Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 13 December 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

2025 Wrap-up

As we wrap up the year, it has been wonderful to see so many parents joining us at our Presentation Day assemblies to celebrate the achievements and successes of our students.

2024 has been a year of significant change for Drummoyne Public School, marked by my first year as principal. It has been a privilege to lead this incredible school community. Through new initiatives, fresh opportunities, as well as some challenges, the strength of our school community has shone brightly. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our families for their unwavering support of the school, our staff and myself.

Building and nurturing our community has remained a key focus throughout the year. We have also continued to advance our Reconciliation Action Plan and Aboriginal education initiatives, deepening our collective understanding and commitment to cultural inclusion and respect.

Looking ahead to 2025, I am excited about what the new year will bring, with many fresh ideas, innovations and chances to further enrich the educational experiences on offer for your children at Drummoyne.

Staffing Update

In addition to farewelling our Deputy Principal, Dianne Colb, this year, we will also be saying goodbye to two long-term and highly-valued members of our staff, Belinda Richmond and Belinda Shine. Belinda Richmond will be retiring after a remarkable career dedicated to teaching and shaping the lives of countless DPS students and Belinda Shine has been successful in securing a transfer to Ngarala PS in Epping, a move that will bring her closer to home. Both Belindas have contributed immensely to the fabric of our school community over many years, inspiring countless students and colleagues alike with their dedication and professionalism. They will be deeply missed by all of us at Drummoyne Public School.

2025 Start Dates

A reminder that, as a result of the new Teachers Award in NSW 2025 - 2027, there has been an important change to the 2025 school calendar. From next year, there will be changes to the structure of school development days across NSW schools. The main change will occur at the beginning of the year as there will be four school development days at the beginning of Term 1 with all students (including Kindergarten) starting on THURSDAY 6th February 2025.

2025 School Development Days

Term 1: Friday 31 January to Wednesday 5 February. Students start on THURSDAY 6/2/25

Term 2: Monday 28 April and Tuesday 29 April. Students start on WEDNESDAY 30/4/25

Term 3: Monday 21 July. Students start on TUESDAY 22/7/25

Term 4: Monday 13 October. Students start on TUESDAY 14/10/25

Semester 2 Reports

Our Semester 2 Reports have been emailed to families this afternoon. We have made substantial changes to these reports in response to the feedback we received from parents following the Semester 1 report survey. These updates aim to provide clearer, more comprehensive insights into student academic progress as well as social growth.

On behalf of the staff at Drummoyne PS, I wish you all a safe and joyful holiday season. To the families who are leaving our school this year, thank you for your contribution and support. To those of you who will be back with us, I look forward to welcoming you back in the new year.

Regards,

John Nguyen

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Whooping cough (pertussis)

NSW Health has asked schools to share this advice with families and remind you to be aware of the symptoms of whooping cough (pertussis), as the number of cases in NSW continues to rise.

The highest rates are seen in school-aged children aged 5 to 16 years.

Whooping cough starts like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, a mild fever and an occasional cough. Coughing bouts can worsen and be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a “whooping” sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night.

Children and adults may just have a mild cough that doesn't go away. In adults the cough commonly lasts 5–7 weeks, sometimes longer.

For more information go to: Public Health Alert - Whooping Cough

Lost Property

There are many unnamed lunchboxes, drink bottles, hats, jumpers and jackets in lost property so if your child has lost anything this term, please check the lost property baskets next week.

All school items left at the end of Wednesday 18 December will be washed then added to the second hand uniform pool. All non school uniform items and lunch boxes etc will be donated to charity.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Applications are now open for 2025 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel. Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card.
