From the Principal

A heartfelt thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers and significant others who joined us at the Mother's Day Breakfast this morning. It is always an exciting event on our school calendar and a wonderful display of love and community. Thank you as always to Miss Pip for her hard work in organising this event. Thank you also to our P&C for hosting a lovely Mother's Day stall. I'd like to wish all our Telopea mums a very happy Mother's Day for Sunday.

Professional Learning

During our School Development Days at the start of the term, our teachers and SLSOs engaged in focused learning on disability and neurodiversity, dedicated to strengthening inclusive education. Teachers developed their understanding in supporting neurodivergent learners and investigated practical strategies for supporting every student to engage effectively in the classroom. Inclusion and high expectations for all students in academic achievement, attendance, behaviour and wellbeing remain a priority for our school.

NSW Public Schools Survey

Parents, guardians and caregivers are invited to take 10 to 15 minutes to participate in the NSW Public Schools Parent Survey. The survey will help us understand your perspectives on your child’s school experience and will be used to make practical improvements to our school. The survey is open until Thursday 28th May.

Play, Eat, Learn

This term we have begun a trial of our new school timetable where students play first, then eat, before being ready for learning. We have also flipped the day with the longer lunch break first and recess in the afternoon. So far, teachers and students have responded positively to the change, with less rubbish in the playground, better behaviour and more focused learning. Parents and carers are welcome to provide feedback on this new approach by emailing or phoning the school office.

Enrolments

Now is the time to enrol your child for Kindergarten in 2027. If your child is due to start school next year, please visit our office or website to complete an enrolment form. Enrolments are open throughout the year for student in grades K to 6. I am always happy to meet with prospective families for a chat and a school tour. Please tell your neighbours and friends.

Student Learning

Congratulations to these students who visited the principal's office this month to celebrate the achievement of a learning goal.

Staff News

Congratulations to Miss Strada who officially graduated university this week with a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Psychology from Macquarie University. We are so proud of her and very lucky to have her as part of our teaching team. She is to be commended on the incredibly strong start she has had into her teaching career and on the outstanding job she is doing teaching the Year 3 Wombats. We know she loved the special walk of honour at morning assembly on Tuesday this week!

Behaviour Expectations

Easter Hat Parade

What a lovely Easter Hat Parade we had on the last day of Term 2. Well done K-2 students and thank you Mrs Moutzouris & Mrs White for organising this event as well as to the parents & carers who joined us on the day.

Creatures and Country Incursion

On the last day of Term 1, Stage 2 and 3 students enjoyed an exciting Country and Creatures incursion from Raptor Reptiles. Christian, our enthusiastic presenter, shared fascinating animals including a blue tongue lizard, turtle, goanna, and python. Students had the unique opportunity to safely touch the reptiles and learn firsthand about their significance to Aboriginal culture. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into both our native wildlife and Indigenous heritage, making it a memorable way to finish the term!

National Walk Safely to School Day

Telopea Public School is taking part in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 22 May 2026, also supporting National Road Safety Week. Walk Safely to School Day also encourages positive environmental action, better use of public transport with reduced car dependency and encourages parents and carers to walk more, reducing dangerous traffic congestion around schools. Being active every day, including walking to school, can help make a difference for many Australians. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or carer - everyone has a role to play in helping children to lead active healthy lives. 7 Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids, so start planning your Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 22 May 2026!

Cross Country

The sun was shining on Tuesday for our annual cross-country carnival. Students from 8 to 13 years had the opportunity to compete in this endurance running event. All student tried their best, with some very impressive displays of sportsmanship. Congratulations to these students who have qualified for the Zone Carnival on the 20th May. We know you will represent our school proudly.

Week 10 - Kindergarten Koalas

Week 1 - Year 4 Kookaburras

Week 2 - Year 3 Wombats

School Uniform

During Weeks 1 to 4 of Term 2 either summer or winter uniform is acceptable to be worn to school. Please use common sense depending on the weather conditions. The official changeover date for winter uniform will be Monday 18th May. All students are expected to be in full winter uniform from this date.

At Telopea Public School, we have high expectations for presentation in readiness for learning. All students should be in full school uniform every day, including the school hat.

New winter jacket

The school now has an optional winter jacket available for purchase. The jacket can be worn over the winter uniform, to provide another layer of warmth and protection in the cooler months. Jackets cost $62.00 each and are available for purchase on Wednesday mornings at the uniform shop or via the School Bytes Parent Portal.

What's Happening - Year 2 Possums

This week, the Year 2 Possums have poured their hearts into crafting gifts for the mothers and cherished figures in their lives. Amidst a flurry of paint, paper, and laughter emerged, little masterpieces, each one carrying a story of love. We hope they bring a smile to your face and wish you all a beautiful and heartfelt Mother’s Day.

Library News

This month our school will be participating in National Simultaneous Storytime 2026. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 26th year, it is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.

The book this year is Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, written by football veterans Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd. Luna Roo captures all the intense excitement of the game, with a heartwarming message that courage and determination are a winning combination. I’m sure our students will enjoy this fun story, especially knowing that many others across the country are reading it at the same time.

Please continue to support your child to borrow and return library books each week! We have a great selection! If you could make sure they have a library bag to keep our books in good condition, that would also be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Mrs Ramsey

Schools as a Community Centre

Hi TPS and SaCC communities,

The SaCC Project has been busy with a focus on healthy eating and cooking in recent weeks.

The OzHarvest NEST (Nutrition Educations and Skills Training) commenced.Participants of the five week program will enjoy group cooking lessons, fun nutrition activities and sharing a meal together. Every week we'll be cooking a savoury and sweet meals...this week we made two versions of Mexican beef and beans to eat with corn chips and tortilla and overnight oats. YUM YUM YUM. We will happily share our recipes...simply reach out to Pip once reading this newsletter and I can forward recipes electronically by text message or email and I can print hardcopies. Thank you to participants of the group who shared stories from home after session 1 via our WhatsApp group chat.

Additionally the Friday Playgroup parents and children have been cooking. That's right....even our youngest TPS community members cook together.

On Friday 1st May we harvested spinach and herbs from the SaCC Garden. Together we washed cut and prepared the ingredients to make Spanakopita (spinach pie). Parents were excited to see their children eating something new which is often the case when sharing a meal in a group setting.

And finally our annual Mother's Day Breakfast.

It was a joy watching so many families come together again this year to celebrate our mothers, mother figures and extended family members. Thank you for taking the time to make the TPS community so tight knit.

If you would like to join any SaCC initiatives please contact me. PLEASE!

I am always happy to accommodate where possible.

I am at school five days.......either in the SaCC rooms (next to the Year 2 Possums classroom), in the canteen Monday and Thursday coordinating Breakfast Club or somewhere onsite.I am everywhere!!!.....Simply ask a staff member ...."where's Pip?".

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

If a student has lost their School Opal card, they will need to apply for a replacement cardNote: a new card will not be issued if an existing School Opal card is updated online – you must submit a replacement application if a School Opal card is lost.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers.
