From the Principal

Hi all,

Welcome and Welcome Back!!

We welcome all the families who are joining us for the first time - see the page below - we welcome Steve Cornish, who joins us as Deputy, and Ben Parkinson who has a 3/4 class, and we welcome back all existing staff, students and families.

Start of the year

We have had a great start to the 2024 school year. Once again we began with a focus on values. Prior to the students arriving we discussed our own values and understanding of the various values we come across.  We then worked with our students on a number of activities to unpack values - what they mean, how important they are to us and how living into our values helps us in our relationships and behaviours. One of the activities that some classes did was watch a clip from Britain's Got Talent and discussed all the values that we could see on show. It's a great clip. I encourage you to have a look and have a chat with your child about it! Here is the link:

We also remind our students of the 3 School expectations which we live by. They are:

Expectation 1: Come to class prepared to learn.

Expectation 2: Everyone has a right to learn.

Expectation 3: Everyone has the right to feel and be safe.

Focusing on values and expectations sets the scene for the year and supports us in our aim of providing a safe and welcoming environment for our students to learn in.

Dress Code

According to Department Policy schools are encouraged to have a dress code as they play an important role in:

·       promoting a positive image of the school

·       creating a sense of identity among students and the community

·       supporting student safety through ease of identification

·       making sure students are dressed appropriately for all school activities.

With this in mind Nuriootpa PS dress code currently states as follows:

The school has a variety of options that can be purchased through the school.

Tops are Royal Blue with a yellow school logo. The Year 7 [ to be changed to 6] students will have the opportunity to purchase a Seniors T-shirt and windcheater.

Bottoms are plain navy/black – can be shorts, 3/4 or long pants but without large logos or stripes. These can be purchased through the school or in commercial outlets.

Denim is not to be worn.

Long sleeved blue or black tops may be worn under short/long sleeved tops or pinafores

Girls may wear a dress (summer), a pinafore (winter), shorts, skorts, pants or blue/black tights.

School hats are to be worn when outside during Terms 1 and 4. These need to be broad brimmed (no less than 7cm wide), bucket hat (school stock) or legionnaire.

Students will be asked to wear safe shoes to school which lace up or sandals which have closed in toes and a strap that supports the ankle.  Where possible, shoes should be in colours that blend with the uniform i.e. white, black, grey, blue or brown (thin bands of florescent colour is acceptable). Failing this, shoes in soft muted colours are acceptable.

Accessories such as scarves may be worn if they are royal blue, black or navy; cardigans - royal blue; hair accessories can be worn but need to be safe and within school colours guidelines.

Only sleepers or stud earrings are to be worn.

PLAIN navy/black beanies can be worn in terms 2 and 3.

Students will be asked to remove items that are

•       Deemed to be a safety risk eg rubber chokers; long, pointy or large earrings, unbreakable chains, bangles

•       Cause distraction eg nail polish, makeup

•       Have offensive or prominent logo

No graffiti is to be written on clothing or hats. Students will be asked to clean or replace items.

From the Deputy Principal

A new school year always brings some excitement and challenges for students, parents and staff. New teachers, classes and friendship groups can all cause some concern for students. These challenges can be increased when starting at a new school. Luckily for the new students at Nuriootpa PS, there is a very warm and welcoming feel to the school, where everyone is made to feel welcome.

My first few weeks at the school have been very positive. I have been very impressed with the attitude of the students in class and the respect they show each other. Teachers are enthusiastic and keen to engage their students in quality teaching and learning experiences, with a strong focus on getting to know the students and their values.

The students have come back very settled and have returned to ‘work mode’ very quickly. It's nice to know that a long break hasn't impacted too much on their ability to engage in learning routines. There are lots of smiles on faces and ‘most’ people look happy to be back. The beginning to this year has been very settled, allowing for teaching and learning programs to begin immediately.

Managing student support needs is a very important part of my role. If you would like to chat further about support needs for your child, please contact the school to organise a time to meet with me. My door is always open and I am keen to talk about how we can help.

Regards Steve

Wellbeing at NPS

From the Pastoral Care Worker...

Hi! My name is Kylie Heinrich and I am the Pastoral Care Worker here at Nuriootpa Primary School.

My role is to walk along side of students and support them with any social and emotional situations or issues that may arise in their time at NPS. I am also here as a person of support for staff, teachers and parents. Please feel free to make contact with me either directly or via the classroom teacher or front office.

Breaky Club & Coffee Club

Our Breaky Club started back this week – Monday and Friday mornings from 8.30am from the Community Centre window. This is very popular with the students – we serve fresh fruit and hot buttered toast to any students that would like to participate (our only requests are that they need to line up and remember their manners when they get to the window!)  Thank you for the funding and food supplies we receive through the Impact Church and the Nuriootpa Uniting Church that help make the breaky club possible.

Coffee Club

Our coffee club also started back in Week 2 for parents and carers of NPS students. This is also in the Community Centre Building – at 9am on Monday mornings – straight after the bell. We have a play area for the toddlers, a feeding/changing station for mums – and best of all free tea and coffee for the parents and carers! All are welcome.

I am in the school on Monday & Friday mornings and can be contacted on kylie.heinrich646@schools.sa.edu.au.

Mobile Phones at NPS

Mobile Phones & Digital devices

In line with the State Government’s ban, students are required to turn off all mobile phones and other personal devices (such as smart watches), or switch them to flight mode, and put them away while at school. At Nuriootpa PS we ask that these devices are handed up to Front Office for safekeeping.

As a reminder, students may only use their personal device if they have received approval from the school to use it for an exempted purpose. Please see the school’s policy for more detail about the circumstances where students may be permitted to use their personal devices.

If you need to get in touch with your child during school hours, please ensure you use the school’s formal communication channels so staff can assist with passing on a message or connecting you with your child. Likewise, we will always contact you directly where there is a need to do so.

Please encourage your child to always speak to a staff member in the first instance if they are feeling unwell or experiencing an issue at school so we can offer appropriate support and follow up. To ensure our duty of care obligations, all instances where a student requires early collection need to be arranged via the school office and using formal sign-out processes.

Thank you to all students who have been making efforts to follow these expectations, and to families for your support with this policy.

While mobile phones have an important place in our society and offer many benefits, they can also put students’ safety and wellbeing at risk when they are used inappropriately. Keeping them off and away during school hours helps us to limit the negative impact from unsafe or inappropriate use.

Having some time away from personal devices each day is also helping to reduce distractions and improve focus in learning time and encourages students to use breaks to engage with other important activities for health, wellbeing, and development including face-to-face connections and physical activity.

More information about the statewide ban, and why it has been put in place, can be found on the Department for Education’s website at: http://phonesoff.sa.gov.au/.
