Eastlakes Edition

Term 1 Week 9

Acknowledgement to Country

On behalf of the students, teachers and parents of Eastlakes Public School, we would like to pay our respects and acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, past, present and future who have the first connection to this land.

We are thankful for the Gadigal and Kameygal clans for taking care of the land, sky and waterways on which we learn and play today.

Together we will rise to the challenge and be respectful andresponsible to care for our country.

Always was, always will be Aboriginal land

From the Principal

The last couple of weeks have been very busy here at Eastlakes PS.

NAPLAN Success for Year 3 and 5: Congratulations to our fantastic Year 3 and 5 students for completing their NAPLAN assessments with confidence and determination!  We're proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing their continued growth and progress throughout the year.

Smooth Migration to SENTRAL Finance: I am happy to announce the successful migration of our finance system to SENTRAL! This transition marks a significant milestone for our school, streamlining administrative processes and enhancing efficiency. A huge thank you to our dedicated office staff, Mrs Peralta and Mrs Massey for their diligence and hard work in ensuring a seamless transition.

UNSW Students: We're grateful for the invaluable support provided by UNSW students in our classrooms. They have been in our school every Tuesday for the last few weeks. Their enthusiasm has enriched our learning environment, providing additional assistance to both students and teachers alike.

Gymnastics Program Update: With just one week to go, our gymnastics program is in full swing! Our students have been flipping, tumbling, and balancing their way through this exciting program with lots of energy and  making progress and growing in confidence each week.

Successful Easter Hat Parade: A round of applause for our creative and talented students, who participated in our hugely successful Easter Hat Parade! It was so wonderful to see so many parents, carers and friends join us for the hat parade. The school was abuzz with excitement as students showcased their beautifully decorated hats, answered interesting trivia questions, did great hip hop dancing and lots of raffle prizes were won. It was a happy celebration of creativity, teamwork, and school spirit!  Thanks to Ms Psarras for her organisation and to our school leaders for hosting. A special thank you to all the parents and carers who donated items for the raffle and to one of the local supermarkets, Woolworths Eastlakes for donating some special prizes. Enjoy the photos below.

EPS P&C: Thanks to all the parents and carers who attended the P&C  Information evening yesterday. It was decided that the Annual General Meeting will be held next Wednesday April 3 at 5.30pm to elect P&C Officers. Everyone is welcome.

Farewell and thank you: Last week we said farewell to one our school learning support officers, Ms Serena Prelec, who has been part of the Eastlakes PS family for the last few years. Ms Serena supported students across the school as well as teachers and the office staff. She will be missed by all and we thank her for the service she has provided to the Eastlakes school community. We wish her all the very best on her life's next adventure and hope to see her soon again.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our school.

A very Happy Easter to all families celebrating this long weekend.

RIBBON CUTTING: 21I Relaunches Class Book Corner In keeping with 21I's focus on reading and enjoying books, the book corner was relaunched on Tuesday of Week 8. In preparation, crafty students created a ribbon, artworks and reorganised the facility's existing shelves. The occasion was well attended by students and visiting teachers. Mrs Sanders, the newly appointed EPS Library Teacher gave a speech to the eager crowd on the importance of reading and enjoying books. The honour of cutting the ribbon and declaring the book corner open was  bestowed upon Ms Afleck, who, as a dedicated Learning and Support Teacher, is a keen advocate of  literacy skill development.  Ms Affleck told attendees " I am thrilled to announce the relaunch of 21I's beloved classroom reading corner! I believe I speak for all teachers when I stress the immense value of fostering a culture of reading in our school community."  Class teacher, Miss Stanfield added later, "With this relaunch, we aim to ignite the joy and excitement of exploring new worlds through the magic of books."

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Fresh New Look: Our reading corner has undergone a makeover! With vibrant colors, cozy seating and whimsical decorations (the class-made Chinese Dragon art is a must-see!) the space has been transformed into a welcoming oasis for book lovers of all ages. A small, rotating exhibition of student artworks is displayed on the wall.
  • Student Directed and Diverse Book Selection: Each week, when visiting the main school library, students will  borrow and return one book for the class library. This will ensure that all students will find something to their taste amongst the shelves. From timeless classics to contemporary bestsellers, our collection features a wide range of genres and themes to cater to diverse interests and reading levels. Whether students crave comedy, fantasy, non-fiction, or poetry, there's something for everyone to discover.
  • Engaging Activities: In addition to individual reading experiences, our book corner will host an initiative to share up to six books a day, as a class.  Students can look forward to developing a rich vocabulary and understanding of the world around us, as they listen to Miss Stanfield read from a specially curated selection of quality literature.
  • Term 2 Literacy Group Learning: When reading group activities begin in earnest next term, one of the activities that students will participate in regularly throughout the week will be a small group visit to the reading corner. They will be able to peruse their own book choices and share those of their peers. Reading with a buddy is a great way to discover more about your friends and their interests!

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:

  • Donate Books: Have gently used books gathering dust on your shelves? Consider donating them to our book corner to enrich our collection and inspire young minds.Volunteer: Are you passionate about literacy and learning? Sign up to volunteer as a parent-helper in our reading group activities in Term 2. A schedule will be issued at the beginning of the term.Spread the Word: Share this article with Stage 1 students to demonstrate the value that we, as a community place on reading. Share the books that students bring home from school, both readers and library books. Share books of any genre, any language, at playtime, dinnertime, bathtime....any time!
