Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM ONE WEEK FOUR

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

Rozelle has been a very busy place these past few weeks and it’s hard to believe we have reached Week Four. Our class and specialist learning programs are up and running including library, music, visual arts, chess, band, learning support and extension programs. I have visited many of the classrooms and I can report a positive atmosphere with students eagerly participating in discussions and activities, settled in their classes and school routines.

Our classroom teachers have been facilitating information sessions for parents over the last two weeks. I hope you found the presentation informative and that we provided valuable insights into our educational approach, curriculum updates, and strategies for supporting your child’s learning at home. If you were unable to attend, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher for any information you have missed. Thank you to all our families who were able to attend and for the overwhelmingly positive feedback.

On Wednesday evening, it was great to have the first P&C meeting of the year. Last year the P&C worked hard to lodge a DA into council for approval to build a shade structure over the basketball court. We have confirmation from the schools Asset team that the town planner confirmed;

• Referrals have now been received.

• Notification resulted in no submissions.

Assessment is underway, with draft conditions to be provided in early March.

Our P&C meet on Wednesday evenings, twice a term and new faces are always welcome to attend. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 13 March.

Happy Lunar New Year to families in our community who may be celebrating the Lunar or Chinese New Year. This is the year of the Dragon and the element is wood. Our pre-school and some of our classes have been learning about the Luna New Year, its symbols and the 12 animals used to represent the years. I wish all our families ‘xin nian.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

One event that required a great deal of organisation was our swimming carnival which took place last Wednesday. The weather was spectacular this year and participation was exceptionally high. I would like to congratulate all students for their exemplary behaviour and cooperation at the pool. We were very fortunate to have quite a few parent volunteers to support the smooth running of the events and the spectators who attended enjoyed a beautiful day out. The swimming carnival was certainly a big day for all staff who worked tirelessly to ensure student safety and wellbeing. There were some great results too! Ms Gubb and Ms Singelton, the carnival coordinators will announce in the coming days, the zone swimming team who will represent Rozelle at the upcoming carnival on Wednesday 6 March.

Student Wellbeing

WELLBEING

All students continued to participate in lessons this week revising and relearning our school rules. This week primary students focused on the blue HIP key 'Respect Yourself'. Students discussed the ways that we can show respect to ourselves through integrity, being polite and caring for others. Students K-2 discussed the character, the 'Well-Mannered Whale' who is always polite, and strives to be the best version of themselves .  Students discussed; why this rule is important and how this rule helps to make themselves and others feel good.

SCRIPTURE

Scripture will begin in Week 6. At our school students can attend Ethics, Catholic, Anglican or non-scripture classes. Please let your child's teacher know if there are any changes. When a teacher is unavailable to teach Ethics, students will attend non-scripture where they can be supervised by a teacher.

NAPLAN 2024

NAPLAN will be held from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March.

Students in Year 3 and 5 will participate in four NAPLAN tests:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar, punctuation)
  • Numeracy

All schools in NSW undertake NAPLAN online. However, Year 3 students do the writing tests on paper. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the format of tests before the NAPLAN test window.

The testing schedule and more detailed information will be sent out to Year 3 and 5 parents next week.
