Message from the Principal

Dear Parents & Carers,

As we embrace new digital tools for effective communication, please be sure to download the Audiri app on your mobile devices. This tool is essential for staying updated on school events, important announcements, and your child’s class throughout the year.

Our school continues to offer a wide range of extracurricular and sporting activities that cater to varied interests and abilities. Please feel free to come along and support our weekend Rugby League and Netball teams on Saturday, which include an exciting opportunity to support our talented teachers’ netball team.

These activities are not only good for physical fitness but also build teamwork and strong community bonds – please see Ms Ignas or Mr Manual if you would like more info.

On the infrastructure front, our current CAPEX works will be drawing to a close soon. When you visit our campuses, you will notice an improved environment that reflects our commitment to providing aesthetically pleasing learning spaces for our students.

Recently we have conducted a comprehensive review of our reporting format from Prep to Year 12. Inspired by best practices from other IEA and international schools, you can look forward to a new, clear, and comprehensive format at the end of this semester, ensuring that our parents receive valuable information on their child’s progress at LIS.

Lastly, our Deputy Principal, along with the two Heads of Campus, represented LIS at the IEA Deputy Principals' meeting in Port Moresby earlier this week. Their active participation in the discussions on IEA curriculum review underscores our commitment to continuously enhance the quality and relevance of our curriculum.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to our school community. Together, we are creating an environment where every child can thrive, and where every parent's voice is important in our school’s progress.

Warm regards

Mr Greg Neville

Principal

Deputy Principal's Notices

Deputy Principal and Head of Campus Meeting at IEA Head Office

Ms Ignas, Mr Winas, and I were invited to a meeting in Port Moresby to collaborate with the other Heads of Campus and Deputy Principals in the IEA system. Over the course of two days we had the opportunity to share best practice in teaching and learning and professional development models. We were able to consult on the IEA curriculum review and offer our suggestions for development to ensure the curriculum is rigorous, current, and meaningful for our students as they progress from Early Years all the way to Year 12. As the only school that has transitions between all the year phases through ELC to Year 12 in the IEA system, we were able to offer insight into the readiness of students as they move from the IEA curriculum into Year 7 through to 12. Additionally, we had the opportunity to strengthen our links with the other IEA schools with ongoing discussions relating to online teacher collaboration across primary and secondary.

Track and Field Spirit Carnival

From Week 6 in PE lessons all students Prep to Grade 10 will be covering track and field sports to support them in this year’s Spirit carnival. Grade 11 and 12 will be participating and have the opportunity for afterschool and lunchtime training. We expect all Day and Boarding students to be present for these days in Week 9.

Drone Lunchtime ECA Opportunities

In the secondary school we have started a sign out system for the school drones at lunchtimes. Students can come and sign out one of our 5 drones for use in lunchtime and then sign it back in at the end of the lunch period. So far students have enjoyed having this opportunity and we welcome all to gain experience in flying the drones.

STEM Fair:

This term we have launched our whole school STEM fair. The theme for all projects must align to the them for World Environment Day 2025, ‘Putting an end to plastic’. Groups can have a maximum of 4 students and the projects can be either practical or research based. The primary and secondary will have separate heats in week 7 and then the top 4 projects from each heat will compete against each other in the final during week 9.

School Arrival Times:

As a reminder to all parents and guardians, supervision of students on the primary campus begins at 7.30am with students able to enter classes from 7.45am. We advise all parents to ensure they do not drop their children off earlier than 7.30am. If students arrive between 7.30am and 7.45am they will be supervised in the hall and need to remain in there seated quietly until they can enter classroom.

Head of Secondary Campus Notices

Dear all

Welcome to another edition of the secondary news this week. Reminders and Updates for as follows:

Hard Work and Dedication

Students have been fully engaged with their assessment tasks, making the most of their break times to study and refine their work. The library has become a hub of academic activity after it has been temporary closed for minor renovations, filled with determined learners pushing themselves to excel. Their commitment is truly commendable, reflecting a strong drive toward academic success.

STEM Fair

Preparations for the STEM Fair are in full swing, with students exploring innovative ideas and fine-tuning their projects. The anticipation is palpable, as they get ready to show case their creativity and problem-solving skills. This event promises to be an inspiring display of talent and ingenuity, bringing together future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Term 2 Assemblies

The start of Term 2 signals the return of student assemblies, with Grade 9KI proudly leading the first gathering. Parents are warmly invited to attend and witness their children take the stage, presenting their work and demonstrating leadership in front of their peers. Assemblies like this foster confidence, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.

Sports Teams Training

Afternoon training sessions have been intense, with the U17 netball girls and rugby boys showing exceptional dedication to their sport. Their commitment is evident in the effort they put into every drill and practice match. The discipline they are cultivating will undoubtedly serve them well as they prepare for upcoming competitions.

Leading by Example

Our teachers have been working tirelessly to teach, guide, and prepare assessments; ensuring students are well supported in their learning journey. Their dedication to excellence continues to inspire and shape young minds and building a culture of academic success.

Our School Expectations

At LIS, we remain steadfast in upholding the standards that foster a respectful, safe, and focused learning environment. As we move forward, we would like to remind all students and families that our core expectations continue to be a priority for every member of our school community.

These expectations include:

1.      Punctuality

Students are expected to arrive at school on time every day. Being early not only sets a positive tone for the day but also ensures that learning begins promptly and without disruption. Punctuality reflects respect for teachers, classmates, and the learning process.

2.      Correct School Uniform

Wearing the proper school uniform is a sign of school pride and unity. Students must ensure that their uniforms are worn neatly and correctly, as outlined in our uniform policy. This includes appropriate footwear and any specific requirements for sports or other activities.

3.      Personal Grooming

Students should maintain a clean and tidy appearance, including appropriate hairstyles, minimal jewellery, and overall good hygiene. Good grooming supports self-respect and helps to maintain a positive school image.

4.      Respect for School Spaces

Certain areas, such as designated no-go zones—including parts of the playground, walkways, and other restricted spaces—must be respected at all times. These rules are in place to ensure student safety and the smooth flow of movement across the campus.

5.      Prohibited Substances and Items

The possession, use, or distribution of banned substances—including cigarettes, e-cigarettes or vapes, alcohol, and any form of illegal drugs—is strictly forbidden on any IEA premises. and during any school-related activities. Likewise, offensive or dangerous items, including any type of weapon or item intended to cause harm or intimidation, are not permitted under any circumstances. Breaches of this expectation will be treated with the utmost seriousness and may lead to disciplinary action.

A BAN order on e-cigarettes has been issued under the Tobacco Control Act 2016, as announced in the National newspaper on Tuesday, May 19, 2025, along with an official Gazettal notice. This legislation makes the possession and distribution of e-cigarettes illegal. Offenders may face fines of up to K100 000 for companies and K10 000 for individuals. Students and families are strongly urged to take this law seriously to avoid legal consequences.

6.      Positive Behaviour and Responsibility

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and responsible manner at all times. This includes being mindful of others, following staff instructions, and contributing to a calm and orderly school environment.

We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these expectations at home. Together, we can ensure that our school remains a place where every student feels safe, respected, and ready to learn.

Thank you

Head of Boarding

Our boarding students had a great time exploring the world of robotics and coding through fun, hands-on activities.

They started with DIY robotics kits, building their own motor-driven robots. Students used simple tools to put together moving machines, learning how motors and gears work as they built.

Students also got to try keypad coding robots. These small robots were programmed using built-in keypads. The challenge was to enter the right sequence of commands to move the robot through a path or maze. It was fun to test, fix, and try again until they got it just right.

“This was a really fun way to learn,” said one student. “We got to build, play, and think all at the same time.”
