PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Ms Colb

Congratulations Students

We are very pleased with the behaviour of our students this term in classrooms, the playground and at special events like the Cross Country Carnival and the ANZAC Day assembly. All students are demonstrating the school's values and showing us how to learn well and play well together.

Early Arrival

In keeping with our school's supervision policy, the school formally accepts students at 8.50am each school day. There is no teacher supervision prior to this time. To support the safety of each child, would you please ensure that students do not arrive at school before 8.50am. GOWRIE NSW is open before school to provide supervision of students.

P&C Mother’s Day Stall

Our Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 12th May. Please remember to purchase tokens for your child to select a gift on the day through School24 as mentioned in the Skoolbag message. Anyone able to volunteer for the morning would be greatly appreciated.

Primary Cross Country Carnival

Today we enjoyed our 3-6 cross country carnival held at Brett Park. Students showed great sportsmanship and tried their best.

K-2 students also participated in their sports afternoon at school. A great day was had by all. Thank you to the staff who organised these events.

Construction Work in South Street

We are pleased to let you know that the construction work to repair the retaining wall along South Street has commenced and will take 8-10 weeks to complete.  The scope of work during this period may mean that the South Street entrance will be accessible for some of this time. When closed please access the school as communicated previously:

For morning drop-offs, parents of kindergarten students are asked to drop their children off at the Thompson Street gate.

For the afternoon pick-up, kindergarten parents are asked to come into the school grounds and wait under the kindergarten COLA near the coloured kindy lunch tables.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

Dr Vicky Sheppeard, NSW Health Director of Communicable Diseases, said while the flu vaccine is still the best protection, simple hand hygiene is also important.

“Basic hygiene can help prevent flu and other infections spreading in the community, so it’s really important to cover your coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands regularly,” Dr Sheppeard said.

Teacher Professional Learning

This week our staff was led by mathematics consultant Anita Chin in an extended after-school session which was a practical and highly engaging workshop tailored to empowering teachers in delivering quality number sense lessons. The session focussed on reviewing prior mathematical learning, connecting concepts, practising mathematical language and reinforcing new learning. The workshop followed previous professional learning where Anita collaborated with the math team to create a maths transformation strategy built around the school's context and student needs. Anita will be returning later this term to deliver demonstration lessons with our students where she will model effective whole class instruction using her 5 part lesson structure which is a scaffolded approach to promote student engagement.

Tell Them From Me - Student Feedback Survey

This term Year 4 - 6 students will be taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

More information about the survey is available at:

education.nsw.gov.au/ttfm

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the below form and return it to school by Friday 12 May 2023.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures in schools

NSW Health advise that COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. People exposed to COVID-19 should follow NSW Health guidanceExternal link and test to identify infection early even if they are not experiencing any symptoms.

  • strongly encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations for students, staff and their families, including a booster shot (when eligible) and maintaining double dose vaccination requirements for staff who work in an SSP

  • good hygiene practices including regular hand washing with soap and warm water and/or use of hand sanitiser

  • maintaining natural ventilation, with consideration of local environmental circumstances

  • boosted cleaning during the day, with particular attention given to high touch surface areas
  • wearing a mask for all staff and visitors when working with or visiting Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs), support units or schools with students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19 particularly indoors and when physical distancing is not possible

  • assessing risk and applying appropriate safeguards across activities and events

COVID reporting

It is important for our community to register their positive RAT result to Service NSW to access NSW Health support including antiviral medicines if they are eligible.

K-2 Parent Reading Workshop

As part of our home and school partnership, this term Drummoyne Public School is inviting parents and carers to join us for a session on how to support reading at home. This workshop will deepen your understanding about what concepts and skills are being taught from the new Curriculum, learning about teaching strategies used and understanding the most effective ways to help your children with reading at home.

To register your interest please respond using the Skoolbytes link emailed to you earlier this week.

GENERAL NEWS

2023 school travel applications are now open

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023, can now apply.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

For further details please see the attachment below.

P&C ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello from Angela, P&C President 2023

It's been almost two months into my role as President of the P&C 2023, and I wanted to say an official hello :) and update you on what the P&C is working together to achieve this year. So far we've been busy with the Election BBQ, Council grants, Second Hand and new Uniform Sales, the upcoming Mother's Day stall, and planning all the fun events for the year.

Last calendar year the P&C and incredible volunteers organised some really successful events which resulted in a net profit of $75,000! This meant that in 2022 the P&C could directly contribute $50,000 towards school projects and resources, including the replacement of every smart screen in the school (a programme the P&C embarked on with the school 3 years ago and we've been able to complete 12 months ahead of schedule).

This year the P&C has set a goal of raising $100,000 with our objective to contribute to items that Principal Brian Dill, teachers and staff have identified as the most impactful on our kids' learning and wellbeing, namely; North playground shade, electronic community noticeboard, new curriculum resources, laptops, robotics and STEM share kits, flagpoles, modern learning furniture and a wall mural.

I encourage as many parents as possible to jump into an event or sub-committee that interests you or that you are great at, because the meetings are fun and social, and the teamwork is really rewarding. As you can see, everything we raise directly benefits our kids' learning and wellbeing at Drummoyne PS.

Keen to get involved? Please email me at
president@drummoynepublicschool.com.au

I hope to see you at one of our P&C meetings (next one is Tuesday 16th May in the library at 7.30pm), because all voices are welcome... and there will be snacks. For parents who can't make it into the school, we plan to have a couple of our future meetings on ZOOM this year.

Thanks, on behalf of the whole P&C Executive.

Angela Farrell. P&C President 2023

May P&C Meeting

Please join us for the May P&C meeting on Tuesday 16 May from 7.30pm in the school library.

Reminder - please return your P&C Volunteer Form ASAP

Each year our parent community plays a vital role in supporting Drummoyne Public School.  We are very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community! The richness of school life that the children enjoy is due to the ongoing support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school.

One important avenue of support is through P&C organised activities, providing funds each year for various projects.

The purpose of this post is to ask all families to support the organisation of one P&C activity this year.  Our hope is that all families will ‘play a part’ in enriching the lives and learning of our children through volunteering for just one activity.

Would you please indicate on the form attached below one P&C activity or role that you would be willing to be involved in this year and hand to your child’s class teacher at a parent teacher interview or to the school office and record your willingness to support the school and P&C.

This information will be collated and a member of the P&C will be in touch in due course.

We hope that 2023 is a wonderful year for you and your family.
