Binalong Bulletin

Term 3, Week 10 2025

From the Principal

I honestly can't believe that we are approaching the end of Term 3. I feel like this might possibly be the quickest term yet! We have had many wonderful activities and events with a highlight being our annual Arabin Cup. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were joined by 14 other small schools from around the region. Congratulations to Monteagle 1 who took the win home on the day. A BIG thank you to the Binalong Community Club, Binalong P&C, Bowning Districts Lions Club, our local high school helpers from Murrumburrah, Boorowa and Yass high schools, the Arabin family for continuing to sponsor and support the day, and to our attending students, staff and community. I'd like to make a very special thank you to all Binalong School staff for their coordination of the day. Events like this take a lot of work and planning behind the scenes, and we are very grateful for your hard work. We were impressed with the sportsmanship, encouragement and inclusivity shown by all students throughout the day.

K-2 Excursion: A Roaring Success!

On Friday 29th August, our K-2 students arrived at school bright and early, full of excitement and ready for a fantastic day out! It was wonderful to share such a memorable experience together, and we couldn’t be prouder of how beautifully each child represented our school. We received numerous compliments on their excellent behaviour and attentiveness – well done to all!

Our adventure began at the Dinosaur Museum, where students dived into the fascinating world of prehistoric times. They had the unique opportunity to handle real fossils and even create their own clay fossil imprints, sparking curiosity and creativity. After exploring the museum, we headed to Questacon for a couple of hours of hands-on science fun. The interactive exhibits captivated our young learners, and a few brave souls even took on the thrilling free-fall slide!

A huge thank you to Miss Gerathy for organising such a wonderful day, and to Ali Spencer for safely driving us to and from Canberra and joining in the excitement.

Here’s what some of our K-2 students had to say about their day:

George - "I enjoyed learning at the Dinosaur Museum. I learnt that the T-Rex actually wasn't anywhere near as big as what people think!"

Evie - "I felt really happy and a little bit scared when I went down the free-fall slide at Questacon".

Willow - "I had fun playing all the games at Questacon. The earthquake house was awesome!"

Harry - "We learnt about fossils. I liked making my own fossil".

Charlotte - "The most memorable part at the Dinosaur Museum was when the Sabre-Tooth Tiger roared when we walked past. At Questacon I loved the fire show. A girl even put fire on her hand without wearing gloves"!

Josh - "My favourite part was going to Questacon. I liked learning about Science"!

Chloe - "Questacon was great because we got to see the Fire Show. We learnt all the things a fire needs to go. A girl set her hand on fire but she did it in a safe way. But we would never try it at home"!

Atticus - "I liked seeing the kids go down the slide. They were brave"!

Oliver - "The Dinosaur Museum was my favourite because I liked the growling tiger. I also liked the buttons I could press that made the dinosaur sounds".

So far this Term in 3-6...

Students in Years 3-6 have been learning all about Australia's bushranging past, and delving into fact vs opinion to explore historical information about our infamous bushrangers. They have been studying the text Ned Kelly and the Green Sash in their English unit, and further complementing this in HSIE where they are creating a research project about a chosen bushranger. They are working on persuasive texts about whether Ned Kelly was a hero or a villain and they share some convincing arguments.

They have also been preparing writing pieces for the upcoming Lambing Flat writing competition and we have been blown away by the maturity in their writing.

Creative Arts: Drama with Chonnie

During Term 3 students across the school have had the opportunity to participate in drama activities exploring monologues, movement, improvisation and script interpretation with Chonnie from All Stages Performance Yass.

It has been inspiring to watch students freely create and explore, and we appreciate Chonnie's energy and skill in guiding students through our sessions.

UC Aspire - Friday 22 August

Friday 22 August we were treated to another session with the UC Aspire team exploring adaptive animal features/genetics and ways to harness energy and the careers associated with these elements of science.

In the morning students enjoyed creating movable birds highlighting attributes of their creature and what kind of environment they are adapted to live in. During the middle session, design challenges were undertaken with K-2 exploring dam building in the sandpit and testing their design,  while 3-6 undertook a turbine design challenge with limited materials.

The afternoon was an exciting opportunity to explore circuits and power boards before rounding out the day with a creative challenge at Bush School designing creatures based on unique features and sharing with the group.

National Child Protection Week September 7-13

Every conversation matters—but words alone are not enough.

This year’s National Child Protection Week theme, ‘Every conversation matters: Shifting Conversation to Action,’ reminds us that while dialogue is essential when it comes to raising awareness, challenging harmful norms, and sparking new ideas, real change is only possible when we turn those conversations into meaningful action.

NAPCAN is committed to moving beyond talk, focusing on concrete steps that prevent harm to children. Through strengthening prevention and advocacy initiatives, we’re empowering communities to actively protect every child, ensuring they not only feel heard but truly experience safety, care, and protection.
