Christmas Concert, Sports day and SAPSASA)

If you are interested in supporting the school in either of these,  please contact the Front Office and speak to Karen Brook on 8562 1040 to book in for an information night to be held early next term.

Please note: All volunteers need  a  WWCC (Working with Children Check) and RHAN (Responding to Harm and Neglect).  The School will support interested people in gaining these.
