Hello Everyone,
This week we received our NAPLAN results as compared to Similar Schools (these are schools from all over the State that have a similar socio-economic profile and size e.g. Northcote Primary School). The comparison against similar schools is a really good measure of our student's achievement. We are also compared to other local schools (these are called Network Schools).
Today I am including our 2023 NAPLAN results for our 22 Grade 3 students. I cannot include the Grade 5 results as it is a cohort of only 8 students and so they can be more easily identified through the data.
I can share with you all that 100% of our Grade 5 students were in the top two areas of “Strong” or “Exceeding” in Writing. That is extraordinary, given that the average for other local schools was 76% of students in the top two areas (this is also a good result)!
Grade 3 results for students who are “Strong” or “Exceeding” (the top two areas) are: -
| MOUNT MACEDON | SIMILAR SCHOOLS | NETWORK SCHOOLS |
READING | 100% | 81% | 76% |
WRITING | 91% | 89% | 84% |
SPELLING | 68% | 67% | 61% |
GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION | 64% | 65% | 59% |
NUMERACY | 86% | 80% | 77% |
I am really pleased with both the Grade 3 AND Grade 5 results.
There are a couple of things to remember. This suite of tests was done very early in the year in March, and it was the first time that our students did NAPLAN online (the only written test was Grade 3 Writing). As you can see all children in the State had lower % scores for Spelling and G&P. These are areas that we have been focussing on this year and we are looking to see improved results for our children next year.
These results are an indication of your child on one day only, but they do give us an idea as to how the school is travelling collectively.
All of our results are very strong, and I couldn’t be more proud of the students. This is a lovely reflection of the work of our students and also everyone working together as a team (teachers, parents, community) to achieve the best for the children, even though they have been through some difficult years.
This week I put in a funding application to improve our playground area. I have asked to further expand and update our playground with inclusive equipment, and to add a sensory playground area behind the STEAM room. These applications are very time consuming to do and often we miss out because our children here are seen as advantaged, but I have given it a try. Fingers crossed! I will let you know the outcome.
Congratulations this week go to Tom Hurst who has been playing FUTSAL for a couple of years, and on Friday night he kicked his first goal. These are memorable moments in a child’s (and often a parent’s) life. Well done, Tom!
Please let me know if you have anything happening in your child/children's lives you would like to celebrate.
Have a lovely week.
