Principal's Message

Dear Community

What a wonderful week we have had with all of our Book Week activities. Thanks to Mrs Daniels for coordinating such a broad range of amazing activities! We have had everything from library excursions to QR code quizzes and of course our annual book character parade. Thanks must also go to our wonderful parent community who outdid themselves this year in the creativity stakes. It was so lovely to see the effort that had gone into making some truly inspired costumes out of household items!

As it is Book Week, I thought I would take the opportunity to talk a little about the various aspects of learning to read. When a child can read the words in a library book or home reader, it does not necessarily mean they are ready for a harder text. The paragraph below sums up nicely what it means to be a fluent reader – which is our aim for our students.

Word recognition on its own doesn't create fluent readers. If kids don't know what the words themselves mean, they're not really reading. Furthermore, understanding the meaning of words on their own isn't really useful. Fluent readers understand the text they're reading as a whole, drawing meaningful conclusions and finding important takeaways.

If you would like to know more about the various aspects of reading, please click on the link below.

New House Names

Well, the votes are in and counted and our house names will be based around Sea Creatures!

  • Blue will be Maamoong (whale)
  • Red will be Kwila (shark)
  • Yellow will be Karil (crab)

It was a very tight vote. Students were informed over the PA on Monday and an Audiri post was sent to notify the community on Tuesday. Some branding activities will now be developed to support the students in developing unique identities for each House. We will be using the new names from this week to get used to them before the carnival.

Athletics Carnival

Thankfully, the weather is looking delightful next week, so we expect our Athletics Carnival to go ahead as planned next Friday, 1 September at Deanmore Reserve. Below is an outline of the day, and for more detailed information a full program will be sent out on Audiri on Monday.

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the families who have ordered a pizza herb pot for Father’s Day for their support. Due to the kind donations from Bunnings, we were able to raise around $1,300 towards projects at Scarborough PS! They will be delivered to your child’s classroom on Tuesday (Kindy Group 1) and Thursday next week for the rest of the school.

Our next General Meeting will be held Tuesday 29 August at 6:30 pm in the school library. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening, make suggestions, and get an update on the progress of the new build! All welcome, we would love to see you there! If you’re unable to make it, email us with your suggestions or questions to be added to the agenda.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesday mornings 8:45 am to 9:15 am in Room 8. We are well stocked, with an excess of hats if you need a spare! We are planning to hold another second hand sale towards the end of the term. If you have any unwanted items, please donate them to the uniform shop on Wednesday mornings, or to the office during school hours.

Order forms can be downloaded from the school website https://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/p-c/uniforms/

Emailed orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom or left at the office for collection. Please indicate on the form.

CANTEEN

We have been able to set up a canteen volunteer group so Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, has a few parents that are trained up and can help once or twice a term. There is always space for more volunteers, so if you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator).

The time needed to volunteer is Friday mornings between 11:00 am -12:30 pm.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C! Please note that we have previously given the wrong scheme ID, so double check next time you’re donating that it is the one above.

THESE BINS ARE NOT FOR RUBBISH BUT FOR ELIGIBLE EMPTY DRINK CONTAINERS ONLY, THANK YOU!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
