Term 2 Week 8 Newsletter - Friday 21 June 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Athletics Carnival

Our Athletics Carnival was held under beautiful sunny skies on Wednesday and was a resounding success. The day was filled with a variety of exciting activities that engaged all our students, fostering both fun and healthy competition. A huge thank you to Ms Kathy Xenos and her team of dedicated Stage 2 teachers whose meticulous planning and organisation made the event seamless and enjoyable for everyone involved. We are also very thankful for the incredible support from our parent volunteers, who helped ensure everything ran smoothly, and also for those of you who were able to make it down to spectate. Your presence and support showcased the vibrant spirit of our school community.

Stage 3 Camps

Next week, our Stage 3 students will be embarking on camp to Bathurst (Year 5) and Canberra (Year 6). These trips are a rite of passage for our students (I’m sure those of you educated in NSW will remember your own primary school trips to Canberra and/or the gold fields) and give them the opportunity to explore significant historical and cultural landmarks, enhancing their learning beyond the classroom. With this in mind, I would like to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifice of our wonderful Stage 3 teachers, support and executive staff who will be accompanying the students, ensuring their safety and well-being 24/7 for the duration of the trip. Their commitment to providing such valuable experiences is truly commendable. We are confident that this camp will be an unforgettable and highly-educational experience for all the students involved.

Parent-Teacher Interview Booking

I am pleased to report that over 250 of you have already taken advantage of the opportunity to book in a time to meet with your chid/ren’s teacher/s in Week 10 for our Term  2 parent-teacher interviews. I am confident that these interviews will provide you with additional information that will help to contextualise your child's Semester 1 report and I encourage you to book in a time to meet if you haven’t already.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the P&C Trivia Night tonight. Our staff will be well represented by a team of 10 teachers at the teachers’ table - game on!

Regards,

John Nguyen

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu, COVID 19 or Microplasma etc are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

Kindergarten visit to Calmsley Hill Farm

The weather was kind to Kindergarten last Friday as we embarked on our first excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm!

Students met some lovely farm animals and even milked Daisy the Cow. We were treated to an exciting tractor ride and finished the day with a sheep dog show and some whip cracking.

Student quotes:

  • Ethan from KB said, "I loved the tractor ride because it was bumpy and I got to see the bees."
  • Finn M from KW said, "I liked seeing the snake because it was camouflaged a lot."
  • James from KW liked milking the cow because it was "squishy and warm".
  • Betty from KB said "I liked it when we went on the bus because I got to sit on the window side."

Primary Athletics Carnival Report

We had a successful day at our school athletics carnival on 19th June. Students competed enthusiastically in track and field events and represented their houses with pride! It was fantastic to see students being active and enjoying the day.

Thank you to all staff and parents who assisted throughout the organisation of the carnival. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Please see the document below with the results from the primary track and field events. We will present the ribbons for track events only at the 3-6 assembly in Week 1 Term 3. The field events will be presented later in the term.

The Long Jump and 1500m events will be held on Wednesday 31 July at King George Park, Rozelle. The results, champion house and our representatives in the zone athletics team will be published after these events.

Please note:
  • Inner West PSSA will ask for a qualifying Junior division ( 8 yrs, 9 yrs and 10yrs combined ) for the 200m track event.

Paul Kelly Cup

On Tuesday 40 brilliant students battled it out face to face with a myriad of different schools and other kids. All of the students got up bright and early on a sunny morning to make the long trek to Timbrell Park. Once we arrived, the tents went up and our bags went down and we were ready to win and play our hearts out.

Drummoyne put forward three teams. The first was a social team who wanted to try something new and have a bit of a laugh. The boys learnt about a new sport and had a lovely day down at the park. The girls team was very much the same - with some experienced players leading the way for the newcomers. They made the semis and gave it a red hot crack, but were beaten by 2 goals in the semi- final. The experienced boys team played well - making it into the grand final with ease. They certainly had tough competition in the grand final and were beaten in the end.

We'd like to thank Todd - Ms Champion's friend - for taking the day off work to help coach for the day. And thank you to the parents who came down to cheer on the teams throughout the day.

Congratulations

This week Juliette B, Maeve O and Ella C represented our school at the PSSA South Eastern Girls Touch Football day held at Kareela Oval.

The girls played six games, winning five comfortably and narrowly losing 2-3 to Cronulla to finish runners up in the tournament.

Juliette and Ella were subsequently picked to represent South East at the upcoming NSWPSSA State Champs in Wollongong in August.

We wish you good luck girls!

On Tuesday Maeve O and Ella C went back to Kareela Oval and played seven 25 minute soccer games. We were selected to play in the Inner West PSSA zone soccer team. We made new friendships, extended our soccer skills and, of course, had fun!

We came top of our pool so we made it into the semi-finals against Engadine and won. We ended up undefeated the whole day and won the grand final!
