Principal’s Message – Week 7

Dear Parents and carers,

As we move closer to the end of Term 4, I’d like to acknowledge the many positive moments and contributions that continue to shape our school community.

Farewell to Mr Dan Lyng

This week we farewell Mr Dan Lyng, our Deputy Principal, who has completed his contract with the IEA and will be relocating next week. Mr Lyng’s leadership, professionalism, and care for students and staff have been deeply appreciated. His farewell letter is included in this newsletter. On behalf of the entire school community, I thank Mr Lyng for his excellent contribution and wish him all the best in his next chapter.

Student Conduct on Camps

Last week’s camps to Cairns and New Ireland were a great success. Our students demonstrated outstanding behaviour, teamwork, and school spirit throughout the excursions. Thank you to the staff and parents who supported these trips — your efforts ensured a safe and enriching experience for all.

Careers Week Appreciation

Careers Week in the secondary school provided valuable insights and inspiration for our students. I extend sincere thanks to the teachers who coordinated the program and to the parents and guest speakers who shared their time and expertise. Your involvement made a meaningful impact.

Upcoming Market Day – Saturday 22nd November

A reminder that our annual Market Day will take place next Saturday, 22nd November.. We look forward to welcoming families and community members to this event.

Primary Swimming Carnival

Yesterday’s Primary Swimming Carnival was a great celebration of participation and achievement. Thank you to Coach Carline and Ms Inai for their excellent coordination, and to all staff and families who supported our young swimmers.

Final Weeks of Term

With four busy weeks remaining, our focus remains firmly on teaching and learning in the classroom. I encourage all students to stay engaged, attend regularly, and make the most of every opportunity as we approach the end of the academic year.

Tribute to Our Awesome Deputy Principal, Mr. D. Lyng

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our deputy principal, Mr. D. Lyng, for his time with us and for the many contributions he has made to LIS. We are truly grateful that you became part of our community, and we hope you enjoyed your stay with us.

As much as we would love for you to remain here, we understand that family must come first, and it would not be fair to keep you away from them. Still, we will miss you dearly.

Thank you for introducing the STEM Fair, which inspired us all to love science and the amazing world of technology, art, and mathematics. You also brought us STEPS to Success, showing us how following the IEA Key Outcomes can guide us to become successful learners and responsible citizens.

We are grateful for the knowledge you shared about the Sustainable Development Goals, and we will continue working together to understand each goal and strive to achieve them. You also helped us see how we compare with other international schools through PAT testing data, and we will always remember the joy of the sing-up.

Because of you, we also had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Lyng, and for that we are thankful. Two years may have passed quickly, but in that time you accomplished so much and left a lasting impact on our school.

From all of us at LIS, thank you. We wish you every success in your future endeavors. And as we say here at LIS, we do not say goodbye but lukim yu behain.

Head of Primary Campus Notices

Hello everyone,

Welcome to this week’s edition of Primary News.

Swimming Carnival

Our swimming carnival was a great success, showcasing the skills and enthusiasm of our students.

  • Grades 1–8 took to the pool on Wednesday, impressing us with their energy and determination.
  • Prep students followed on Friday, delighting everyone with their courage and joy in the water.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated swimming coordinators Ms. Inai and Mrs. Danny, and to coach Mrs. Caroline Puamau for their excellent lessons and preparation. Your guidance made this event possible and ensured every student had the chance to showcase their skills.

Primary Disco

Our Primary Disco was a hit in its new time slot, with students from ELC to Grade 6 enjoying a day of music, dancing, and laughter.

A huge thank you to our Grade 8 students for their fantastic effort in organizing the disco, and to our P&F team for providing delicious food and drinks at the stalls.

The students had an amazing time and are already looking forward to the next disco!

LIS WAy Donation

Our primary student leaders are organizing a charity drive to mark Universal Children’s Day. This initiative promotes the “Child to Child” concept—encouraging students to donate items that can benefit other children in need.

This year, all collected items will be donated to Lae Disability Voice of Hope, a local organization supporting children with disabilities. The goal is to share useful items with children in shelter homes and help make a positive impact.

We kindly ask each family to use the LIS WAy guide to prepare a pack of donation and send with your eldest child to school. The items should be packed in a shoe size box or a gift bag.

Please kindly ensure this is send to school on Monday 17th November. All packs will be wrapped and delivered to the children on Friday 21st November.

Market Day

The school together with P&F will be hosting the annual end of year market day on November 22nd. Tables are now available for sale- K50 for a table. You can come by the Primary office to secure a table. We will also have the monster raffle draw. Families have received a ticket book to sell – K2 a ticket. We have a whole pig donated by Pelgens to win along with other donated prizes which includes, shopping voucher, food hampers, etc. We are still open for any more donation towards the monster raffle draw. The more prizes the better.

 UN Assembly

We’re excited to announce our upcoming UN Assembly in celebration of Universal Children's Day! This special event will take place on Friday, 21st November, and we warmly invite our international family to join us in showcasing the rich cultural diversity that makes LIS so unique.

What to Expect:

  • Each class has been assigned a country to study and represent.
  • Students will explore the traditions, customs, and stories of their chosen nation.
  • Teachers will be sending out notes via email and Audiri with more details.
  • The UN Committee has also sent letters home to inform parents.

How You Can Participate: We encourage families to get involved—whether through cultural dress, food, music, or storytelling. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our children and the vibrant cultures they bring to our school.

Let’s come together to honor the spirit of unity, diversity, and childhood. We look forward to seeing you there!

Betel-nut on campus

Please be reminded that entering the school grounds with betel-nut in your mouth is strictly prohibited. This is in accordance with our school policy aimed at maintaining a clean, safe, and respectful environment for all. Anyone found entering with betel-nut present in their mouth will be refused entry. We appreciate your cooperation in upholding our community standards.

Hat policy

Students are encouraged to wear their hats at all times when outdoor. Please ensure your child comes with his/her school hat/cap to school every day. Students without hat will not participate in outdoor activities including playtime. Class teachers will reach out to parents of students who are not wearing the correct school hat/cap in school or their child may be without a hat/cap for a number of days. Students who tie their hair are encouraged to tie their hair in a manner where their hair allows the hat/cap to sit nicely on their head.

To help keep everyone safe, please follow these important carpark rules when entering and exiting the school:

  • Drive slowly — the speed limit is 5 km/h at all times
  • Stop behind the cones — do not drive past them
  • Avoid stopping on the crossing line — keep it clear for pedestrians
  • Be considerate — watch out for other drivers and pedestrians
  • If you’ll be parked for a longer time, please use the parking space under the tree

Grade 9 and Grade 11 Excursions

Last week, our Grade 9 and Grade 11 students returned safely from their respective educational trips. We trust they had an enjoyable and enriching experience. The next group of excursions is scheduled for early next year.

While these trips were in progress, normal classes continued for all other grades, including the Grade 10 cohort. We sincerely thank the parents and guardians who supported us by ensuring their children attended school during this period.

Grade 10 Post-Examination Program – Careers Week

The Lae International School Secondary Campus successfully completed its Career Week last week.

This program aimed to:

  • Provide students with valuable career education and guidance to help them make informed decisions about their future study and career pathways.
  • Expose them to a variety of professions and industries, highlighting the skills and qualifications required for different roles.
  • Connect students with professionals, parents, and alumni who shared their career journeys and experiences.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all parents, former students, and local businesses who contributed by sharing their time and insights. Your involvement greatly enhances our students’ learning experience and inspires them as they plan for their futures.

In the remaining weeks of the term, our Grade 10 students will participate in several educational excursions to local industries and organizations. These activities are designed to be both educational and rewarding as they prepare to transition from Lower Secondary to Upper Secondary studies.

Your continued engagement ensures timely communication and strengthens the partnership between home and school.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership throughout this term. Your involvement plays a vital role in your child’s academic progress, personal growth, and overall success.

3.      Virtue of the week –Integrity

At LIS boarding house, we believe that education is more than academics—it's about building character. This week, we shine a spotlight on one of the most foundational virtues: integrity.

Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It’s the courage to be honest, the strength to stand by your values, and the humility to admit when you’re wrong. In a world full of shortcuts and noise, integrity is the compass that keeps us true.

Integrity in Our Community

  • In the Classroom: Students are encouraged to uphold academic honesty, take responsibility for their learning, and support their peers with fairness and respect.
  • In the Dorms: Living together teaches us that trust is earned through consistent actions—keeping promises, respecting boundaries, and owning up to mistakes

Voices from the Hallways “Integrity means being the same person in the dark as you are in the light.” — Year 9 Student “When students act with integrity, my job becomes easier and I become confident about the future.”— Boarding parent A Challenge for the Month We invited the student to take the Integrity Pledge: “I will be honest in my words and actions. I will do what is right, even when it’s hard. I will be someone others can trust.” Let’s make integrity not just a word we talk about—but a way we live.

With warmth and gratitude,

The Boarding House Team
