PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

High Potential & Gifted Program

On Thursday morning, the High Potential and Gifted (HP&G) team met to reflect on current initiatives being implemented across the school. We were delighted to have Ms Sarah Williams, Engagement, Lead Advisor with the Department working with us and photographed here with Assistant Principal, Leigh Russ.

New Plan for NSW Public Education

The NSW Department of Education is developing a

new plan for NSW public education and wants to hear from parents, carers, and the community on this important work. The plan was discussed at our recent P&C meeting, but we also invite feedback on the draft plan by 25 August. The future of our children is at the core of the new plan.

Curriculum Planning Days

On Wednesday this week, teachers of Year 1 & 2 classes met to plan the ongoing implementation of the new curriculum led by Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction Beck Cantlay and Assistant Principal Koula Mavrakis. This a such an important time for stage teams to come together to plan the sequencing of units of learning and the best pedagogies to support students. Casual teachers were employed to continue with class programs.

Returning in 2024 survey

As we begin our planning for next year, we ask that families return the Skoolbytes survey sent home recently indicating if your children will be returning to the school in 2024.  This is essential information for us as we look to form classes in the coming weeks.

Parent Mathematics Workshop

Anita Chin is a leading expert in primary mathematics and is hosting a workshop for parents covering: the new Mathematics curriculum, the importance of number talks, mathematical language and working mathematically.

The free workshop will be held in the school hall on Wednesday 16 August 2023 from 2:15pm - 3:15pm with registration from 2:00pm. As we now have over 120 parents attending, bookings are essential. Please RSVP via the link emailed to all parents via school bytes.

Performance Tickets

The cost of  tickets for the term 3 performances will be $5.00 each.  The tickets will be booked online via trybooking. We are planning to release tickets for these end of term performances in the week beginning 21 August. In the initial round, two tickets will be allocated for each student.  If tickets are not sold, further tickets will be released. Parents are asked to only purchase 2 tickets per performance so that all families will be able to attend.  Further information will be sent out next week.

Spring Fete – A Time for Memories

As you know, our lives are built on memories. For our children they will remember events like the P&C Fete, and look back with fondness of the great time they enjoyed with family and friends. I would like to encourage all of our Drummoyne families to join us for this very special community event on Sunday 27th August. If you would like to volunteer on the day or on Saturday for setting up, please register on the P&C volunteer’s site: https://signup.zone/dps-carnival

The Fete is coming!

On Sunday 27 August we are going to need everyone to pitch in to make our fete the fun community event we want it to be and hopefully raise some money for the school as well.

Please sign up to help on a stall or to set up or clean up. We still need some volunteers for short and fun shifts on a variety of stalls. Please bring your friends and do it together!

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office

RAT kits are available from the school office for all families.

For continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind families that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

3-6 Mathematics Syllabus Professional Learning

Drummoyne staff have been completing professional learning on the 3-6 mathematics syllabus to help with planning and preparation for next year.

Have you ever wondered about the difference between the syllabus and the curriculum?

Here’s a link to a parent friendly video to help you better understand these as we prepare for K-6 mandated new mathematics and English syllabus within the Department of Education’s curriculum reform.

GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.
