Newsletter: Term 1 Issue 1

Principal's Message

Welcome to our 2026 school year!

Wow, how is it that we are already at the end of week 4. I really do not know where the last 4 weeks went. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all families who have returned to Newman Primary School this year. For those of you who are new to our school, a very big "Welcome" to each and every one of you. We hope that your child/children have settled and made some wonderful friends already.

It is always so heart-warming to see students have settled in extremely well as they adapt to their new class, new friends and a brand-new year. I would like to acknowledge the students and staff for their continued focus on a positive learning environment where all our students are engaged and participating.

We would like to welcome Ms Emma Cook back to the NPS team. Ms Cook is teaching in the Year 5/6 classroom. Ms Amanda Hames has also joined our team and is working full time in the Kindergarten classroom. Ms Rachel Ward who is with the flying squad, is joining us here in Newman for 4 weeks teaching The Arts.

Curriculum 2026

Our staff will continue to deliver high quality curriculum to students as we work towards our vision for all students at Newman Primary School.

Newman Primary School fosters resilient learners, embraces diversity and cultivates a collaborative school community for lifelong learning and personal growth.

In our 2024 - 2026 Business Plan, the focus areas are Growth for Students: Growth for Staff and Growth for Community Partnerships.

The detailed operational planning reflects our intention to continue with quality programs. This year will see 2 new mathematics programs implemented across our school. PP – Year 2: focussing on Explicit Maths Program and our Year 3 - Year 6 students: focusing on Prime Maths. Exciting times ahead for teachers and students!

If you ever need further clarification on classroom information or would like to find out how your child has settled into their new school year, the classroom teacher is always the first person you should see. Make yourself known to them. Our priority is always your child and in developing a close relationship with our school community where we all work together to provide the best educational opportunities for all children at Newman Primary School.

If further clarification is needed or you would like to discuss other areas, please feel free to make an appointment to see me either before, during or after school by ringing our front office.

Within the first 4 weeks we have had many activities taking place such as assemblies; Earbus; Hanrine Simile (Dentist) and Creative Bytes - working on coding. Coming up very quickly are swimming lessons for our students in Years 2, 4 and 6. These begin in week 6.

NAPLAN commences in week 6 for our students in Years 3 and 5. Parents are asked not to put pressure on your child. It is a series of tests that they will undertake. I have told the students to do their best and if they can say they did - what else can we ask for? Parents if you are discussing NAPLAN at home, please keep the conversations positive.

P&C - I would like to say thank you to the outgoing 2025 committee. A very special thanks the JD Muller who was President.

The P&C have met this year, and we now have a new committee. Congratulations to President - Amanda Kyngdon; Vice President - Sascha Fraser; Secretary - Denise Humphries and Treasurer - Kayla Elliott. If any parents would like to join the P&C, please speak with one of the committee members or alternatively ring the front office and the ladies will advise you who to get in contact with.

School Board - I look forward to our first School Board meeting; however, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work our School Board has completed in 2025 with JD Muller as Chairperson. Our school community celebrates the contributions of all Board members and deeply thanks them for their contributions.

I look forward to working with all staff, students, parents and the wider Newman Community throughout the year.

Positive Behaviour Support

Welcome to the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) section of the newsletter! This year, we are placing a big focus on ensuring that parents and community members are well-informed about our fortnightly expectations and the comings and goings of how Positive Behaviour Support is used within our school.

Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS), is built around three core values:

  • Be Responsible (orange token)
  • Show Respect (purple token)
  • Strive for Success (yellow token)

As of the end of Week Two, our school has earned a total of 1169 tokens:

  • Be Responsible: 421
  • Show Respect: 200
  • Strive for Success: 548

If you have any questions about Positive Behaviour Support at Newman Primary School, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.

Thanks for your continued support!

Attendance and Absences

Newman Primary School transitioned to a new system, all Attendance SMS messages will now come from a new contact NewmanPS.

The new system will notify parents, guardians, and caregivers of unexplained absences or late arrivals.

The new system started on the 4 June.  It will send parents an SMS on their mobile phone when their child is marked absent without an explanation.

Parents should delete the old Absentee SMS number to avoid confusion.

Parents will get this SMS with the link if their child is marked absent without explanation.  Parents should use this link to add attendance about their child's absence.  Please note that the link will be valid for only 48 hours.  Do not reply to this message via SMS as the school will not receive this.  The school will receive your response via the link provided.  Ensure the phone is connected to an internet data plan or has WIFI access to use the hyperlink.

If your child is absent again without prior explanation, parents will get a new one-time link.

If parents do not use the link provided, they can notify the school of their child's absence via telephone or email (newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au).

If you have any questions regarding the Attendance SMS Communication, please call 9154 3900.
