Term 3 Week 8 Newsletter - Friday 8 September 2023

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Enriching Lives and Learning

Schools play a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development and wellbeing of children. Every week we aim to provide opportunities that will develop the capacity of our students to reach their potential in these areas. This was evident in:

  • the visit by author Tori Parry to Stage 3;
  • activities in classrooms to acknowledge Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday;
  • the overnight excursion to Stanwell Tops for Year 4 students;
  • Zing Activ performing arts on Wednesday and Thursday as the students rehearse for the upcoming productions.

Thank you to every family for your strong support of the school throughout the term to enable us to enrich the lives and learning of our young people.

Generous Support by P&C

In recent weeks, the P&C has again funded some significant purchases for the school including: laptops for the Community Languages program, decodable readers online and decodable texts,  and new flag poles along Thompson Street for ANZAC Day assemblies, Remembrance Day and other special events. This is in addition to the funding for the interactive whiteboards in all classrooms provided earlier in the year. I would like to sincerely thank the P&C for their ongoing support of the school and to every family that has supported P&C fundraising activities this term such as the Spring Fete.

School Supervision Plan

Our School Supervision Plan provides for the supervision of students half an hour before school (ie. from 8.50am), at lunch and recess times and until 3.20pm in the afternoon. The plan is developed to identify reasonably foreseeable risks and put in place arrangements that are to protect students against injury and harm. From 3.20pm there is no teacher supervision of playgrounds. This includes the infant's adventure playground and we ask that children and siblings not use the equipment after school. Our message to students is that 'this is waiting time, not a playing time'. Thank you for helping us to keep children safe during afternoon dismissal.

Parent Interaction with Other Students

From time to time, conflict may arise between families of the school as a result of an incident which has taken place at the school. Under no circumstances are parents to speak to the children from another family to address a concern or to reprimand another student of the school. In this situation, parents are asked to refer the matter to the executive who will investigate what has taken place and resolve the conflict fairly and in the best interests of both children.

Injuries to Students

To enable us to support the safe return to school of students who have injured themselves at home, at weekend sport or at school, parents are asked to please share a medical certificate with us that indicates any restrictions on activities allowed when returning to school.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Hats

With warmer months approaching and increased risk of the damaging effects of UV radiation, please ensure that your child comes to school each day wearing their school hat. Each day they play outside at recess and lunch, often learn outdoors and participate in PE and sport on a weekly basis in the sun.

Playground after school

We ask that all parents and carers depart the school site as soon as the students are dismissed from the classroom at 3.20pm. Supervision is not provided on the playground at this time.

Thank you for your support in exiting the playground promptly after collecting your children.

Year 4 Overnight Camp to Stanwell Tops

Earlier this week our Year 4 students attended their first overnight camp.  The weather was glorious, the activities engaging and personally challenging and the students were exceptional in every way.

Students enjoyed new relationships and had time to deepen existing friendships. The program allowed structured activity time and some downtime for students to enjoy the grounds and team activities. We were so proud of each and every one of our Year 4 cohort. The lessons learnt were invaluable and will assist them now and on future overnight excursions. It was wonderful to see students encouraging others and developing new skills.

Thank you parents for your support in preparing our students for the camp experience. Thank you also to our staff namely Ashlee Ward, James Roche, Kathy Xenos and Deb Knight for their strong commitment to the school and giving up the comforts of home and family to support our students.

Tournament of Minds competition

On Sunday the 27th of August, our ToM team went to Waitara Public School to compete in the regional Tournament of Minds competition.

Over the past 6 weeks, the team created a ten-minute performance about Banksy’s artwork ‘Show me the Monet’ and the importance of stopping pollution. Then they performed this in front of judges and their families.

The team has worked tirelessly, giving up many mornings before school, lunches and recesses to rehearse.

Unfortunately, we did not win, but we received some very positive feedback from the judges! A big congratulations to Theodora Bartola, Keira Butler, Riviera Harris, Alex McDonald, Izzy Soh, Zara Youhana and Tahlia Zagarella. Well done girls!

New Sport House names announced

Warimi (hello in Sydney Language)

We are pleased to share that DPS has new sports house names. A thorough and lengthy process has been undertaken in order to get us to where we are today. Consultation has been undertaken with staff, SRC, P&C, our Aboriginal Liaison Officer and assistance from Rhoie Koroinivalu - a Nagarigu/Darkinjung woman and teacher mentor from Five Dock PS.

Our new house names are in The Sydney Language which is the Aboriginal language spoken by the Wangal people on the land in which our school stands. Through conversations and consultation, we approached change with the view that we would like our new house names to reflect and deepen our community's connection to Country.

Our new house names are:

Warada - (waratah, colour red)

Guwing - (sun, colour yellow)

Daramu - (tree, colour green)

Badu - (water, colour blue)

The SRC will be presenting information to students at K-2 and 3-6 assembly early next term. We are also in the process of sourcing a Wangal artist for us to work with to design new house logos.
