Principal's Report

Wednesday 26th July 2023

Hello Everyone,

This week we received our NAPLAN results as compared to Similar Schools (these are schools from all over the State that have a similar socio-economic profile and size e.g. Northcote Primary School). The comparison against similar schools is a really good measure of our student's  achievement. We are also compared to other local schools (these are called Network Schools).

Today I am including our 2023 NAPLAN results for our 22 Grade 3 students. I cannot include the Grade 5 results as it is a cohort of only 8 students and so they can be more easily identified through the data.

I can share with you all that 100% of our Grade 5 students were in the top two areas of “Strong” or “Exceeding” in Writing. That is extraordinary, given that the average for other local schools was 76% of students in the top two areas (this is also a good result)!

Grade 3 results for students who are “Strong” or “Exceeding” (the top two areas) are: -

I am really pleased with both the Grade 3 AND Grade 5 results.

There are a couple of things to remember. This suite of tests was done very early in the year in March, and it was the first time that our students did NAPLAN online (the only written test was Grade 3 Writing). As you can see all children in the State had lower % scores for Spelling and G&P. These are areas that we have been focussing on this year and we are looking to see improved results for our children next year.

These results are an indication of your child on one day only, but they do give us an idea as to how the school is travelling collectively.

All of our results are very strong, and I couldn’t be more proud of the students. This is a lovely reflection of the work of our students and also everyone working together as a team (teachers, parents, community) to achieve the best for the children, even though they have been through some difficult years.

This week I put in a funding application to improve our playground area. I have asked to further expand and update our playground with inclusive equipment, and to add a sensory playground area behind the STEAM room. These applications are very time consuming to do and often we miss out because our children here are seen as advantaged, but I have given it a try. Fingers crossed! I will let you know the outcome.

Congratulations this week go to Tom Hurst who has been playing FUTSAL for a couple of years, and on Friday night he kicked his first goal. These are memorable moments in a child’s (and often a parent’s) life. Well done, Tom!

Please let me know if you have anything happening in your child/children's lives you would like to celebrate.

Have a lovely week.

Trish

From the Office

Hello everyone,

Smile Squad update:

For those students who were unable to be seen whilst the Smile Squad attended our school late term 2, there will be a letter from the Smile Squad sent out to parents detailing the next steps. Please look out for this in the coming weeks.

Just a quick reminder this week that Absences are to be reported via the school phone absence line, or through the school office.

Our annual school production will be held in term 3. Audition scripts have been given to our grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 students. The production is usually performed at the end of the term, so if you are away on holidays at that time, or a large portion of the term, please let us know so that we can work the students roles around this. We will be sending more information home about production soon, and please watch this space for production news throughout the term.

Thank you

Our Well-being and Inclusion Coordinator Olivia  is available at MMPS on Monday's and Tuesday's.

Exploring online safety together

Navigating the online world can be both exciting and challenging for our kids. At school we explicitly teach our students how to navigate this world safely and from a place of knowledge. The resource, Google Interland is like a reliable guide, offering interactive games and activities designed to teach essential lessons on online safety and responsible digital citizenship.

Through these engaging adventures, our young learners will develop a deeper understanding of online risks like cyberbullying and phishing. They will acquire the skills needed to navigate the internet securely, making informed decisions every step of the way.

We are encouraging our families and carers, to join this educational journey with your children at home. By doing so, you'll reinforce the valuable knowledge they acquire in our school, strengthening your family's digital awareness together.

In our pursuit of digital empowerment, let's also remember to supervise the content our children access on YouTube. Here are some great videos to watch with your children to help them explore YouTube confidently.

For an addition to your digital explorations, I'd like to introduce you to TKSST (The Kid Should See This), a captivating website with educational and entertaining videos, offering a great alternative to YouTube.

If you have any questions about any of these resources or need assistance, please feel free to reach out.

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hello everyone,

This week will be very busy and jam packed.

On Wednesday students in the grades 4, 5 and 6 classes are going to Sunbury to play basketball in the Interschool Basketball competition. They will be going up against other schools from our area.

Good luck Team! It is always a fun day being active and practising our skills up against students from other schools.

Last week the grade 5/6 students were given their production roles. We all had to audition in front of the grade 4, 5 and 6s. We were given part of the script and had to memorise lines and perform them in front of an audience. It was super nerve racking but an important part of the Production preparation. The other classes will be completing their own auditions and their roles will be chosen soon. We are already doing singing practice and we are working on our dances.

Have a good week everyone,

Harriet

International Baccalaureate term 3 update

This Term begins with all classes working through the ‘How We Express Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry. From Foundation students exploring how we can express ourselves through the arts through to Grade 5 and 6s looking at how the media is a powerful tool, each class is deeply engaging in how our lives are impacted by artistic expression. Grade 2/3 are looking at how indigenous cultures around the world express their beliefs and culture through the arts and have begun their unit by exploring Indigenous Australian artforms. The Grade 5/6 classroom is critically analysing how companies and people use the media to express their beliefs and try to persuade people of a particular point of view. The beauty of the PYP allows not only each class to explore a different aspect of expression but also each individual student has the chance to explore their own lines of Inquiry, based on their own interests. It will be wonderful to see in which direction each class and each individual student go within their Units of Inquiry.

Foundation / Grade 1 Reading Activities

This week, the Foundation/ Grade 1 students have been working on their reading skills learning letters, sounds and words. They were also working on their writing skills. As part of student agency, the students get to choose the pathway to take with their writing practice. This week, some children were choosing to tell stories with illustrations, some chose to write in their exercise books, and others were wishing to use their notebooks for publishing and printing. Below are some photos of the students fine tuning their reading and writing.

STEM News

This week in STEM the classes all explored gravity. They used the concept of balance to observe how the Earth is constantly pulling objects towards it. Students looked at the art of Rocky Byun, a Korean artist who creates sculptures out of balancing objects on top of one another. They then went outside and had a go at trying to defy gravity by building our own balancing sculptures. Have a look below at how the students went, it looks like it was a whole lot of fun!

What's been happening in Art?

In Art this week, the students are all starting to make some props for the upcoming school production. They were all having a lot of fun being very messy creating the paper mache base for their Bird props which they will be working on for the next few weeks. Below are some photos of the initial stages, and we look forward to seeing the finished product with their bright colours and feathers!

Young Voices of Macedon

Young Voices of Macedon is currently preparing for their annual concert in September. Our older singers (9+) are also commencing work on Sea dreaming by Elena Kats-Chernin, a substantial work that was first performed by a massed choir of children at the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. In 2 performances in Bendigo on 25th and 26th November our choir will join with the Bendigo Youth Choir and choirs from Girton College, along with the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra in what promises to be an exciting and memorable experience.
