Welcome to 2026

A big warm welcome back to everyone to a brand-new year, special welcome to all new students, families and staff who have now become part of the Miles SHS community. A special warm welcome to our incoming Year 7 students who have settled into life at high school like pros. The 2026 school year has already started with great enthusiasm and clear evidence of students engaging and achieving success every minute of every day.

New Staff to Miles State High School

I want to congratulate the families of every student as you have instilled the value and importance of making new people feel welcome with a simple smile and a warm hello. I know our new students, their families and staff have felt truly welcomed. By now new names of school staff have been coming home. Please view our staff page and contact details included in this newsletter.

Congratulations to 2025 Year 12 Graduates

Miles SHS has a proud history of exceptional senior outcomes. The outcomes of the 2025 Year 12 graduates are no different.

  • 100% of students enrolled in QLD Certificate of Education (QCE) gained their QCE.
  • 100% of students enrolled in Qld Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA) gained their QCIA.
  • 100% of students exited with a National Vocational Certificate (VET) -in many cases more than 1 VET Certificate.
  • 100% of students who put in an application for university entrance received and offer of their choice.

Developing our Strategic Direction for 2026-2029

Over the end of last year and the last two weeks our staff and students have engaged in sharing ideas for a new Miles SHS Vision Statement for our school that will lay the foundations for the next 5 years.

What is a School Vision?

A school organizational vision outlines and defines the school’s core purpose, long-term goals, and shared values. It acts as a guiding, forward focused, and inspiring statement that aligns staff, students, and community to improve student outcomes, culture, and engagement.

We want your input.

In order to have a community wide impact, all members of our school community need their voice included in the statement.

Over the next weeks we will be sending out a survey to our parent/carer and community partners seeking your input on a vision of our school.

I look forward to collaborating with our school community to create our schools vision statement that represents all our beliefs of what our school should be driving towards.

Take care.

Our first newsletter for 2026

Welcome back to all our returning students and a special welcome to our Yr 7 cohort and new students that have join us this year.  Walking around the school, sitting in on classes and watching the students interact with their teachers has been very uplifting so far this year.

The anxious faces of Day One to now is a kindly reminder of the importance of providing a safe and engaging environment for all students.  I know the Leadership team and staff are all united to ensure the students have access to curriculum and wellbeing.  Congratulations to students who have been actively engaged in their lessons over the first two weeks and building relationships with new friends and their teachers.  It excites me to see the general respect shown by everyone.

The positive phone calls home to parents and receiving their support, even when the topic has not always been favourable has been astounding.

Upcoming events

We have some major events coming up on our calendar and it would be terrific to see our students and families in attendance.

Thursday 12th February – 2026 Investiture and Semester Two 202 Academic Awards ceremony.

Monday 16th February – 2026 Immunisation for our Yr 7 and 10 students.

Monday 23rd February – School Photos.

Policy and Procedures

Monday is our formal uniform day, and it is important that students follow our uniform expectations and policy.  If you are unable to purchase the formal uniform from ‘Abraham’s’, please contact our main office, so we have it on record.  Jewellery policy is also important for WHS, and if your child fails to follow the policy, they will not be able to participate in practical subjects.  Please refer to your student diary if you are unsure of the expectations or contact the main office to make an appointment.

Have a great fortnight.

From Head of Curriculum

Hi all and welcome back to 2026. We are looking forward to another fantastic year where students are learning and improving themselves. We are gearing up for another busy term with Sport coming out our ears, Investiture, Academic and Attendance awards, NAPLAN for year 7 and 9 occurring in week 7-8 (same week as the Miles Show), Swimming and Cross Country and this is just the highlights. Please be paying attention to the calendar located on the website and in the newsletter to make sure you are getting all your dates correct.

With the Investiture and awards this week, all students receiving an award should have received a letter giving all the key details for you to attend the Awards Ceremony. But for your information the ceremony will be occurring on Thursday at 9:00am in the MPA. Parents and carers are welcome to be a part of the action.

You will soon be receiving the subject placemats so you know what your student will be learning. Different from last year, the subject planners will be happening through QParents, which is the online app. This will enable you to digitally follow the assessment dates for your student/s.

We are excited again to be running Homework Club for busy families. This will be starting up next week (week 3) on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. To get your student involved have them collect a form from student services and return this. You will also then need to book them into the program through SOBS (the online booking program).

A massive thank you to all the students and parents who have been following the processes for subject selection swaps. Students in years 9-12 should now be in the subjects that they intend to complete for the year. If you or your student is worried about their subject or their pathway, please see Mr Kuhl early this week. Deadlines are rapidly approaching and at the end of this week students will not be able to change their electives.

Lastly, make sure you are following the communication flowchart if you have any questions or issues that are coming up. This enables you to get the best answer in the shortest about of time. Thanks for those who have already reached out. I am looking forward to another great year!

Introducing the Wellbeing Engagement and Support Team (WEST)

At Miles State High School, student wellbeing is everyone’s business. To ensure our students feel supported, connected and ready to learn, we are proud to introduce our Wellbeing Engagement and Support Team (WEST)

WEST is a multidisciplinary team of professionals who work together to support students’ wellbeing, engagement, attendance, behaviour and future pathways. Whether a student needs someone to talk to, support to stay engaged at school, help with health concerns or guidance for their future, WEST is here to help.

What does WEST do?

The WEST team provides:

  • Daily wellbeing and engagement support
  • Counselling and psychoeducational assessment
  • Attendance and behaviour support
  • Health and youth services
  • Career and pathway planning
  • Lunch-time programs and positive engagement activities
  • Strong links between school, families and community services

How do students book a meeting?

Students can self-refer at any time:

  • Report to the FLEXI Centre
  • Ask to book a meeting with the relevant WEST staff member
  • Students will then be notified of a time when that staff member will contact them
  • Parents/carers are also welcome to make contact through their students care teacher.

You can speak with a trained professional by phone or webchat (6am-midnight), seven days a week.

An online bullying support forum is also available. This is a safe, moderated space to connect with others, ask questions, and share experiences.

    Term 1 2026

    HPE with Miss Fowkes

2026 has kicked off with a busy start for sport! This year Miles & District are running Cluster days to support students and parents with travel and time away from school. On Tuesday the 10th we have a number of students from Miles State High School attending the Touch and Rugby League Miles & District trials. We wish those students good luck.

This term, our year 7 students are learning about the benefits of physical activity and how it supports their fitness, wellbeing and relationships. They are also learning about bullying situations which includes being a positive bystander and how to cope when you’re a victim of bullying.

Our year 9/10 students are refining and evaluating their skills and performance in a range of sports. For theory, they are learning about stereotypes and gendered violence in Australia and how they impact identities and relationships.

Sport and Recreation students this term are designing, implementing and evaluating a 12-week fitness program. The focus of their fitness program is strength training.
